This was a fabulous dinner. Menu varies & was limited to 7 entrees, plus. All sounded intersting & made in-house by chef Alaun Grimaud. My friends said better than their experience at Chez Panisse. We raved of all our dishes, as Grilled Lamb rack with farro, fennel, & picholine olive relish. Glazed snap peas, Roasted beets with hazelnut picada/currants/, Broccoli w calabrian chilies, Grilled asparagus, Rhubarb turnovers. Entrees ranged $22 - 35. Full bar. Staff will make you feel special, as is their food and service. This is a small, very quiet venue. Such a discovery; we were thrilled. It is hidden in the Berkeley City Club, which is a combination of private club, and small hotel, and event venue. No signage, entrance limited; think reservatn will admit U.

“A Perfect Experience”
Reviewed May 6, 2014 via mobile

The food could have been marginal and this still would have been a great dining experience. But, the food was great!

We had an appetizer based on gnocchi ... With small pieces of short ribs so tender they cut with a fork. Our main course was a halibut with a unique combination of corn, onions, mushrooms and lentils. Most excellent!

Service was first class - staff are friendly and know their craft. These are polished people serving great food and they know it.

But, that's not all. The ambience is classic late art deco... In perfectly preserved condition. This is a dining experience that should not be missed.

“Excellent restaurant!”

Food was fantastic. Especially impressed that they offered gluten free rolls since my husband usually cannot eat bread in restaurants because he has wheat & corn allergies.

“Great place and excellent meal”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

The entry is a little off putting as one enters by climbing a set of steps and entering into what seems like the entry to an old school. Don't be fooled. The Berkeley City Club was built as a women's club in the early 1930's and exhibits the classic characteristics of California Spanish Revival. Today it continues to have rooms available for guests as well as the restaurant and lounge open to the public.

We had drinks in the lounge prior to dining and really enjoyed the atmosphere. This a place for a more restrained crowd, not 30 somethings looking for "bottomless" cocktails. Full bar and house made tapas at reasonable prices. Excellent service.

The beautiful dining room would be worth seeing even if the dinner experience wasn't as good as it it. Again, friendly professional staff. By 7:30 pm when we left the place was full. On a Wednesday night!

I had a lovely Petrole Sole and my wife had the perfectly prepared raviolis. We shared an excellent dessert.

If you are in Berkeley for a nigh or two consider the Berkeley Club for an in the center of town location and definitely try the restaurant. We will be back!

“memorable romantic dining in historic building”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

The experience at Julias was one we will remember for a long time. First, the ambiance in the dining room of the historic Julia Morgan designed building is exquisite. It is elegant and serene and very romantic. Then, the attentive service from Tony, ably assisted by Hunter, was absolutely top-notch; friendly but professional, with all questions answered and all dining needs met. Food and wine recommendations were spot on. From the five main courses, we chose the grilled pork chop with organic polenta and brussel sprouts, and the crispy chicken breast with creamy grits. Both were delicious, as were the sides of roasted organic beets and celery root soup. Other entrees included rack of lamb, petrale sole, and bavette steak. There is a very nice wine list, but selections by the glass are a bit limited. A full bar is also available. Prices are reasonable for this kind of experience.
