“an old favorite”

We used to eat here quite a bit, but hadn't been back for years. It's a bit pricey, but still good. The menu is not as extensive as it was years ago, with fewer fresh fish choices.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Had lunch with co-workers here about six months ago and everyone's food was pretty good, so picked it as a half-way place to meet an old friend. We decided to sit in the bar and order off the bar menu. Our waitress was excellent - quick, accurate and friendly. I'm knocking off the first star for the waiter who helped to bring our order to the table. As he's putting down my bowl of chowder he's tipping the tray - my friend points this out to him. By now he's slopped chowder all over the side of her bowl and on the plate. He puts it down and walks away. Seriously? We signal our waitress who immediately comes over and overs to replace it. That should have been a no brainer. And now the food. They're supposedly known for their clam chowder and it was really pretty horrible. Beyond thick - more like lumpy - overly salty and a weird brownish color. The calamari were just okay. Nothing wrong with them and nothing outstanding. The shrimp tacos were just weird. Flour tortilla, breaded shrimp that reminded me of the popcorn shrimp from Popeye's Chicken, a little bit of lettuce, a little bit of cheddar cheese (really?) and some kind of mayo-based sauce. It's surprising to get a totally lame "fish" taco in California, and at a restaurant that actually has the word "fish" in their name.

“Over PRICED”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

Saturday late lunch for three adults, two children. Service was fine and food as described. Two negatives stand out: cup of clam chowder was EXTREMELY salty [so bad it was sent back, replacement only slightly better] and the fish of the adults fish & chips was sub-standard. In fact, one child ordered the F&C from the kids menu and the fish was superior. On balance, way over priced for the quality. Not a place I'd recommend or visit again.

“Disappointing Landmark Restaurant”
Reviewed June 9, 2013 via mobile

Our first stop off the plane was Spenger's. The nautical decor was impressive--probably the best part of the visit. Service was beyond slow. Waitress was pleasant enough. Calamari was just ok, as it was soggy. The crab and shrimp on English muffin was tasty, but the French fries undercooked and needed more time in the fryer. The linguini and shrimp was ok, but only three shrimp in the whole dish. While it was noble that a good samaritan bought two pan handlers lunch, their presence unfortunately made us uncomfortable. Overall disappointing experience.

“Classic Fish House”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Great creative drink menu (had a cucumber, celery, martini concoction) and my salmon/mushroom dish was perfect. Went at 6PM midweek - no crowds. Definitely Fisherman's Wharf (SF) or New England feel -- but that is what I wanted. Would definitely return!
