Owner description: Past Strawberry Canyon is the 34-acre Botanical Garden, which holds about 13,000 species of plants. The species are organized according to regions of the world, and the garden has a great collection of native Californian plants. Bring a picnic basket and some money for the bookstore and admission (closed the first Tuesday of each month and free on the first Thursday of each month). Be sure to check out the conservatory (for tropical plants) and the Chinese medicinal herb garden. The garden is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. every day of the year except the first Tuesday of each month, Thanksgiving Day, December 24 and 25, December 31, January 1, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tours are also available on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

We needed an attraction for kids for three hours - this was great. Kids liked checking out plants - seeing those from their favorite countries. They have a nice little gift shop where we purchased a plant. The parking is reasonable but limited. The fee for the gardens is very affordable and worth it. It is on a hill with trails so takes some energy - good for kids to work off excess. Great views from the observatory up the hill.

I am a gardening geek and so i immediately joined this upon arrival in California from Texas. They have plants from throughout the world arranged by region and type. The tours depend upon whom your guide is and your questions and the people in your group but the guides are informed and informative. They periodically have special "classes" on a variety of botanical interests from succulents to whatever but book in advance and I think they fill quickly. Absolutely lovely day or half day of information and beauty. Bring along a picnic lunch to partake in one of the parks in the area. Or sit and watch the fog come in at the end of the day because the garden is located along some winding roads with views of the bay.
PARKING available by meter in a lot across the street. Watch your kids but I don't think kids will enjoy for long.

March is the time for magnolias. A great maps shows the 20 most endangered and rare magnolias spread in the garden. The $8 fee is not charge to residents or those who are members of conservatories in other states.

Up, up a hill above the Berkeley campus is the setting of the rambling and peaceful botanical gardens, much larger than I had imagined. Great for wandering or pondering life in one of the many well-situated benches, the gardens have well-labeled plant life and nice greenhouses. I loved the natural feeling throughout of a continual gardening work-in-progress. The staff and student workers should feel a great sense of pride in these beautiful gardens. Beware: bus does not go to gardens on weekends and it's a long, uphill stroll to get there.

There's a lot to see. The garden is very well maintained. I was hoping for more information on the actual trees and plants, but that is a minor thing. You can spend a lot of time there.
