Owner description: Almost as if we haven't lost a moment of time... Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley is still so reminiscent of the 60's that you will feel as if you have traveled back in time when you visit Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. The shops and eateries are a mix of quintessential hippie-dom mixed with the current U.C. Berkeley modern day student. Both seem to blend together in a medley that makes shopping and eating here almost a cultural or historical trek as well as a great shopping one.

Iconoclastic Berkeley -- great hole-in-the-wall restaurants juxtaposed with chi-chi ones, pedestrian friendly, campus-close and chock full of Telegraph Avenue artists selling their wares (and sometimes wares from third-world countries) in a sort of mellow street market. Great fun to browse, wander and talk to some unusual folk.

Spent a Sunday afternoon wandering in and out of shops and chatting with street vendors. Amazing variety of international and handcrafted jewelry and goods, as well as some fun Beserkeley elements. Paid $12 for parking garage as there were no spaces on street, but recieved more than $12 of cost-free fun, so I consider that breaking even. Immensely impressed with Japanese "dollar store" for cute, unusual and cheap stuff. Getting toward dusk the local homeless start setting up their nightly spots, letting you know it is time to get to your next destination.

Telegraph Avenue runs from the very south side of the UC Berkeley campus down to Oakland. In the first few blocks south of the campus, you get a flavor of the more exotic Berkeley. Back in the day of Vietnam war protests, the protestors used to run down Telegraph Avenue to avoid the oncoming police. Today the place is far more peaceful but still interesting. A variety of street vendors set up on weekends. The shops also beckon you. You can walk up Telegraph to Sproul Plaza and almost here Mario Savio exhort students to support the Free Speech Movement, although almost 50 years have passed since those days. Telegraph Avenue is steeped in history -- and is also a great place to people watch.

Telegraph Avenue is always fun for the teens and tweens to walk around. Artisans selling their jewelry, tie dyed clothing and antiestablishment bumper stickers. But over the years, it's gotten almost impossible to walk down. There are so many homeless and drugged-out people just sitting on the street, asking for money that it's not pleasant to visit.

Many places around the world have a Telegraph Ave.......this one is reminiscent of a certain era, that's all.
