Comfortable, nicely furnished rooms and baths near to U Cal and BART. Service was great, as were all the amenities.

Room Tip: I had a basic room, which had a good sized bath, but no in-room coffee. However, Starbucks is around the corner, and it's better than in-room coffee. Suites have in-room coffee, but the bathrooms in them are smaller.

Spent an evening last week at the Shattuck on the recommendation of a luxury hotel in SF -- so I was expecting 4* accommodations and service. The Shattuck fell short, but here are the reasons (you might find them just dandy):
a) When making the reservation (with the front desk 2 days in advance) my inquiry regarding parking and valet charges produced the response: "there's no charge for this with the rate you've booked." --- turns out there was no valet or parking at all, and we were sent across the street for $19/day.
b) Front desk staff (manager plus 3) was very disorganized, distracted, and seemed to be practicing more stand-up comedy or reality-TV than customer service.
c) Our request for a nice, quiet room left us in an ADA room overlooking Shattuck on Friday night (very noisy) --- we did not require any ADA accomodation.
Regarding (b) and (c) --- at 1pm it took four folks and 40min to check our bags and refer us to return after 3pm for a better room (only doubles were available at 1pm, and we booked a king). Manager assured us a much more comfortable and quiet room would be held for us when we returned. When we returned, we were given the wrong bags with our claim checks and the front desk person changed the reserved room to the 5th floor ADA room overlooking the street noise with the explanation that it would be more spacious (never mentioning the nature or location of the room). During the night on two occasions pranksters pressed the "open the door" button setting of bright flashing lights and a loud siren --- with that, and the street noise, it wasn't such a comfortable room, even for the 5th floor (street noise was very disruptive as late as midnight).

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before agreeing to the room.

We certainly regret that this guest did not have a stay that we are generally known for. I am most disappointed that we were not able to resolve their concerns during the stay, which is when we always like the opportunity to reconcile a missed expectation. All the same, information such as this is helpful for us to learn where we are doing well and where we can improve. I trust that we will have another opportunity with this guest to prove that we are than a charming Berkeley hotel as noted in many other reviews.

In early February we stayed at Hotel Shattuck again. It was our second visit and it was another good experience.

A snazzy contemporary renovation has created a very comfortable hotel near U Cal & BART. Only detraction was the small fitness center.

nice place to stay close to university of california, berkeley. I stayed here for 3 nights during a recent campus recruiting trip to berkeley. Front desk service can be hit or miss .. when i checked in, service was prompt but during checkout I happened to ask for change to feed the parking meter but he completely forgot about it while I was waiting ... Location is good, smack on shattuck ave and close to restaurants and convenience stores .. there is a starbucks around the corner, yay !!! I had breakfast once @ restaurant five, it was pretty good .. this was my first time staying in berkeley, generally found the area around shattuck as not the nicest part of the town .. homeless people abound on the streets .. I found public parking close to the hotel just a few steps away .. the hotel offers complimentary wifi but for some reason I could not connect to it on the iphone .. I found the wash basin in the bathroom to be particularly tiny .. overall the room was small but comfortable .. the lobby of the hotel was tastefully decorated with bright red chandeliers, exuded some kind of a boutique feel to it ..
