“The Hotel Durant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

I was in Oakland for business, and usually stay at the Claremont. Our daughter just moved into the dorms at Berkeley, so thought I would try a hotel closer to campus. I loved the Durant. I would say it is as good as the Claremont. The staff is friendly, accomodating and prompt. Henry's is fun, and they even have electrical outlets under the bar for working on the laptop while enjoying an excellent galss of wine.

We recently went to Berkeley for a wedding, and the Durant was the official hotel. Some of the guests were scared off by the lack of air conditioning--the Durant has some sort of historic designation and they're not allowed to make changes like adding a/c--but there was no need to worry. We're talking August in the Bay Area, and at least while we were there the outdoors barely reached room temperature.
The Durant embraces the area's colorful past, with varied results. Historical exhibits mounted on the walls included a partially burned bra, and our bathroom had a photo--tastefully blurred and in strategic spots dark enough to obliterate the details--of a couple gallivanting in the nude. At least one of the desk workers got into the spirit. 40 years ago you would have figured him for a stoner--nowadays he's probably just very relaxed.
The hotel is convenient to a lot of Berkeley, including the campus. It's also convenient to Telegraph Avenue, where the Summer of Love has been turned into a series of souvenir shops.
Some of the negative reviews here seem like over-reactions, but others are probably accurate descriptions of real (but isolated) problems. I'm glad I didn't read the negative reviews before booking the hotel.

Hotel was ideally situated for the football game and other campus-related activities. Walking distance to BART, although return is all uphill. Pleasant room, somewhat noisy even in back because it was the first weekend of the school year, plus tail gates. Front desk and housekeeping staff very helpful and friendly. Valet parking necessary due to traffic, but very timely.

Went to a Cal football game, the Durant is the perfect location for access to the campus. The staff was great with helping us to get an early checkin with adjoining rooms. The rooms were clean but a little quirky in a fun way. It's an older hotel with character. The lobby bar was fun and friendly.

In my rush to checkout, I left a pair of dress shoes in the closet. The front desk and housekeeping were great in returning my call and shipping my forgotten shoes.

We loved this hotel. Walking distance to great shops and restaurants. I would def stay here again! Staff was friendly and helpful. Hotel is big but not too big. Restaurant had good food. Beds were comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on any floor but 1st (windows on 1st floor face brick walls).

I stayed two nights recently for a wedding. I loved that the hotel was two blocks from the Berkeley campus. It's an older property undergoing a big renovation. My room was good sized and I loved the bathroom because they actually left the old bath fixtures with separate hot and cold faucets and great water pressure -- best shower I've had in a hotel in a long time. The room was slightly worn, the furniture dark and the lighting weak, but I wasn't spending lots of time there. You should know there is no AC in the hotel and that if you have a street-facing room, an open window can be loud (you're right next to a university!) -- but I wasn't too bothered. Also, the parking is limited and expensive, but that's everywhere in Berkeley. Overall it was slightly funky, but the staff was wonderful and the location unbeatable.

Do not waste your time or money. Unless you like the company of cockroaches. When confronted, they would not tell me what this critter was (yes, it was my first) and offered to switch rooms. Once in another room, a little apprehensive about staying there, I googled it and found out what it was. I wish they could have had the decency of telling me what it was when I asked instead of playing dumb. I switched hotel.
