From the moment we set foot on to this property, we just fell in love...

We found this place online while looking for a pet-friendly hotel near the Oakland Arena to see a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert last summer. :) It's not quite that close to the arena but within a 15-minute drive. What a treasure this place is - Hotel Durant epitomizes Berkeley!

The building is charming tucked away in the college dorm neighborhood, you almost feel like you're staying in one of the chic'er dorms. :) The decor has so much character - if you grew up in Northern California or went to college in the Bay Area, it will take you back to those college years...and smile! The details that they put in to the decor is very impressive - the door hangers with the room service menu is shaped like a sock, the room key card looks like a student ID, the lamp in the room looks like a gigantic bong... :)

The rooms are small but it is expected in these older buildings. There's no A/C but there's a ceiling fan (most Bay Area homes do not come with an A/C unit).

This hotel is within walking distance to Telegraph Ave. and of course UC Berkeley. It's on a quaint, tree-lined street with little restaurants and shops.

My dog and I enjoyed walking around the residential neighborhood dotted with fraternity and sorority houses.

The service was wonderful - from my initial contact with reservations to the front desk clerk who checked us in, I can't find anything to complain about.

All staff were very polite, helpful, warm & welcoming.
I felt like royalty, and like they enjoyed serving me !
Each time we returned to the hotel we were cheerfully greeted,
and immediately offered assistance.
I love that we never had to wait in lines.

Room Tip: Ask for a large room and you shall receive it if available.

I've stayed at this hotel five times over the past two years, so I can confidently say that I highly recommend this boutique hotel! Wonderful and safe location, great staff, and best of all, Henry's gastropub! (Definitely recommend their martinis and angry mac & cheese, and their breakfast/brunch is also fantastic). The rooms are on the smaller side, and there is a high-end college dorm room vibe, but in a fun and playful way (e.g., bong-shaped lamps). The Graduate Lounge offers complimentary wine and snacks, if you are staying on that floor. I've never had a bad experience here!

Room Tip: as expected, the rooms closer to ground-level and overlooking Durant St. can get noisy, especially o...

Very awesome hotel, unique, great service. Loved it. Get a room on the Executive Level, worth the extra cost. We had the Durant Room, great view. The rooms are small, but very unique. Quiet as well. Staff was very friendly and having Henry's right there was very convenient.

This is a nice funky place - a renovation from a very old building. On the very good side: friendly staff - very helpful. Nice, fun bar. GREAT location if you are there for UC Berkeley (I was attending conference there). You don't really need a car because so much is in walking distance - including campus. They clearly spent a lot of money doing the reservation

I was staying on the second floor near elevator. Some noise but it would only be bothersome if you are sensitive to noise (elevator and other doors closing) - after all it is an old building. The room was of a very good size and the bathroom was disproportionately large. But despite that size the only sink is in the bedroom. My room may have been designated for handi-capable access which I did not need - based on the extensive array of safety bars in the bathroom. Still a sink could have gone in the actual bathroom.

I was there during a warm but not hot period. No - there is no AC. But the windows open and I faced a relatively quiet alley/parking area. Also they provide as standard equipment a very good/powerful floor fan which was fine for me and I tend to like things cold.

The internet was fast and connection was good. The lobby is nice but just seemed a bit dark which on first arrival was off-putting. They could have done something to brighten it up. As I said the bar (lobby floor) is really nice, fun and bright. I read the other reviews and if there was a free breakfast - they never told me about it. I was surprised that the coffee service in the lobby ENDS at 7:30 in the morning. There are coffee makers in the room but I never really like those and the powdered creamers available. Maid service was ok - the place was clean but attention to detail was lacking. No replacement of coffee pods, shampoos, etc. But the desk staff was always friendly and happy to rectify any issue.

I certainly would stay here again - but understand this is not a Hilton Resort :) Among the hotels in the area of the campus - this appears to be the best -- I saw many of the others and they were unappealing.

Room Tip: Check out whether there are sinks available in bathroom or if all rooms have them in bed area (like...

The Hotel Durant is surrounded by U.C. Berkeley and near Telegraph Avenue. As a green hotel, it has no air conditioning, but rooms have ceiling fans and windows to open. I enjoyed my stay there, but was slightly annoyed by the amount of street noise (read rowdy partying at all hours of the weekend nights) that came through my open 5th floor window. The room was cozy and small and overlooked Durant Street--and didn't have room for the sink in the bathroom--it was next to the bed instead. The hotel was very busy while I was there, but I enjoyed the friendly, helpful staff, the breakfast room and the bar as well. I spent a good deal of time in the lobby chatting with friends, and it was comfortable, and decorated with fun, retro photos.
