“Peet's is the best”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

Peet's is the original Berkeley coffee house. Fortunately they've expanded and now have branches all over the bay area. It's often crowded but has a nice relaxed atmosphere, pleasant decor, and great coffee tea and baked goods. They have better products than Starbucks, treat their employees better, are not nearly so commercial, and aren't always trying to put other coffee houses out of business, the way Starbucks does.

Nice atmosphere, coffee always predictably good. Often crowded but the line usually moves quickly.

“Great coffee at the original Peet's”
Reviewed April 7, 2012

This is the original Peet's coffeehouse (at least by that name; I have heard that there is an earlier one in San Francisco that also claims to be the original Peet's on the basis of Alfred Peet having opened it earlier, though it didn't carry the Peet's name until after the one in Berkeley - but maybe I'm spreading rumors). In any case, Peet's is known for its dark roasted coffee, with its Major Dickason's blend a favorite of Peet's addicts, though I happen to like the Aged Sumatra better. About a decade ago I lived on Le Roy Avenue only a few blocks up the hill from this coffee house, and my Saturday morning ritual involved heading down to Peet's for a cup of the strong, eye-opening coffee always on tap there. I still drop in when I'm in Berkeley, as with a recent business trip. A coffee museum has opened in this place, and is worth a quick look while you're downing your brew.

Though still mostly a west coast phenomenon, Peet's predates Starbucks by about five years, and in fact Starbucks bought their beans from Peet's during their startup year. Albert Peet must be rolling over in his grave at the fact that his friends who founded Starbucks now have the heresy of offering light and medium roasts!

In any case, Peet's is worth a try. If you don't like dark roasted coffee, then you may find it is only worth one try, but if you do like it then you are likely to bond with their offerings quickly.

“A Bay Area Institution”
Reviewed February 3, 2012

Peet's is all about coffee. THe coffee is dark, strong, and flavorful. If it's too strong for you, you can ask them to add just a spot of hot water and you will still get all the flavor. Many people are addicted to peets, and yes, they also sell ground and whole coffee beans. When you buy a pound of coffee, they will give you a small cup of coffee for free. Enjoy!
