Tucked away above in the hills. A great place for children to explore on their own. There a varieties of global plants that thrive in the environment. It's wonderfully design to have a peaceful moment onto yourself even with energetic children. Not crowded at all. There are people sketching. Bring a snack and water. Need at least 2 hours without being rushed.

I love to garden. So much variety and the plants are so lush. A stroll is always good. It doesn't matter whether its sunny or rainy.

The UC Botanical gardens are really nice, giving you an overview of many different regions for plant growth and also having several spots with a nice overview of the SF Bay area. You can certainly drive there, but it is difficult to reach by public transportation. There is no regular bus route. However, there is an option. The University of California runs a bus called Hill shuttle from the central campus (Mining circle) every 10 and 40 minutes after the hour. Anybody can use the service for $1 each way. If you time your visit to be at the downhill stop around 25 or 55 minutes after the hour, you will catch the bus down the hill just in time. Unfortunately, the road does not really offer a nice sidewalk. And if you chose to buy a plant and are not driving, getting on the bus might save you, and your plant.

We visited Bot Garden early in the calendar year when the newts were mating. There were docents on hand to answer any questions a visitor might have. While the weather was crisp and it was too early for many western plants to be blooming, the garden still astonishes with its incredible assortment of plant life from around the globe. The time, thought, and care lavished on the Botanical Garden make it worth seeing any time of year.
Note that strollers are difficult to push on many of the paths, and only some paths are fully accessible but the Garden itself is family-friendly. Bring the kids, sunscreen, and a wind-proof jacket.

The best botanical garden in the Bay Area. I love Blake Garden, but this Garden is truly a fantastic botanical garden. They have areas of plants from all over the world. The plant sales are worth being a member.
