For a foodie capital, the immediate surroundings of Berkeley's UC campus have some pretty grungy blocks and restaurants that aren't that good. But as you head north to the Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck Avenue, one of the first signs of improvement and better food is the Turkish Kitchen. Unassuming as it looks, this is a very authentic Turkish restaurant. Get in the mood with the goofy hand-painted map of the Mediterranean spread across the ceiling, piped in Turkish TV, and pick some of the dishes you might not know from the display case and photo menu above. The friendly young staff will also help with suggestions. Doener, kebabs, lamb, hummus, you name it, they do it well and reasonably. Definitely worth a couple of visits.
