“Great place to stay in Berkeley”
Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for one night and after getting a deal on living social. The hotel is centrally located and we were able to walk to Memorial Stadium to watch the Cal game. There wasn't a TV in the room but we agreed that it was a good touch seeing as you should be enjoying the sights, not TV. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to swin in the pool but it looked amazing. If you can find a good deal on a room here, definitely give it a shot. Also, if you're staying here and you want a good dinner try the Cajun restaurant a few blocks down on Shattuck.

I booked this hotel because of a good deal from Livingsocial for $99/night with breakfast included. I was excited to stay here after checking out their website. It is a historical landmark in Berkeley and it shows with the inimitable style of Julia Morgan, the same architect of the Hearst Castle. The rooms though are another matter. As with the older hotels, they have a musty smell to them which makes it feel like the room is not clean even if it is. I booked 2 rooms and was upgraded to a suite on one of them. The suite is huge but disappointing. The furniture in the sitting room did not seem to match the period. The room itself was painted a sickly orangey peach color. The bed was quite small, probably a full size. The floor looked like they had stripped the original carpet and you could see the unevenness of the pavement which was covered up with paint and rugs. I guess I was expecting more from this hotel based on their website. The room was not inviting at all and I was glad that I only booked the one night. The bathroom had dirty grout on the tile floor, maybe original, and the sink had a separate spout for hot and cold water so it was either freeze or burn when you washed your hands. The tub had a fabric shower curtain all around which tends to stick to your body as you showered. The breakfast was served in a beautiful room with a grand fireplace. We toured the hotel and the architecture is indeed lovely. Unfortunately the rooms do not match the rest of the public areas of the hotel. If redecorated and fitted with modern conveniences it could be grand and beautiful hotel. If you like staying in historical places then this is the place for you. As for me, I would not stay here again.

This hotel has its history and charm, but what I was really impressed was with the quality of the services there. Everything was perfect: the food (breakfast & dinner), the room was impeccably clean, the manager (Trevor) and his team were always ready to help and I got a room with a wonderful view to the bay. It's very well located (few blocks walking to the University of California). It worthed every dollar I paid. I will certainly come back.

Situated within blocks of University of California , this old club turned into a hotel echoes an earlier time. My room was neat, very clean, and charming. Breakfast was lovely, and the pool a
wonderful treat. I would stay here again.

Yes, the building is beautiful, but it would be enough to take a tour of it. The service was not up to the standard of a professionally run hotel. Breakfast was not ready on time when we stayed, and staff could not quite keep on top of the demand when guests were let in. The room was tiny; I believe the bed was a double (as opposed to a queen-sized), and the bathroom facilities were as they were in the 30's, e.g. no mixer faucet for hot and cold water in the sink. Outside, on the street, a man screamed and cursed for a good part of the night. The management said that sometimes occurs. The front desk staff was not very forthcoming. For example, when I called prior to arrival to ask driving directions, the man who answered told me to get them from the internet. Well, we seniors don't (as yet) have a smartphone.

The aspect of the hotel we really enjoyed was the beautiful indoor pool. However, not wishing to have another sleepless night, we moved to the ritzy and glitzy Claremont hotel, which, surprisingly, did not cost much more.

this isn't really a hotel in traditional sense, some kind of historic club. Most definitely a very cool historic building but service was very poor. VERY rude lady at the front desk.
rooms are very basic but charming in a strange way! Noisy area, loud construction site right next door. No a/c of course so windows need to be open all night... fine but noisy.
one thing that REALLY ticked me off was the parking fee, NO notice at gate of parking lot of rate charges, no mention by front desk when he told me where lot was. wasn't until I checked out & questioned the fee , the front desk was very curt and said "it's in the small print" ... she was rude and belligerent. Parking on the street would have been fairly easy.

I stayed at this historic hotel for business. I was attending the career fair at Berkeley, and this hotel is just a 5 minute walk from the main campus. The rooms are small and have "old world" charm. That being said, it is very clean. Breakfast is complimentary and it is served buffet style in a very elegant way in a lovely room with a fireplace and fresh flowers in each table.
