We booked two rooms for the family to visit son at Cal. Both rooms amazingly small, one barely fit the bed with room to navigate from one side to the other. Clearly a one-person room--no drawer space to speak of. Enjoyed the homeless convention outside; very cordial albeit fragrant. Did I mention cheap? Not even complimentary coffee in the morning; four bucks a cup in the lobby. No mini bar, no fridge, no coffee maker, no movies, no pool, no second wash cloth. Two treadmills, one stepper, and some dumbells in the fitness center. The bar/lobby is noisy but attractive. On the plus side, the included internet acess is flawless.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza for the second time within a year. I gave it an excellent review the first time but this time was even better. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on rating hotels as for the past 40 years, I have been a professor of Hotel and Restaurant Management here in the U.S. and also in Europe. The hotel is still relatively new but has the service and attitude of a world class boutique hotel that has been around for many years. The people that work there from top management all the down the line really perform like they love working there and this is a very rare quality in this day and age. The rooms are beautiful and very well maintained. Their restaurant called "5' is top rate and could easily hold its own as a stand alone eatery I know this as my travels have taken me to restaurants all over the globe. The whole operation is a testament to ownership and I highly recommend this property to anyone visiting Berkeley.

If you need to stay near UC Berkeley (walking distance) or want to have convenient access to the downtown area, I would not recommend any other hotel. I have stayed at both the Durant hotel and Hotel Shattuck Plaza and there is no comparison. I had to stay at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza for two weeks, and the staff was extremely friendly and the room was clean and very comfortable. Another friend who stayed recently stated that the staff treated them, "Like royalty." This hotel is excellent and definitely deserves 5 stars.

Stayed here last New Year's Eve and had an absolute blast. Our room was gorgeous and we fell in love with this hotel, it is a gem.
Just checked in awhile ago and found ourselves in a teeny tiny room #403. Very disappointing. And the view is of ugly roof-tops and the garbage dumpsters. It's obviously a room designed for a single traveler. I had to call down to the desk to get towels (there was only one) and wash cloths. Obviously there is a trick to getting a good room and we don't know what it is. It's still a great location and not a bad price for the area @ $219 per night.

Room Tip: Ask if they're giving you one of the teeny tiny rooms. Okay if all you plan to do is sleep. Not enuf room for yoga though!

We regret that your most recent stay with us did not meet expectations. Due to the historic nature of Hotel Shattuck Plaza, our guestrooms do vary in shapes, sizes, and views. We take your comments seriously, and have changed that room type from a Traditional King to a Business Class room for single occupancy.

Our Front Office Manager will be contacting you to ensure your next stay is a pleasant experience.

Sincerely,
Euan Taylor

Stayed here while attending a family wedding in the Berkeley area. Very nice, high quality accommodations. Our room was a bit tight, but similar to most large metro area rooms. Very unique bar is available in the lobby. Felt extremely safe due to their security measure. Great food of all ethnicities within a stone's throw. Public (expensive) parking is available across the street. Definitely would return.
