The tri-tip sandwich is the BEST.... They also have a stand at the corner of I think University and Pedro (I think that his name) the owner is out there with the music and his suave way of enticing you to try the sandwiches. He was out there passing out samples and how can we say no to a warm fun loving guy... after one bite of a tri-tip, we were sold....juicy, tasty..great sandwich to take to memorial stadium on game day! The platters are also great and they do give you lots of food.

It's pretty rare to get good food within a half-block from a university campus; but here's an exception . . . and you usually get a funb experience to go with your meal. This place started in the corner of a parking lot, festooned with Brazilian flags and highlighted by Pedro's passing out samples of try-tip or smoothies, offering his personal suggestions from the menu. It gradually expanded over there years not just in that original location but also in an indoor cafe a few blocks away. But if the weather's good, you owe it to yourself to go for the original experience. Who knows who you might meet? One day my son actually ran into another Pedro waiting in line - the original "Vote For Pedro" actor from "Napoleon Dynamite."

There is a small shack on the corner of University and Walnut in addition to the cafe on Shattuck. The special a tri tip sandwich smothered in a cilantro garlic sauce with a mango smoothie was outstanding. I'm going here next time I'm in town. Brazilian street food at its best!

Seriously, a before the invasion of hyper-priced yuppie food coaches with $10 tacos, this place has been charming students and budget-minded diners just outside the UC gates for years. It's justifiably well-known for the tri-tip, like Pedro's specials, and Pedro himself will fuss over you like you're at a white tablecloth restaurant. Mango smoothies will take you to the tropics, even if that night air reminds you it's still Berkeley.
