“Lovely”

We live in the Bay Area but took advantage of a "Living Social" deal. When we checked into the hotel, we were upgraded to a beautiful suite overlooking Berkeley and San Francisco. Everyone at this elegant grand hotel made us feel special, starting and ending with Shabnam at the front desk. We had dinner at the Paragon and breakfast at Meritage, both were great. We will definitely be back!
Hoping for another "Living Social" deal.

grew up in the area- always wanted to stay there so when the opportunity arose, sure enough, we did- parts were great, parts were less so but overall, a great old beauty of a hotel. Don't stay above the 3rd floor unless you check out the room first- small with small windows however after talking to the front desk, they immeditately moved us to a much larger room with a better view. Had great drinks at Paragon- good service, good drinks- nice place. Mad apps and drinks one night at Meritage- very nice, a bit stodgy but good- the live music was good, but a bit loud, hard to hold a conversation. Very nice pool- didn't use the fitness area. Room service was good- decent wait time- just remember that the building is almost 100 years old and hence there are things that could use a little help- all in all a beautiful building, beautiful gounds, etc.

Room Tip: check the room first if you are above the 3rd floor since the roof slopes in and you have small dorm...

I have not spent the night at the Claremont in years, so this review addresses the public areas, restaurants and spa. The public areas are beautiful and spacious and wonderfully decorated. I feel like I'm in a BBC program just sitting and enjoying them. The sofas and club chairs are comfortable as well as attractive. The spa is excellent; I have been there a dozen times. The manicure and pedicure are overpriced (it is a fancy hotel spa, after all) but everything else is appropriate to the quality and location (i.e. not inexpensive, but in sync with what is being offered, including the location.) The food at the restaurants could be better, especially considering Berkeley and the Bay Area are foodie mecca. It's good but not superb. If the food were consistently top notch, I'd give if 5 stars.

The Claremont hotel is surrounded by a beautiful area and situated with a beautiful view. The old charm of this hotel translates into poorly maintained and a lack of attention to detail when it comes to the guest room areas, however. The cleaning of the rooms is sub-par with dirty spots and stains on the walls, the slats on the bathroom door all filthy, stale odors in the room, dirty floor in the shower.

Plan on paying $50 more per night to stay here since they charge you $25 to park and charge a $25 resort services fee which covers the cost of spa use, fitness center, pool, etc. This fee alone will be the sole reason I will never come back.

The spa is a nice set up and good place to relax. Again, major critiques on cleanliness. Dirty grout in the showers and rusty floor drain were not pleasant to look at. In order to use the spa as part of my daily $25 fee, I had to bring the bathrobe from my room to the spa. So I had to leave go get the bathrobe from my closet...but wait, it wasn't in my closet.. so I had to call and get one..and then the associate was a bit pushy on wanting a tip for bringing me what I should have had already. Tacky..

All in all, this place has the potential to be great, but management have taken their eye off the ball.

Loved our stay at the Claremont. Didn't use the spa yet swam in the pool and ate in one night. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. We loved the "old" feel of the Claremont.

Stayed here with the family (kids age 9 & 2) for 4 nights for a family event (not on property). Found the hotel to be very clean & the staff very friendly. The doorman made it a priority to remember who we were & to greet us warmly each time we headed out & returned.

Our room was at the very back end of the hotel, which made for a long walk each time. No issue for us, but something to keep in mind when reserving a room. We did not get a bay view room - if you do get a bay view room, you will not be disappointed with the view. My wife ate at the restaurant near the entrance a few times & seemed to like it. We also went to the pool once - a small trek out the back entrance, but certainly worth it. Definitely self-park during your stay - plenty of spaces & usually not a far walk to the entrance. Elevators were either slow or non-functioning at times - had to take the wraparound stairs about half the time - OK from the second floor, but it would have been more annoying from higher floors. Wifi was spotty at times, perhaps due to being at the end of the hall.

One local restaurant not to miss is Rick & Ann's. We went for dinner, but heard good things about breakfast, too. Really, a ton of good dining options in a few mile radius. The oakland zoo is about 15 mins by car.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Our rate was $149/nt due to the family event. Definitely worth it if you can get a good rate!

Spending some quality time at The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa with the family can be just what everyone needs! It certainly seems that you were able to take advantage of much of what we have to offer from the pool to the views and dining experiences. Thank you for acknowledging our staff for their friendly, attentive service. We truly value our guests and love to do whatever we can to take care of them. It is disappointing, however, to learn of any delay you may have experienced with the elevator and hope that you were not terribly inconvenienced. We value your feedback and hope you will stay with us again.

I have been to the Claremont many times over the years for business lunches, drinks on the terrace and birthday parties - but my wife and I had never stayed there since we only live only 20 miles away.  A Travelzoo offer changed that and decided to spend our anniversary at the resort.  From the moment we arrived, the hotel made a positive impression - a stunning exterior, warm welcoming employees, beautifully polished hardwood floors and gorgeous carpets.  Everything about the hotel said elegance and the condition of the facilities was flawless.

The gentlemen at the front desk, Meyu, congratulated us on our anniversary, offered to make us dinner reservations and promptly sent a bottle of chilled champagne to our room.   The room was large and comfortable and had an amazing view of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco skyline.  The condition of the room was perfect all the way to sparkling white grout around the tub and shower.

The restaurants were also quite nice.  We relaxed over drinks on their deck while drinking in the view then enjoyed a wonderful dinner of fresh grilled salmon in the Paragon restaurant still watching the sun set over SF.   The next morning we lingered over a delicious breakfast in Meritage.  The restaurant staff were friendly and helpful and the food was quite good.

Management deserves high praise for their amazing attention to detail.  We will definitely return!

Room Tip: Room 353 has a spectacular view of the SF skyline
