After missing out another night, we were happy to get a table, following a graduation ceremony for lunch. The service was good and prompt. The food was all wonderful; the graduate was especially happy!

I had dinner at Ajanta with five other family members; four adults and two children. We made a reservation since Ajanta can be busy on a Saturday night. Our table was ready at the time we had reserved for. Three of us seated at one end of the table (2 square tables put together) shared our entrees which is very easy to do here. They serve everyone a plate with scoops of plain white rice with spinach sauce in the center of the plate, and the entree is on a separate plate, easy to pass around. Each place setting includes a large spoon for serving the entree. You can order food from mild to hot and we ordered medium and it was just right for tasting a variety of dishes. We also shared a small pot of chai tea which allowed for a half cup for three people, maybe a little more. Presentation of the food was very nice. Service was fast and attentive, water glasses were filled and re-filled as needed. The two chutneys I tried were interesting and good, one a sweet and one of carrots. Bread is a naan bread served with the meal and it was also very good.
Ajanta has a large menu of dishes from various areas of India. They feature organic chicken for some of the dishes. They also have lamb dishes, and many vegetarian dishes to choose from. The curries were interesting and complex. We particularly liked the tandoor. The eggplant is said to be very good although we did not order it on this occasion.
A very pleasant dining experience with great service, wonderful food, and an inviting atmosphere. I hope to return when I am in the area again. The family members who live in the Bay Area eat here often.

Compared with Indian restaurants in other cities, Ajanta is merely average although it may indeed be the best of its kind in Berkeley.

We had vegetable samosas, vegetable pakoras, papadam, and we ordered an off the menu item: hot pepper pakoras. The hot pepper pakoras were disappointingly mild as they were lacking in capsaicin. The samosas, pakoras, and papadam were neither very bad nor very good.

We had Dakshini Gosht (a lamb stew special for the month of May), chicken pistachio korma, sabzi rangarang (vegan cauliflower, green beans, broccoli, carrots, peas, onions, tomatoes in coconut milk), saag paneer, mixed vegetable kofta (potatoes, cauliflower, and peas balls in a curry sauce), two orders of plain nan, and one order of nan with cashews. Again, the food was neither exceptionally bad nor exceptionally good, but merely OK.

The lamb stew was ordered hot, but it was merely gringo mild.

For dessert, we all shared one order of Gulab Jamun. As usual, it was both rich and sweet.

Ajanta has a wine list, but the staff is not knowledgeable. When drinking wine with a spicy Indian meal, eschew oak and favor fruitiness.

Will I return? No, there must be better choices elsewhere.

Will I recommend it? Yes, but only to diners who are afraid to taste the full flavor of Indian cuisine.

We love Indian food but have trouble with spiciness. This restaurant is wonderful because they completely adhere to their spiciness scale, if they say it is 0, it is not spicy at all but still delicious flavors. I definitely recommend the portobello mushroom, as good as foie gras but without the poor goose being involved, they cook it in some magical oven, it's marvelous.
All their dishes are a mix of contemporary and classical flavors with crisp original pairings. A don't miss if you are in the area. They even have a recipe book.

Ajanta which is named after the infamous caves in India, has wonderful food. I always have enjoyed my meals at this restaurant.
