This is an old (1950's) hotel - that has been recently updated. The recent updating and the incredibly helpful and pleasant staff are the reason the hotel was better than expected.
It is an old hotel and there is a big "Please be quiet sign" in neon at the end, suggesting that noise could be a problem - BUT I noticed no problems at all (though I would not recommend this place for a romantic weekend, unless you are either an exhibitionist or celibate).
Also, because the climate in Berkeley is beautiful year round, they have no A/C in the rooms, so on a warm day (like when I arrived) I needed to leave the windows open before the room cooled. I am a freak for air-conditioning so this was a big minus - but by bed time the temperature was perfect (after leaving windows open).
There are restaurants within walking distance that are good.
Overall a great choice on a budget!
