“A family with no hospitality experience runs the place”
Reviewed February 18, 2011

We went to this place for more than 10 years, under a few ownerships. Most of them kept the place as a family place: breakfast served, kitchen with utensils, and a friendly service. Today is none of this.
No breakfast at $230 per night, most of kitchen utensils are minimum, and you have to leave the room before 10 or they do don clean the place!!!!!!!

The second time we try to go there was even better: they mess up our reservation.
So please save your money!

As a surprise gift for my husband and 2 children, I arranged to stay at "Karen's Cabin" managed by Goldmine Lodge in Big Bear, CA for 3 nights during the Christmas holiday, 2010. We were very disappointed with the cabin, especially at $229/night + extra charges for a pet. For instance, we were all set to watch DVDs (the website included a DVD as one of the amenities), and the DVD player did not work. The next morning I called the manager, Jim DeGroot, and asked if he could please fix it. In the late afternoon he arrived and agreed it was broken but that he couldn't fix it or get another until he got the go-ahead from the owner, an 80 year old woman who doesn't like to sink any money into her 1940's era cabin. We also found many broken or poorly working amenities such as a broken heater in the bathroom, poorly working flu in the fireplace, refrigerator that froze everything, broken stoveblight, etc. I asked for a $20 per night refund off the $229/night cost since we were unable to watch DVDs. He said he would ask the owner and get back to us. After 3 weeks I called him and he said she refused to give any refund, but he would be fixing the DVD. If you do go, bring a 2 to 3 prong adaptor for plugging in computers, etc
