Owner description: Almost as if we haven't lost a moment of time... Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley is still so reminiscent of the 60's that you will feel as if you have traveled back in time when you visit Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. The shops and eateries are a mix of quintessential hippie-dom mixed with the current U.C. Berkeley modern day student. Both seem to blend together in a medley that makes shopping and eating here almost a cultural or historical trek as well as a great shopping one.

Go if you like grunge. Lots of restaurants to choose from. Sidewalk vendors with jewelry and other items for sale. Fun. When done with the Avenue, visit UC Berkeley's campus at the north end of Telegraph. It's historic and marvelous.

Since Cody's books closed there is only a couple of book stores left and alot of empty stores or chains. Not worth a special trip with the bad parking.

A couple people and a local tourist magazine said that you need to check out this area. I have no idea what the hype was all about. We saw a lot of college student walking around to a bunch of stores. If you want to walk and shop that might be an area to check out, but I didn't see any really unique shopping spots.

Iconoclastic Berkeley -- great hole-in-the-wall restaurants juxtaposed with chi-chi ones, pedestrian friendly, campus-close and chock full of Telegraph Avenue artists selling their wares (and sometimes wares from third-world countries) in a sort of mellow street market. Great fun to browse, wander and talk to some unusual folk.
