Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 12, 2010

This review is almost a year old, but based on most of the current reviews not much has changed except for the lobster charge. This was our first all inclusive so I was a little nervous about what to expect, especially in regards to food as I am rather picky. I was also worried my expectations would be too high based on all the rave reviews. Definitely not disappointed. We were so impressed with our stay from every aspect that we booked again for December of this year! This time we will stay a full week and probably not leave the resort so we can fully enjoy the Valentin. I highly recommend the couples massage on the beach, room service (wine and cheese platter and shrimp were great!) and bring at least $100 in ones and fives to tip. The staff work very hard and are always pleasant and cheerful and they are so appreciative when you thank them with a dollar or two.

We went here for our "babymoon" and found it very relaxing, romantic, and reasonably priced for all that we received. There were many restaurants to choose from, all delicious and able to accommodate our dietary restrictions (we don't eat meat or shellfish). We especially liked the Japanese restaurant- great service and very entertaining. We had a bit of trouble making reservations when the resort was crowded, but if you plan a few days in advance you should have no problem. The special themed nights were fun- we liked the flamenco music outdoors with a Mexican buffet. The pool activities were entertaining and not too intrusive. The beach was beautiful and open for swimming in the ocean, unlike the neighboring resort we stayed in for our honeymoon where the beach was lined with sandbags and the shores were extremely rocky.

We just returned from 4 nights at the Valentin, booked the trip through cheapcaribbean.com and it was our first time with Cheap Caribbean, first all inclusive, and first resort. We usually do cruises but wanted to try something different and are now huge fans of all inclusive resorts, especially the Valentin. Everything was way above our expectations, including Cheap Caribbean's arrangements and price. The resort is beautiful and impecably maintained, staff is well trained in providing exceptional service, food was 5-star and we had the most relaxing vacation ever. We will return and we will use CheapCaribbean.com again.

Very comprehensive all-inclusive resort. Staff is extremely accommodating. Highly recommend the breakfast buffet at Le Marche and the Mexican restaurant. Wide range of activities are available, including water sports as well as table tennis, biking, beach/pool volleyball, billiard, and Spanish lessons. Nightly entertainment include live music and karaoke!

On the down side, room service is not too impressive, and the tipping seems to be expected everywhere.

We returned to the Valentin for a second time last week. We were greeted again by friendly faces, cold towels and champange. We were checked-in in less than 15 minutes and then we were off to the lunch buffet that was awesome as usual. Last year we stayed in the Golden Jr. Suite and we thought that was a great room until they upgraded us this time to the Emerald Jr. Suite. This was the nicest hotel room I have ever seen in my life and we have been to a few really nice places. The water was beautiful, the grounds were manicured as usual and the staff was wonderful with every little need we had. We also were given $400 in Spa Credits so my husband recieved an hour long swedish massage and I got an 80 minute hot stone massage and a manicure. It was heaven! The food was wonderful!! My one and only complaint was when we went to the Indonesian Resturant we were there for at least 2 1/2 hours and they were not that busy. However the food was wonderful but the wait was terrible. I would recommend this hotel to anyone!!!!

Purpose of Trip - 1st Mommy and Daddy vacation after child turned 1 !!!
Age group - 30 - 45

First, you are in Mexico. Some things during your stay will break, some things will not work correctly, some foods will not taste the same. You should except this going in.

I am sure there are better resorts some where in the world, but I seriously doubt that there are any significantly better in this price range.

I agree with most of the reviews previously posted.

Clientle - We came here on our honeymoon two years ago. At that time clientle seemed to be a 50/50 split : US/ Euro, age 35 - 50, married. This year the cliente was mostly US, second large group appeared to be Canadian, 3rd European (mostly German, few Italian), very few Mexican. The age group seemed a little younger: 25 - 35 mostly, then maybe 55 - 65. The 35 - 50 age group was not as prevalent. The majority of people were married.

Dress Code: Two years ago if the men did not wear long pants they were not allowed in the restaraunts. This was actually nice and forced you to dress a little. Made the atmosphere seem more upscale. This year there was only a dress code at the French. Otherwise, you saw T-Shirts (all types), shorts (all types), jeans, and more or less whatever. This really changed the feel of the place.

There are at least two beaches.
As stated, the main beach is unfortunately located on a reef. This seems to bother some people. If walk a few hundred yards due East you have a wonderful swimming area. This main beach area is more lively as most people are swimming, beach volleyball, Hobi Cats, etc. Also, this area is mostly fully clothed. The bar staff waited on us constantly and only 1 day did we have issues geeting continuous drinks.

The second beach is located behind building 12. It is like a small cove. Too rocky to swim. It is just for sunning. It also has a bar. This area is totally quiet. Most people sun bathe topless here. It is respectful and very quiet. Security is present.

What I miss in other reviews:
Main beach - Palapas are fully taken from 7:00 am - 1:00 pm. However, after 1:00 pm, the beach becomes almost deserted. We went to beach at 1:00 every day and never had any issue getting shade.

Quiet beach - always Palapas available. This beach was never crowded.

Pools:
Main pool is huge. For any resort that serves this number of people, the ppol is simply awesome. Yes, you can find a few tiles missing, but holy crap, this pool is the size of super Walmart. Give me a break. This is a non issue.

Quiet pool. Terrific. Very few people used these during our 7 day stay. I recommend that you go there in the morning, then go to beach after lunch.

Food - As a general word of advise - if you are expecting food to taste the same as your local restaraunt, you will be disappointed. When you go to the restaraunts, remember that it is an all-inclusive resort, just try things. It was all good. Somethings were simply outstanding and somethings just OK. However, it was all very good, very plentiful, and good service.

Bars - There were several scattered throughout the resort. Drinks were OK. Sometimes they seemed to be great, other times just OK. Our attitude was to try one of everything. Some I liked, some I didn't. I do think the alcohol is not as strong. I drank constantly and never became drunk. Normally three or four beers and I am toast. Not here. Yes they had name brands and a few high end types, and yes they poured them in front of me. Tasted like the real deal. They put a lot in there, but we just did not get drunk. I didn't see anyone at the resort overly intoxicated. We certainly tried our best.

Rooms - Great. One sink was slow draining, so we simply used the other one. Your room should have two anyway. The Golden Swim up was very large and very nice. Building 8, room 8108. Jacuzzi was huge, shower was tremendous, bed great. Yes, there are three channels of adult programming (porn), the last three. You have 44 other channels if you do not like it. Most people we met really did appreciate it and actually looked forward to turning in early to watch a little TV :) Hey, It is a couples resort.

Our friends came with us. They stayed in Emerald Suite building 12. Here was a difference. Although ocean front, the Emerald Suites are set far back from the ocean. Our friends had a good ocean view, but they were on second floor next to the beach access Any room on 1st floor would not see ocean due to sand dunes and trees/ plants. It was a crap shoot seeing through the trees on the second floor, but they lucked out. The suite was half to a third smaller than ours. However, they had a jacuzzi that could accomodate a small group. The novelty was that it was surrounded by 2 way mirrors on three sides of the room, so it overlooked beach area.

Other than that -
Grounds are gorgeous.
I only saw one pool float the entire 7 days. If it is important to you, bring one.
The chairs/ recliners were OK shape. Found one or two that were broken, but the other 75 I tried were in good shape.
Room service was really quick - average 20 - 30 minutes.
Safe in the room was good size.
Seating for dinner was never a problem.
Shows started mostly on time, but the start times differed by the day.
They did not do a good job cleaning the room one day, but did very well the others.
All staff we met were super friendly, very professional, and extremely helpful.
The place is so big. Be prepared for a lot of walking. Seriously, it was nice to walk, but it is a lot of walking.
The Michael jackson show was actually very good, not world class, but enjoyable. That was the only one we saw.
Massage on beach was nice.

Really I only have one negative -
The resort night life revolves around the central plaza. It is open air, nice size, and very relaxing. They had a house band there most nights from 8 - 10 that was really enjoyable. However, at 10:00, they abruptly stopped and that was it.

Otherwise - We whole heartedly recommend this resort for honeymooners and those couples wishing to relax. It is quiet and peaceful.
