“Excellent Hotel in Downtown Berkeley, Perfect Location for U.C. Graduation Ceremonies”
Reviewed February 14, 2011

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Shattuck. Apparently it has been recently (within the past year) rennovated. It was quite comfortable and centrally located in downtown Berkeley. If you are doing any type of business at U.C. Berkeley or attending a graduation ceremony, this would be the place to stay in order to just walk to campus. Two short blocks. The restuarant inside the hotel is wonderfully decorated and the food was excellent. For a fine dining experience we did not find that the prices in the restaurant were out of line at all. The service was good and the food excellent. The only bad thing I could mention would be in the bar. The bar is nice, but on two occassions they had run out of Kaluha and Captain Morgan rum. I have never run into something like this with a fully stocked bar, ever. But other than that, the drinks were very good. I would reccommend this hotel. It may not be cheap, but you won't be sorry you stayed.

The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful and the rooms are comfortable and elegant. We have no complaints about our stay and will surely be back. THE ONLY RECOMMENDATION is that the hotel needs to get together and commit to specific times for room service. They are not clear about it at all. In the rooms they have information that notes "late night dining service" but when we called at 1035 pm on a Saturday evening and wanted something to eat, we were told that it was closed, even though we had checked with the bartender earlier in the evening and had been informed that we could order food until 2 am. We ended up having to order pizza delivered to the room. Again, this is the only downside of this hotel.

This place was really quite good. The decor is really interesting, especially in the halls, an area usually overlooked in all ranges of hotels. By the escape map, I could see that pretty much all of the rooms are different shapes and sizes, which makes for a different experience every time. I happened to have the smallest room on the floor, but it was well furnished and cozy, and compensated for size by being a corner room with three windows. That doesn't happen often! There was no tub in the king room, so you might want to ask if you need that. But the shower was glass and spotless. They have hook-ups for everything in the room, too.

Location is great. It's literally across the street from the Downtown Berkeley BART station and one block from the campus. Ask about the sandwich shop around the corner that looks like a 7-11. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Only negative was outside noise through the windows. With the number of street performers in the area, it was a bit much. Other than that, the room service menu is weak.

With our flight cancelled at SFO, we were stuck in the bay area for an extra night. Since our new flight was our of Oakland, we decided to find a hotel closer to that airport and decided upon the Hotel Shattuck Plaza. Our main reason for choosing this hotel was its proximity to the BART station. After a very long day at the airport (and on the BART), we arrived at the hotel, greeted by a very friendly staff. Upon hearing our story, the manager gave us free drink tickets for the hotel bar to help us unwind. Our room was small, but very well appointed. Modern and clean, it was a pleasure staying here. The hotel is also centrally located, with lots of great restaurants nearby (including the restaurant in the hotel itself).

Wonderful remodel, extremely clean & comfortable. Though my room was slightly small it was very cozy and perfect for a single traveler. Highly recommend. Outstanding restaurant in this hotel. One of the best I've stayed at on business travel. You won't be disappointed.

Quiet rooms are very important to us. We said so on check-in and they delivered. Even with street construction and a big celebration party in the dining room area, our room was wonderfully quiet. Although a little small, the room was very nicely furnished, modern, comfortable and looked brand new. We travel a lot and this was one of the nicest 2-night stays we have enjoyed. For personal business in the University area and a leisure day in San Fransisco the location was perfect. Having flown into Oakland Airport, we used public transportation everywhere and had no problems or delays. Breakfast one morning in the dining room was with slightly disappointing service, but the next day it was very good. Food was great.

I stayed there with 3 adult children and their families. We had stayed there ten years ago, and checked out after one night because it was such a dump. But a zillion dollar renovation has worked wonders. Everything is great. I would have given it five stars if my room were not so tinyñ but all my children nad grandkids ha very reasonable size rooms. The staff are attentive, free internet, helpful front desk, central location. In short everything you would want in a hotel.
