A group of us went for brunch. As many of the staff had a french accent and the menu offered appetizers and entrees we all have enjoyed in France, we looked forward to reliving French memories.
The staff could not have been more pleasant; however, when even a croque has become something no self respecting Frenchman would recognize, it's time for a refresher course in La France.

I recently had a terrible experience at Monsieur Marcel. My cousin and I met there for a late lunch at 3 pm. Yet, even though we were one of only three tables being served, we had to keep motioning for and at one point even had to get up to get the waitress to get water and our check. As for the food, the bread was not particularly good and the butter was so iced cold that it couldn't be spread. The tomatoes in the heirloom tomato salad were mealy. I had indicated to the waitress not to serve me the dish if they were, as tomatoes are out of season. But by the time the food came, I was so hungry, I decided to eat it anyway. The onion soup was only fair.

After lunch, I bought a few items including a gnocchi pasta by De Checco. When I cooked it the next night, it had a horrible flavor, almost like citric acid. Neither I nor my dinner guest could eat it. When I went to take it back, even though the receipt said there was a ten day return policy, the cashier at first told me I could only get a store credit and then said she'd have to ask the owner.

The owner, Katie Strouck, came over with an annoyed look on her face. Instead of greeting me, welcoming me to the restaurant and asking me what the problem was, she immediately declared that she couldn't take back food that had been opened. I told her that I had to open it and cook it to know that the product was bad. She then told me that it was the cheapest gnocchi they sold, implying there was something wrong with me for buying it. Then she shrugged her shoulders and told me she couldn't do anything for me. I then told her that was ridiculous, that I take back bad food to stores like Whole Foods, Ralphs and even restaurants with no problem. Her comment was that she was a mom and pop store, which is ludicrous considering the rent for that sized store on Canon Drive is approximately $27,000 a month. When I started to say that I couldn't believe she was taking this position, she irritably told the cashier to give me a refund to my credit card.

I then told the cashier that this woman was insane to be in the service business and argue with a customer over $4.90. I asked her if she realized that she had just lost future business from me as well as my recommending the restaurant to my many friends. To add insult to injury, I then had to wait for ten minutes while she processed the refund which, by the way, never went through to my credit card. With food and service like that, I don't expect the place to last long.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Monsieur Marcel clone itself from the original Farmer's Market (The Grove) and move west to BH. This location is bright and airy and occupying a large space, conveniently located next to the parking garage. The menu is pretty much the same though I think the portions are a bit smaller here. Specifically, the pommes fritte (fries). Gotta pay for that pricey real estate.
The salmon and duck crostinis are perfect little bites and paired with a glass of vin, you have a nice snack. The weekend lunch/brunch times are very busy and the outdoor seating is at a premium. Great for people-watching!
