“Massage at the Claremont”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

While massages vary, Ron Brillantes gives a consistently excellent massage. He's responsive to my personal pressure needs, attentive to any specific areas I request and meticulous in his professional manner. I highly recommend him. I return time and time again.

We booked a room at the Claremont Hotel to get ready for my sister's wedding. I've been going to the Claremont for about 15 years now. We had appointments to do hair and makeup. Sunny did my sister's hair. What an amazing job she did! So skilled, precise and efficient, it felt like my sister's hair was done in no time. And the end result was stunning, magically staying put throughout the entire wedding. I would definitely book time at this hotel with Sunny to get your hair done for any occasion.

I thought a long time before writing this - it seems in poor taste to give a mediocre review of this Grand Old Dame of hotels...but here goes. The room, a single, was good. Clean, well-appointed, without problems. Decoration throughout the hotel was lovely. But the noise level! Trucks were operating loudly in the back of the hotel very early in the morning; the halls were appallingly noisy, mostly with staff pushing carts and furniture around, talking to each other on cellphones or walkie-talkies; elevator was grinding away at all hours. Not a good place for peace and quiet. And the restaurants - the food was certainly more than adequate, but it is service with an attitude. Efficient, cold, and perfunctory.

Staff at the front desk was helpful, especially with airline ticket printouts. Staff outside the front door - bellhops, car-runners, etc. - was uneven. Location of the hotel was lousy. I didn't try the pool because there were so many little kids in it.

Thank you for taking the time to share your impressions of our historic property. While we are delighted you enjoyed the service provided by some of our associates as well as the beauty of our hotel overall, we can't help but feel disappointed to learn that your stay was disrupted in any way by sounds from outside of your guest room. Please know that one of our associates is available to discuss any concerns that may arise. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back again.

We had booked a double and a twin in February as our two sons in their twenties did not want to share a double bed, When we arrived, in late August, after a 12 hour flight and a four hour car journey (the Bay bridge was closed) we were told that there were no twins as a local college football team had decided to stay and had taken all the twin rooms. When we pointed out we had a pre paid confirmed booking of many months standing we were eventually told our sons would be upgraded to a suite and an additional bed would be put in. In fact they were put into a bog standard room with a sofa bed that had a paper thin mattress. When we complained further it was take it or leave it. The most astonishing thing was that not once was any apology given. Instead we were told the college team were regular customers. Also they did exactly the same thing to my sister over her booking albeit that after a battle they waived one nights accommodation charge. I couldn't be bothered to argue the point but instead simply booked out a day early.

The public areas and the spa/gym are fine but the rooms are very tired and the corridors literally stink of some unidentifiable noxious odour. The best thing about the hotel are the bar terraces which do have great views over the bay at sunset but to describe our fourth floor bedroom as having a "bay view" is ridiculous. You would have to lean out of the tiny window to see the sea. The food is very average and over priced. They charge $28 per night to park. This is not a City centre hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on Fourth floor are smaller and have tiny windows.

We are certainly pleased to know you enjoyed some aspects of your stay however we couldn't be more disappointed that your entire experience was not as positive. An extended day of traveling can certainly be taxing and while it is not clear in what manner your reservations were made, it is truly regrettable that your anticipated accommodations were not available when you arrived. Please accept our most sincere apologies for any inconvenience you experienced. It is our hope that we can have another opportunity to fully impress you with all we have to offer. Thank you for your feedback.

My husband and I loved every moment of our stay at The Claremont. We were thrilled to be able to stay at this gracious and elegant hotel while watching 'THE' OSU Buckeyes play the CAL Bears. From the moment the bell tower came into view, our breath was taken away. The hotel is nestled beautifully on the side of a hill. The gentleman at the front desk, Don White, went out of his way to make our stay memorable.

The hotel is about a mile from campus and the stadium. The walk through the neighborhoods to get the the campus or stadium is also beautiful. The hotel provides ample parking so it's also an ideal place since CAL has such little parking on game days.

Though we didn't eat at it's upscale restaurant, several locals, upon learning we were at The Claremont highly recommended it. We used the exercise facilities and hot tub. This inself was like a high end gym! The lobby was gracious, the shops were nice, and our room was great. It is definitely worth getting a room with a view --which is of San Francisco! (Thank you Don White!)

Loved every moment of our experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view. The views are stunning. I did not see the non view rooms, but I know t...

Claremont Hotel is a great example of a vintage hotel. The rooms, common areas and grounds are kept up well.Views of San Francisco are quite special. Service was quite accommodating. Our hesitation in ranking this hotel as very good to excellent is rooted in its transportation issues. The hotel is on a hill, in a mostly residential area. Unless you have a car, we suggest you think twice about staying there. A hotel of this level should have taxi cabs readily available. Bell captain offers to call taxi but there is a wait of about 15 minutes each time which is very inconvenient. Taxi services in Berkeley is pricey. Bart station is 20 minute walk . Also, do not recommend hotel restaurant for breakfast....unimpressive and pricey. Instead go to Rick and Ann's outside property, across street from tennis courts, but suggest you place name on list 1 hour before you want to eat.
