I think next time I will try breakfast which is served until 4 pm. Everyone raves about the breakfast - but I had dinner with several folk.
Instead arriving at 3:59 just by chance we tried the dinner menu. THey had a lot of standard fare items and a couple of interesting ones.
The angel wings pork shanks are indeed tasty and worth it by themselves, however the remainder of the items on the plate are 3rd rate. They advertised wild rice, instead they served a glutinous glop of regular rice with a few grains of wild rice mixed in. I told them specifically I ordered the wild rice because I am gluten intolerant and they didn't seem to understand what they are serving or what gluten intolerant even is. Not a good state for a modern restaurateur to be in.
The mixed vegetables are a mix between steamed fried and braised - I am not sure what they were other than cooked a bit too much. THey also were unseasoned and un-sauced in all of this cooking. If you get the angel wings the sweet chili sauce on the side -- it is far too piquant to actually complement the pork shanks which are done just right. The sauce is simply hot and sweet and drowns out all the subtlety of the pork shanks.
The shrimp louis was asked for with large shrimp - instead it came with those pre-boiled pencil erasers called bay shrimp - and not even crisp.
The salmon was over cooked and had the same problem with the other items on the plate being lackluster
The quesadilla was totally unremarkable and you could have gotten the same results in your kitchen microwave -ie the tortilla wasn't even browned or crisped- it was the soggy kind you get from microwave quesadillas. Again the other items on the plate were lackluster - the small bowl of black beans could have come from a can.
It did have a decent outdoor seating on the shady side of the street- which is welcome in summer - but bring a sweater because when it cools down it really cools down -even mid summer. The outdoor seating is important for those of us traveling with dogs.
The staff is more than pleasant, and the inside decor is decent too.
I think this is probably a very good breakfast spot - so will review it again when i come back and try breakfast.
