this is another quintessential Berkeley experience. All the ingredients are sourced from local, organic sources including many farms across the bay in Marin county. i particularly like the pizza but there are many dishes to satisfy both the vegetarian and carnivore. The dinning room is a bit loud but filled with the excitement of dinners enjoying their dishes and company. Friendly, young staff.

Good location, easy public parking around the corner. A bit noisey.

Food is interesting with some nice vegetarian options but a bit pricey for the quality (didn't seem very fresh but it was Sunday at 1:00pm). Ordered the duck confit hash, (just ok), squash pancakes (tasty), burger (really good) and tomatoe pizza (the best of what we ordered). Cocktails are interesting but $10 for a mimosa...

Website and their back story is more creative than their food. Not sure I'd go back for dinner.

When I dine out, I sometimes feel like I'm looking at the same menu over and over again regardless of where I go. I promise you, that won't happen at Gather. I can't recall going to a restaurant where I was more impressed with the creativity reflected in the menu. What's more, the dishes are expertly prepared. There's passion in this place. The setting is unpretentious. And the service is good.

Make sure you get reservations....even for lunch! As this place is busy. But it is worth it - it has everything from meat to vegan selections and they were delicious. The cocktails looked creative too, we just didn't want to try one for lunch. I had an eggplant sandwich and my husband had a beef sandwich - both totally yummy. The pizzas looked fantastic. Definitely will be back!

Was finally able to make another visit to Gather in Berkeley, and once again the food was great but this time the service was much improved. We got in early on a Saturday, sat at the bar immediately, and had some great cocktails and great food.

Generally we find it more beneficial to order a larger numbers of smaller plates in this style of restaurant but we have had a mix of everything. The latest visit included some of the following highlights:

The sardines with grilled calamari over avocado and pickled vegetables was out of this world, the highlight of our 3 restaurant tour that night. The ink and chili oil really made it too.

Pizza was quite filling, surprisingly so. It was the special of the night with pancetta, fresh greens, and figs and could have used a bit of oil or something, but was still well accepted.

Pork kidneys with lentils (another special) were ok at first, but as the dish got smaller and smaller, we liked it more and more until we basically licked the plate clean.

The only complaint we have about Gather is that it is relatively expensive and there are other similar options in Berkeley and Oakland that come in a little cheaper for what we consider just as good. However, since our favorite restaurant Cellar Door in Santa Cruz changed chefs, Gather is the closest food we can find to what that used to be. Farm to table, excellent presentation, very fresh tastes.

Definitely a restaurant I recommend for a Berkeley eating experience, but Oakland offers more/cheaper/better.
