We spent a long weekend relaxing at Ou Drif with 2 other couples. Bill and Jeanine are great hosts, the accommodation is comfortable and the food was fabulous. A great place for a weekend away. We went on 2 walks with Bill and enjoyed his stories about the numerous Bushman paintings we saw.

Our group of six friends spent three days at Oudrif. What a beautiful place! Oudrif is a long way from anywhere, about an hour's drive from Clanwilliam, nestled next to the Doring River.

The five straw bale chalets are very clean and comfortable, each has a solar panel charging a battery which powers the lights. Hot water is from a gas heater. The chalet consists of a sleeping area with queen size bed, lounging area with sofa and chair, spacious toilet, basin and shower, and a patio overlooking the river.

Drinks and meals are served from the communal dining area, which has a large dining table where guests and Bill and Jeanine dine. As the hosts are vegetarian there is always a large array of veggie dishes, such as tofu cooked in chilli batter, butternut with feta and nuts, as well as barbecued meat for dinner. The food is fantastic. Wine and beer are local brands and are quite adequate.

There are numerous activities consisting of river rafting, fishing for yellow fish and bass, stargazing, bird watching and walking with Bill. Bill is knowledgeable about the local environment and has his own theories about the many Bushman paintings in the area. A daily walk with Bill is a must.

Three days was too short although we recharged our batteries completely in this time. We will do the trip again in August when the river is in full force and the flowers are out.

A unique experience in an amazingly isolated location with a wonderful stark beauty. Chalet built out of hay bales and furnished beautifully inside. Wonderfully prepared food served around a shared table at night by friendly hosts. Out here you can really see the stars. This is a special place. We went there in late 2008 and would recommend a 4 wheel drive to get there though this may have changed.

Wow - what a wonderful experience. Accommodation is in 5 chalets built out of hay bales (even the roof) and the windows and doors are all unique, acquired second hand through scouring the newspaper advertisements, making each unit quite different from the next. The beds and furnishing are comfortable and simple and the whole lodge runs on solar energy and gas. Three beautifully prepared meals are included in the cost as well as all drinks. Bill & Janine are both vegetarians and we were amazed at the variety and number of dishes served up with the braai each night. They were wonderful hosts and If you enjoy walking, fishing, canoeing, birdwatching, stargazing, absolute silence and lively conversation with the other guests around the table for meals, don't pass up the opportunity of visiting this remote part of the world to experience how lightly some people tread on this earth. Really good value and superb standards.

Only several hours drive from Cape Town but this is a perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy the environment. Everything is friendly, unpretentious and comfortable from the quirky straw bale cottages, to the delicious informal banquets – you quickly adapt to the slower pace and enjoy soaking up the nature around you. Some guests went mountain biking, others took a picnic for a days hike or went out on the river, we decided to do more gentle walks to deserted beaches and bird watching by the river. Each night Bill and Jeanine presented us with fantastic and creative dishes of flavoursome food – like them I am a vegetarian and it was tables turned for once to not have to worry about being catered for! Highlight was Bill taking us to see the Rock Paintings close by and for my husband a hand reared Cape Weaver bird sitting on his shoulder – Jeanine is a committed and skilled animal rescuer – with many interesting tales. We can thoroughly recommend a stay here to re-charge your batteries.
