Simple dining much like I remember in the 60's. No complaints here.

This small, funky restaurant is popular with locals and non locals alike. We regularly drive a half hour or so to get there. I don't think it seats more than 30 (they do have a small outside seating area. You get large portions of well-prepared food at very reasonable prices.
You would have to be a real trencherman to finish their chicken-fried steak and eggs. Their french toast is especially popular and they make a mean pancake! There are usually 6-8 daily specials. I possible had the best huevos rancheros with carnitas that I've ever had there. If you go on a weekend, go early or be prepared to wait for a bit--fortunately there is the Cloud 9 coffee shop across the street.

If you are in the Santa Cruz mountains, traveling Hwy 9 and would like a taste of true local color, stop by Spanky's in Ben Lomond.

What you'll find is a TRUE diner experience. There's a lunch counter, six or seven tables inside and three or four out back on the patio. The waitresses are likely to speak loudly to those who enter from the area that they know. They might even sit down at your table to take your order. Sometimes they have a bit of "attitude" that is in keeping with this mountain town.

You'll also find food that is made right there at the restaurant. Never canned. The soup is homemade, the gravy for biscuits and gravy (best in Santa Cruz county and I'm picky about such things) is homemade, even the hollandaise sauce for the eggs bene (only available on weekends) is homemade. The portions are HUGE. The coffee flows freely.

You'll be rubbing elbows with bikers, families and tourists. It's loud on weekends and the place is packed from about 9am until right before closing.

What you won't get is "fancy." Or fake. This is the real deal. A true locals spot that has been there for two decades and is known to everyone from the residents to celebs passing through the area.

If you plan on taking a large group on the weekends--more than four people--call ahead.

A comfortable, cozy neighborhood cafe for breakfast and lunch. Very nice patio dining, weather permitting. The food is very good, everything is fresh and the portions generous. This is easily the best restaurant in the area for breakfast and lunch. Parking is limited so you may have to walk a little way - it is worth it.
