“Stay away”
Reviewed April 15, 2008

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in April, booked direct with the hotel, at a cost of 259$ per night plus tax, you also have to pay to park your car 28$ plus tax a day. The pool is no where near completed, the lifts are a mess, very very dark rooms ours was all black, black corridors, Iknow its boutique hotel but this is a bit much. The only good thing is the location for Beverely Hills.
When we explained to the staff that we were not informed of the pool, they said the website needs updating.

The staff is friendly. The lobby is modern and clean. I walked into the elevator and couldn't believe how dirty it was. The mirrors and carpet was gross. I got off on my floor and thought to myself "What the [--] is this!". Black lacquer walls, mirror ceiling, smelly hallway and a weird picture at the end of the hall of a man riding a quad...hmm? Ok...
My room was for a 25 year old male. This room smelled. Thank god they have a terrace to open the doors for fresh air.
It is very loud. Lots of traffic on Wilshire. At the same time every morning some car would pass by honking his horn with a tune of La Cucaracha.
Am I in Bervely Hills or in East L.A.?
Thank godness for the staff. That was the only thing that was nice about this boutique WHATEVER hotel.
I will send photos later.
The pool isn't even close to being done. It's a mess up there!

this is a true "little gem" of a hotel very close to the luxury of beverly hills but at a very affordable price...they have done a wonderful job making the rooms and halls extremely stylish without losing its functionality...absolutely no complaints except for one which is the TV did not work and when immediately fixed on request the actual reception was a bit of a blizzard...they told me they would comp my parking, but since i didn't have a car no consideration was made for the lack of TV

truly a nice boutique hotel with friendly helpful staff

This was a bad experience from the first minute. First, we were taken to a room where the smell of smoke was overpowering. The bellman said that it was because the hotel used to be a Best Western and so even though it had been repainted, the smell of smoke seeped through the paint.
We switched rooms and went to a similar room but without the smell. After unpacking, and trying to wedge our clothes into a locker which is the size of a high school gym locker, we cut on th tv which did not work. We waited about 30 minutes for the service man to show up and when he did he spent an hour in our room before telling us that it wouldn't work. They wanted us to switch rooms again but by then we had unpacked and had to leave for dinner, so we decided to stay without the tv.
We also noticed that it was a handicap room, which meant that the bathroom had only a hand shower (which meant water was all over the bathroom floor), there was no counter space for bathroom items, and the sink was lower to the ground so that it could be wheelchair accesible.
All in all, it was a Best Western with a fresh coat of paint and a really cool hallway. Of course, since the walls were so thin, it was easy to hear people in their rooms and when morning came, you not only heard the construction work, but also each and every car that drove by. We decided to shorten our stay and so we checked into the 4 Seasons for the next few days, which was ideal.
I understand that the Thompson is supposed to be ultra cool but it is hardly worth the money and is not quite as cool as they would like for you to believe. When I explained to the young lady behind the desk why we were checking out early, her response was something along the lines of "oh wow".
Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to stay.

I had a last-minute trip to LA over the weekend come up and was able to steal this place on Orbitz as part of a package.

General comments:

- the lounge and restaurant are up and running and at 12:30 on a Saturday night, were full of Pretty Young Things in their 20's and dress-shirt wearing dates, so I'm pretty sure the joint will be hopping and one of the "in" places in a few months.

- Service was good; though rooms don't have irons or ironing boards, one got brought up promptly,. The same went for some office supplies I needed for mailing a package. The concierge wasn't as well informed about local dining options as the one at the Beverly Wilshire down the street (the BW had a printout, which would be a good idea for the Thompson to have), but it looks like they hired a lot of 20-somethings for the place and that's the crowd they are going for, so maybe it will take a bit for them to get up to speed.

- Comfortable beds and a good rain-style shower. No tubs (the bathroom wouldn't fit a good-sized tub, anyway). Bath products were good. There was still scaffolding in front of my room. The room carries the usual expensive minibar. The decor is definitely 70's retro-futuristic California- you expect HAL to open the pod bay door for you. (Nice touch- there were reflective bars on the ceiling- nice when you have someone in bed with you).

- While there are nice Dell flat screen TVs... they don't have HDTV broadcast service set up yet. Also, the wireless signal for the free Internet dropped. A lot. Ooops. Maybe these points will get upgraded in the next couple of months.

- I rather liked the lobster tempura at Bond St and their martini selection. Good service there as well.

Overall, I think they are still going through a bit of shakedown as a new hotel. If you can find deals on Orbitz or elsewhere where you can snag this inexpensively (I paid $85 a night or so, for a Sat-Mon stay with taxes), the location's great, and I am going to guess they will be the "in" thing in BH in a few months if they can get the snags out. I rather thought their service was good and efficient, and the details that were a bit lacking could easily be fixed.

  • Liked — hip attitude shown off by retro-modern decor
  • Disliked — hotel is still in shakedown cruise mode

I have read mixed reviews on this site, but my experience
was excellent. First of all the hotel is still under renovation-
They are working on the last 4 suites, The rooftop pool will not be open until february. The restaurant is open only for breakfast
and the elevators are not finished. The entire staff bent over backwards to make our stay pleasant though-offering to give us a lift to Nic's martini lounge a few blocks away on new years eve so
we wouldn't have to cab it. This is a very hip hotel in an excellent location-just a few doors away from the beverly wilshire. The bathrooms are small but completely dialed in with black marble showers, italian bisazza tile flooring and ebony hardwood floors. Flat screen tv's- The room is minimal but comfortable. It was a steal at 169.00. Parking is overpriced at 28.00 a night but then again, it is beverly hills
