Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center
Ranked #20 of 63 Hotels in Bakersfield

We Stayed overnight at the Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center on the way to Disneyland. I was pleased with this Marriott property. It had a very convention center feel to it which is neutral to me. Nice lobby and very clean. Room was standard size and comfortable. Beds were comfortable and bathroom was clean and in good working order. Desk staff was excellent, friendly on check in and check out. Elevator required a key to operate and get to room floors, nice security feature in downtown Bakersfield. There was plenty of parking in the back, easy access to and from parking.
Be careful of the room service breakfast costs, better to go downstairs and eat in the dining area. In room breakfast cost over $55.00 for three people, money would have been better spent on a nicer dinner. The downstairs dining area is pleasing and off the spacious lobby so better to breakfast there.
Stayed on points, as usual very easy to book using Marriott points – they have few restrictions and blackouts and generally make it very easy to use their rewards.

Nothing special about the place, may be a tiny bit dated. Internet can be faster, but it is free. Parking is free right next to the hotel. Worth the money for sure. Will stay again! The elevator is via card access, so the care about security.

Bakersfield is the boyhood home of Earl Warren, the sometime courtroom venue of Earl Rogers, and the place where Buck Owens cut his courntry music onto 45s. As such, it deserves some respect. And, going north from LA or heading south from Sacramento, it's such a convenient place to stop for a few hours sleep before having to get on the road again heading up, or looking to get out of, California's great Central Valley. Still, during the summer it's the frying pan of 99. By the time you have to stop there, you're in need of an oasis to shelter in on those drives when it's going to still be 90 degrees plus (or feel like it) even thought it's midnight. That's the Marriott at the Convention Center. A resurrected Holiday Inn, the Marriott isn't the greatest hotel you've ever stayed in, but it's very likely the best between Visalia and Gorman, for the price. Very reasonable rates, at least during the summer, a good bed, a reasonably quiet room, pleasant desk service, and complimentary parking. For all that, you can forgive the color scheme, get a good night's sleep, and enjoy breakfast before you leave. Yes, you'll have to get back on the road by 8:30 or so if you don't want to bake before you get over the Grapevine (or up to Fresno), but that's not the hotel's fault. That's, well, that's Bakersfield.

Firstly, Bakersfield seems like an absolutely dire place… certainly not somewhere I'd recommend visiting unless you're going there for family or work reasons. We only stayed there for one quick overnight stop as we were touring California.

The hotel is a large downtown hotel, next to the convention centre, the railway tracks run at the back and its surrounded by civic buildings, in particular the courthouse. We drove to find a restaurant but couldn't find anything that we felt comfortable stopping at. And after taking a wrong turn it was only a couple of blocks and we were in what look like a rather sleazy area with bail bond shops, saunas, buildings surrounded with barbed wire. We didn’t feel comfortable and got back to the hotel as quickly as poss.

The hotel itself was clean and comfortable, with a large lobby, bar and restaurant. The rooms were well equipped and large, and everything was good but just not quite as plush as I'd expect a Marriott to be. It was one notch lower than other Marriott's I've stayed at.

The service was typically polite and efficient but scripted and impersonal. The bar staff were friendlier and the bar meal we had was good. There was a comprehensive breakfast but the service at breakfast was dreadful, the restaurant was half empty but we had to wait for a long time as they hadn't cleared any of the previously used tables and we had to ask more than once for crockery and cutlery. It wasn't busy but there were just too few staff to cope.

All in all we can't complain though… for us it was only an overnight pitstop, overall the hotel was fine and it was really cheap, our least expensive hotel stay anywhere on our tour of California.
