Located in the Solano section of Berkeley this establishment offers a solid option for Chinese food. My recommendation is to get the hot and sour soup which was divine. The noodle dishes offer many choices and you can't go wrong. Our waiter suggested the crispy scallops which were very good. If you like traditional dishes stick with Kung Pao or Sichuan chicken. The atmosphere is real nice with the kitchen area exposed for patrons to see chefs cooking away. With many area restaurants offering this type of food Kirin is a solid choice.

Besides great food, the bar drinks are great also. I had two margaritas this time.

Service is always fast and friendly.

Parking can be tight.

Kirin's can be crowded around dinner. It s really popular with the locals.

I think you will keep returning to Kirin's like I do once you visit.

Step into Kirin and the atmosphere is immediately calming- quiet music is playing, the lighting is not overly bright. High ceilings, tile floors and lots of Asian art, and what looks to be a very nice bar. Despite an open kitchen the noise level is low. The menu is extensive and includes many less common dishes not found among the "usual suspects" of Bay Area Chinese restaurants. I ordered a dish described as spicy dry chicken, while my wife ordered beef with cumin and green onions. Both were absolutely delicious. The spicy chicken indeed had some heat, but also layers of other flavors, and the cumin beef was delightfully complex and aromatic. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. A nice touch was that much (although not all) of the music playing was contemporary settings of classical Asian themes. I'd like to explain that belter but it would take a paragraph!
We will definitely be back to investigate the menu further.

My hubby and I go to Kirin about once a week, and are always happy with the food there. For the lunch special,
you get your choice of a large variety of dishes (the really spicy ones are marked with peppers) rice, salad and soup, and the soup is always delicious! Dinner menu is huger and has lots of seafood! Full bar! Atmosphere and interior is dark and stylish.

What's not to love, unless you're on an anti-carb kick. The noodles -- variously prepared by an aware and fast-working mostly-Mexican kitchen staff (!!) -- are just great. Granted, this is not rocket science, but the results are fantastic, ranging from peanut sauce (spicy, lively, fun, but a bit sloppy to eat), to seafood mixtures, to siaolungbao (the classic dim sun staple), and there's good beer and effectively quick service to go with it. Much to recommend this place, and little to speak against it -- except for big crowds on weekends. A lunch, solo or in a small group, is perfect.
