Okay, so we had to stay here for 1 night for a Baby Shower on Saturday Jan 4th. I used my husband's Marriott points to book a double room suite for myself and my elderly mother.
Then, the night before we left, I was asked by my sister and my daughter if they could tag along from San Diego. Since I had a double suite-two beds and an sofa bed, I figured we could squeeze them in as unexpected riders and guests in my room. I advised the hotel, and they said it was no problem.
We had never stayed at this location (there are two Marriott's on this street) since we had previously been guests at the Holiday Inn and the other Marriott.
DIRECTIONS: DONT GET LOST!
As I've previously posted in my review of Bakersfield hotels, this hotel is ALSO off of the 99 and "58". There are two "58's" so you have to be careful where you exit. This hotel area is WEST of the 99. It is near the Buck Owens area. If you miss the exit and are going east of the 58, you are heading to the Mojave desert, so get back on the 99 and head north for about 1 1/2 miles to the 58 west.
Marriott Drive is behind a large strip mall that has a Black Angus and other restaurants within walking distance. John's Incredible Pizza is a family friendly buffet style pizza place, with games and lots of birthday party activities, but it is HUGE and extremely busy! If you cross the street, you'll be at Costco and Costco gas. (If you drive further WEST ~2 miles, you will run into a variety of chain stores:Target, Walmart, etc. along this drive). So, this enclave of hotels places you very central to a lot of businesses and stores, but the noise isn't too much of a problem because the hotels are set back 1 block south of the 58.
Originally, I had planned on booking the Holiday Inn but the rates were higher at H-I for that weekend, so we used Marriott points to book this hotel. We arrived late for the 2:00 shower, but arrived too early for the hotel check in at 3:00. So, as we drove up at 2:30 to the hotel, I ran in and asked if I could check-in early. The clerk said, "no problem", quickly gave me 4 keys, and I ran out to the car to get to the shower. When we got back, two keys didn't work and we had to have them redone two times but they were very good about having a staff member come to the room immediately with two keys.
We returned about at 7:30, took our bags to the room and were pleasantly surprised.
It's a little cramped (remember double beds, not queens) but, they used up every inch of square footage. You enter into an "ante" room with a tiny sofabed that seats two people.
The room has: an armchair, a desk and deskchair, lamps, a minifridge and a mini-microwave. A combination radio/cd/alarm that kept waking us up because I couldn't figure out how to reprogram it. The lighting at the heads of the beds was phenomenal! A lamp and a separate spotlight above with gradual controls were good!
The only thing we had problems with in the room was the digital thermostat. We kept getting weird temps. The whole night, the room wanted to be at 77 degrees! Too darn warm! Never could figure it out.
The Bathroom and sink are in the midway, to the side of the room, and the two closets are set away from all of this area at the windows, but we liked it. It was different, and we had just enough room. Now for all you people that live in your room, the TV may seem inconvenient, because it is straddled, on top of the dresser-so that you can face the flatscreen toward the anteroom, or- turn it towards the beds. We turned it toward the front ante room and it worked for us. Seating for 4 was exactly that.
I didn't know that breakfast was included and covered everyone in the room. That was a nice surprise! We wanted to get a really early start to get through the grapevine and LA traffic, but breakfast started late on Sunday, at 7:00 am. I guess it usually starts at 6 am during the week. If you get to breakfast early you can find seating. Later on, as we were checking out, it was packed!
Buffet Breakfast includes juices, milk, water, coffees, teas, hot oatmeal, self-serve waffles, great quality bread (it has to be cut to fit in their bagel toasters), scrambled eggs, sausage patties, bagels, some fresh fruit (bananas), and typical carbs.
CHECK OUT-quick and painless.
I would have given this rating 5 stars, but the temperature control was just too much of a hassle and it was hard to sleep with warm air and 5 am alarm beeps! I think they should set the temp at 72-74 and undo the stupid alarms! ANd, All of us carry cell phones, so if your room key gets demagnitized, its a problem.
Have fun! We did!
