We had heard rave reviews of this place and were really hopeful when we went in. Sorry, but our experience did not lie up to 5 stars or #1 rating. Food was average, service difficult because not one waiter had command of english and service was scanty. Maybe we just hit an off day.

Although we are no experts, and rarely eat Indian food, my husband and I decided to give the Himalayan Restaurant a try. We found the food to be unique and quite tasty. We have seen some reviews that this is not authentic Indian food, but we were more concerned about the taste rather than the authenticity. Since we did not encounter a large middle eastern population at Big Bear, one would assume the Indian food would be more Americanized!
We started papadum lentil "chips" which were wafer thin and rather good. A bit salty if one was to put away the entire basket though. Next up, we had chicken mo-mo. These dumplings look like pot stickers and were fresh and slightly chewy. This was a huge appetizer with 5 or 6 dumplings. We then had tandoori. We ordered this since it was familiar. The chicken was tender and the sautéed onions & peppers were bright and crisp cooked. Although we ordered rice with the chicken, our waiter said that naan bread is usually eaten with this dish. Rice still would have been good choice though. I loved the naan bread and in fact ate the leftovers for breakfast!
All the food we ate was freshly prepared, seasoned nicely and tasted good. On our next trip back, maybe we will be a little more adventurous and try some unique menu items!

If you enjoy Indian food, you will love this place. I eat at Indian restaurants about once a week in the Los Angeles area, and this is on a par with the best. We had the garbanzo bean dish and an order of the baby chicken tikka. They were both excellent and there was a lot of chicken. The side rice order is also very generous. Nice atmosphere. It is located in the village, in a very nice area of town. There is a large public parking area in a lot on a side street nearby. They were busy, but the service was adequate and pleasant.

This is the only Indian restaurant in the Big Bear region and unless you're desperate for Indian food, avoid this place at all costs. I have eaten at Indian restaurants all over the country and throughout India and this is not good Indian food (you'll realize how bad it is once you eat at another Indian restaurant with halfway decent Indian food). Food is very bland, not very warm and just tastes bad! Positives were the atomsphere was good, but staff were also very slow and it can get cramped in the dining hall.
