This past weekend I went with my daughter to Berkeley to check out the school and to check out the town. We took the train from Sacramento so we had no vehicle and had to get around by foot. The Hotel Shattuck was an excellent choice! We transferred to Bart in Richmond and the Bart stop in Berkeley was directly across the street from the hotel. The hotel was right in the heart of town with many restaurants, movie theaters and shops within walking distance. And the UC Berkeley campus was only two blocks from the hotel.

When we walked into the hotel we instantly knew we were in Berkeley as we were welcomed by a giant Peace Sign inlaid into the tile entryway. The restaurant had a cute, funky quality with a unique combination of wallpapers and flooring that were nice looking but definitely non-traditional. The hotel is vibrant with many people and lots of action going on. When you enter the hotel there is a bar directly on the right and there always seem to be people there conversing and having a good time.

Our room was a two double bed room and offered plenty of space, We had two windows which looked out onto the street below (and could actually be partially opened to allow fresh air in the room), a flat screen TV and more. The beds were very comfortable and the bedding seemed very plush. We both slept very well.

The next morning we enjoyed brunch in the hotel's restaurant and, though a bit pricey, enjoyed the meal. All in all a great time and I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Berkeley. Some friends of ours also came with us but had a Groupon for the Berkeley City Club. While the public rooms there were beautiful they said that their rooms were terrible and the beds horribly uncomfortable. So they spent most of the time hanging out with us!

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor looking out at the street below. It was beautiful!

We only stayed here for one night and most of our time was spent at a company function downstairs. The rooms are clean and adequate. The service at our party was extraordinary, the food fabulous. Even breakfast the next morning was better than most restaurants. A very nice venue for any get-together.

In 2013, I was a guest at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza for part or all of 28 weeks. The hotel itself is a very nice facility. Each room has its unique quality. Some of the smaller rooms are a bit tight on space. Some rooms were spectacular! I used the elliptical machine in the workout room for 3 or 4 evenings every week; there also were two treadmills and some free-standing weights. Although the bar and restaurant were very active most weeknights, I never had any problem with noise in my room or loud guests wandering the halls at night. The hotel is right across the street from the BART (public rail system) and the UC Berkeley campus is just two blocks away. There are several restaurants and shops in the area. A real strength of the Hotel Shattuck Plaza is the attentive staff. They always did a professional job whenever they helped me. Of course, I knew the front desk receptionists the best, but everyone on the staff made my stays at the hotel such pleasant experiences.

Room Tip: Some of the smaller room (least expensive) are compact. All rooms have closets, but some are very s...

Boutique-y, older, updated, eco-friendly, etc.

I was very happy with this hotel and can see why it is a top rated hotel in Berkeley (thanks fellow TripAdvisor users!) My one night on business was very comfortable. The rooms are updated and modern even though the building itself is quite a bit older. I appreciated the effort to provide eco-friendly bathroom supplies.

I thought the walk to campus would be a little shorter but it took around 25 minutes uphill to get to the Bechtel Engineering building. So keep that in mind if you are staying here for business at Cal. A $5 cab ride may be worth it.

Nice lobby that gives a charming first impression. Service was ok, no complaints, breakfast food actually better than most hotels. As for room, not impressed. Not sure if this is there standard or if someone had literally broke a bottle of cologne in our room, but it smelled so strong it was nauseating!! The rooms are small, like NY or SF rooms and bathrooms even smaller, not a single counter in the bathroom for getting ready. The absolute worst as mentioned by other reviewers is the parking. For some reason the staff has little to no knowledge about the public lots, didn't even know what time they opened in the morning if you had to worry about getting out to make a flight. Other than the lobby and restaurant very disappointing!

My entire experience was great! This historic hotel has been renovated to contemporary meet French decor. My room was comfy, technology saavy, quiet and just enough room for my weekend stay. The bar downstairs is super lively and cool. The room service Menu looks great. While in the heart of Berkeley, there are tons o cute restaurants, bars and shops within blocks

This is a very good boutique hotel in the middle of Berkeley very close to BART (public rail system). The lobby is not for browsing, although there is an bar area and restaurant - part of the hotel - that locals told us is not bad. Rooms are comfortable, updated, "cozy"; similarly, the bathroom was small but modernized. Service was friendly and efficient, e.g., water was brought to our room immediately. The decor in the hallways is a purposeful tribute to the 60's. We have stayed in many hotels in the area over the years and found this to be our preference on this side of the Bay, unless we want a resort atmosphere such as the Claremont. We didn't check out the gym so I can't rate that. On a tangent, and nothing to do with the hotel, avoid taxis from the Oakland airport. Normally we have our own car, but this trip flew to Oakland and then took a cab to the hotel. The taxi fare was higher than any other major city in which we have used cabs, and I mean, NYC, London, Paris. Next time we'll take BART, especially with the station almost next door.
