Vik's, a well known restaurant in West Berkeley, is easy to get to by car. I take out of town visitors here, and everyone loves it. Bringing pan-Indian food to the West Berkeley area, I like to go whenever I'm there. I like the weekday Thali the best, for value and for flavor, the masala dosa is my weekend favorite.

Viks is beloved in Berkeley. All kinds of people come here for the great Indian snack and street food. The atmosphere is noisy and casual to put it mildly. You get your food from the counter and take it to your table. No tabkecloths and sound echoes. Viks has limited evening hours. Don't come here for ambience but for tasty food that is hard to find anywhere else.

This is a place to go if you are hungry for good food but don't care about the atmosphere. It's like eating in a cafeteria. You order, pay and they call your name when your food is ready. You go to the counter and get your food. And it's also inexpensive, which is nice. Personally, I think the service could have been better. Maybe they could give you a number and when your food is ready, someone could bring it to your table. It was really loud in there and hard to understand the person calling out names. At the very least, they should have a waiter coming around and refilling water glasses. I had to get up four times to get more water. The food was a little too spicy for me, but my family loves spicy food so they were fine with it. When we left, we were full, having tried several tasty, authentic Indian foods, many of them vegetarian.

Vik's Chaat is akin to a Jewish deli. You order at the counter and then hope to find a table and wait til your name is called to pick up your order. the atmosphere isn't beautiful but the whole environment is fun and the food is delicious!! Vik's is a must-go-to whenever we're in the San Francisco area.

Seriously, some of the best food I've had. There are vegan and gluten-free options which makes it a great place if you have a limited diet. Keep in mind that it is more of a cafeteria style rather than a sit down restaurant. The portions were large and the flavors were incredible! Plus, there's a tiny market attached where you can buy some Indian essentials if you're so inclined.
