“Fresh Seafood with a View”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

This historic waterfront setting serves up fresh seafood with great views of the Bay. It was the perfect stop to catch up with an old friend. We found the service very friendly, good drinks and great appetizers. The Market Fresh Fettucchini with Dungeness and Rock Crab was to die for. French onion soup was made proper. Great variety for fresh seafood. There is something for everyone as they also offer a raw bar, steaks and roasts. Portions were good and the atmosphere dark and cozy. Prices were in line for market fresh food. Great views with city lights everywhere you look across the bay. A wonderful dining experience.

“Beautiful View, Slow Unprofessional but Friendly Service, OK Food”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

Skates has been around Berkeley for quite a time now. Unfortunately for me, they are "on the water restaurant who's food is just okay but spectacular view".
Drinks were good and Wine list is decent. It took nearly 40 minutes to get them though. It was a Saturday busy 6 p.m. as we arrived an hour before sunset and figured we'd be out right after sunset. Because the delay in service we were there almost 3 hours.

We had the grilled romaine salad and the arugula salad. Everything was fresh on both but the arugula was overly vinegary and the goat cheese was not so good. The Grilled romaine was very good but they put too much dressing on it.

The fried Calamari and vegies was just okay and not that great. It was deep fried and nothing fabulous about it; just okay.

The Seadfood Etoufee was very very spicy. They should have warned us not to pour all the sauce on it as the spicy sauce was way too spicy. It was a good solid dish though but I thought for $29.95 they could have had more than two (large they were) scallops and seafood on the plate.

The crabmeat fettucine was very good and had a good amount of crabmeat. That probably was the best of all they had.

I would go back again but probably just for appetizers as I didn't think the food deserved the prices; we were paying for the view which when the sun went down goes dark!

“Awesome food, service and view!!”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

My wife and I went to Skates after a day in the City and to celebrate my birthday. From the bartender making perfect drinks to the hostess calling us by name as she seated us and wishing me a "Happy Birthday", to our server providing superb service, to the food which was incredible, this was the perfect dining experience. Topping it all off is the unbelievable view. Just can't beat this place.

“Seafood is not bad but the view is spectacular”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

This restaurant is located right on the bay and is known for its seafood. I was a bit dissappointed with the food but overall it was okay. I don't think the price we paid is worth it.

“Great Service!!!”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

I reserved through Open Table and asked for a table by the window...got it! My husband always likes to know right away what they are 'known' for - Waitress started out by telling us their signature dishes :) Service was great! Food was very good! Views - beautiful!
