“Casual vegan Japanese”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We sampled and shared the tempura, gyoza, seaweed salad, seasoned brown rice and Taku-Sui -- a steaming bowl of gyoza, greens, snap peas, tofu, broccoli, mushrooms, thick glass noodles, and rich broth. Everything tasted fresh, well-prepared, well-seasoned. The ponzu sauce and the tempura dipping sauce were tasty. Portions were generous. Our server was busy but attentive and friendly. The place is very family friendly: casual, dishes came out quickly, our little one GOBBLED UP the seaweed salad.

“A Refreshing Dining Alternative for the Solid Citizen”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

Cha-Ya's bright, clean, spare interior, with its cheerful rice-paper light shades, is a fine setting for a no-nonsense vegetarian lunch or dinner. My own favorites are found in the combination dinner set (currently $21.25) served with miso soup and a small and very tasty sunomono salad. Of twelve possible main dishes that may be selected, the Full Moon Sushi Plate and the Cha-Ya Delight (a beautifully presented bowl of gently warmed vegetables) are amply filling but not heavy--leaving a little room for dessert for those who really prefer at least some nonsense to cap their dining experience. Among the desserts, clearly the most substantial is the vegan chocolate cake. A single serving would be enough for two people, and it arrives with two thick portions of frosting. Azuki bean confections are also available and more traditional, but this is Berkeley! In total, the menu is very extensive. There are no less than four soups, twelve salads, several hot vegetable dishes and sushi varieties, and ten noodle dishes (hot and cold). A take-away menu is available for diners who like to do their research and plan ahead rather than face extensive choices when hungry. In a town known for its extravagant dining alternatives, this is a solid, healthy, understated, and rightly recommended place to eat. Cash only.

We were taken here by our son for dinner. The food was delicious and the service was very attentive but not bothersome. I would definitely wan to go back some time.
