Upon arrival at Riu Montego Bay, we were greeted by a very friendly front desk receptionist and bell man. The Hotel was clean. Very clean indeed. The only thing I did not like about this first class resort was that they still use the old fashion key to get into the room. It was very difficult to get the room door opened. This was not an isolated problem. Many guests had the same experience.
Food was plentiful with a wide variety of selection in the buffet diner. Accommodation and entertainment were good. People working at the hotel did their best to make you feel welcomed. The beds were hard to sleep on and pillows were not very comfortable to lay your head on. Overall the experience was good. Riu really needs to address their "OLD" fashion door key policy and bedding.

Room Tip: Rooms in buildings five and six facing the sea is very relaxing. Ask for upstairs rooms in these buildings.

Time of experience: second half of February.
It is close to Montego Bay, planes roaring above your head all day long.
Resort is rather small and compact, if one likes walking..forget it. The beach is about 500 m long only, and only a few trees for shadow. Hard to find shadowy place on the beach, same more or less around the pool. People get at 6am to claim good spots, it is crazy. Beach chairs are dead beaten in a very bad shape.. More better quality deck chairs can be found around the pool area, but mattresses on them are dirty and made of sticky plastic. Ocean is very calm, no waves, feels like a lake. Water was rather murky within the allowable swimming area. Bottom full of sea grass and slimy. They allow glass bottles and glasses on the beach, it is very dangerous.
Room was very clean. Food was decent. Service at the bars and eateries very fast and friendly. Staff is very nice and friendly across the whole resort. They allow people to smoke and eat from plates at the pool bar, after 6 pm water there is more like a cesspool, plenty of spilled drinks and food floating occasionally. There are trips from the beach. $30 for snorkeling, but reef is nothing special. Activities are available, like in any other resort (volleyball, aerobic (on the beach, in the pool).
Shows very average. I expected to hear plenty of reggae live music, but this is not a case at this hotel.

Room Tip: Pay extra for the room with a ocean view !! It is a building where people are less noisy.

We stayed at Riu from Feb 17 through 24, 2014. There were close to 40 of us and we all had a great time. I was a bit hesitant from reading reviews, but must say that the only negative that I can remotely agree with is the quality of the water for swimming in Montego Bay.
Everything else about our stay was perfect. Rooms were clean, service was amazing from the servers, to room attendants, bartenders, Riu entertainment team. All very very friendly and helpful. The biggest plus was that the drinking water at this resort is okay to drink, so no worries here. The close proximity to the airport allowed us to start our vacation asap. The planes taking off evert half hour or so, were a pleasant distraction, not an annoyance. Luckily, no planes flew overhead during the wedding ceremony.
We enjoyed the Hobie Cat and kayak rentals and my hubby used them several times a day. Wear water shoes in the mucky water if it bothers you at all. Buffets had a good variety, we tried all three ala carts, and the Asian and Italian were just another buffet. Steakhouse was the site of the wedding reception which was served and enjoyed by all. Jerk Chicken shack was as everyone has mentioned the best of all!
This resort was 100% booked the entire time we were there and the staff accommodated us well. Setting us additional lunch buffets, bars, omelet stations to accommodate everyone without more than a three person wait. We had friends who saved lounges for us early in the morning and we shared them through out the day.
Smoking was a bit irritating, but they did not allow in dining rooms or in the entertainment theatre.
Variety of food, fr;uit and vegetables was appreciated. Try the Jack Fruit on the breakfast buffet as well as the daily porridge, our favorite!
Had an issue with my room safe and it was solved in 10 m inutes after the call. Typical of the service the entire week!
Loved this resort, Jamaica, and being in an English speaking country.

Room Tip: We always request a top floor room so we can enjoy the view. There are elevators in each building, but we enjopyed the exercise of climbing stairs to work off the food. Ocean view is great. Many friend had garden view and were bothered watching Jamaica children begging through the fence for money.

Beautiful resort! The staff were genuinely concerned about you having a good time. The place was very clean, the food was plentiful and the pools are great. The beach was small and underwater was slimy but you can wear water shoes.
I loved the layout of this place, they have all the action going on at one side of the resort and the rooms at the other. The pool and main buffet was central. The room was clean, and quiet.
You are right across the street from 2 shopping malls and the taxi's will take you for free if you don't want to walk.
The only drawback for this place was the planes flying overhead, but when you are 7 minutes from the airport, it's expected and we got used to it.

Room Tip: The rooms in the 5-6000 block are closest to the beach and furthest from the pool/buffet.

Just returned from a week's stay at Riu Montego Bay. Beautiful resort! Very clean-staff was constantly picking and cleaning up.We especially liked the close proximity of everything. The rooms were clean and very quiet-you did not hear any noises in the hallways. The food was plentiful, varied and delicious. We REALLY enjoyed the jerk chicken hut on the beach! The Asian and Italian restaurant are nothing special-similar food to the main dining hall, but the steakhouse was an enjoyable sit down meal.Yes, you are close to the airport and the planes are flying over, but it did not bother us one bit. The pools were fantastic-you do need to get up early to reserve a lounge chair by the pool because they are taken quickly. The staff was friendly and courteous. Entertainment was great-activities daily by the pool and we did frequent the evening shows several nights. They do limit free internet access to 90 min. a day and is restricted to the lobby area only. All in all, we had an excellent time and would recommend the Riu Montego Bay.
