My Husand and I traveled to the Valentin June 8-15 for our Honeymoon and I have to say it was everything we expected and more. I have no idea how people can say anything bad about this resort. We arrived around 9:00a.m. at the resort and check in was super easy and fast. Because we were on our honeymoon they upgraded our room to a swim up sweet for free. It was so worth the upgrade we stayed in building 7 which was very nice and close to everything. Not only did we have a pool out our back patio, but the bar was right there also. Just can't go wrong with that. The room had tons of space and the bed was so comfortablt. It was a little humid in the room, but what do you expect when your on the ocean. The weather was awsome and very hot.

The food was top notch along with the alcohol. The Riveria Maya was my faviorte drink, try it if you like fruity drinks. We loved the breakfast buffet there is everything you can imagine for breakfast. We liked all the resturaunts and the dress code was no problems at all. We were even able to watch the Red Wings in the play offs which was awsome. The entertainment at night was fun. A live band under the stars was very romantic. We went to the Michael Jackson show and it was amazing. It was almost scary how much the guy resembled Michael.

The ocean was gorgious and warm. You were able to swim in the ocean however it was rough. I found that to be fun, but you did get tired quickly. We didn't find it to be very rocky either like other reviews say it is. We never had a problem finding shade or getting a drink. They wait on you hand and foot. We did tip about $1.00 to everyone for serving us drinks. We tipped $2.00 to our maid everyday also. Please tip these people work so hard an they are so nice.

I could go on an on about this resort. We loved it so much we are considering going back in January. It was everything we wanted for our honeymoon, romantic, relaxing and fun.

I think reading about 200 reviews before my trip to the Valentin was a mistake. I expected perfection and as a result I was disappointed. My husband and I have stayed at the Riu Palace & Secrets Capri (both in the Riviera Maya) and recieved better service. The check in process was easy but we did have to wait 4 hours for our room. The food was exceptional in every restaurant; we made it every one of them except for the Indonesian. Ginger was the best and the Italian was our least favorite. We had a golden swim up suite in bldg 6, which was a great location. The pools were excellent. The problem we had was that one hand didn't know what the other hand was doing. We were told that we could request a time when the room would be cleaned ~ which didn't matter because they didn't show up until after 4:30 every day. The alcohol isn't as premium as they make it sound. My husband only drinks grey goose or absolute vodka; the resort only offered stolys or smirnoff. He was told he didn't pay for the "premium bar" in his package. We were surprised by this because at the other resorts I mentioned you literally got anything you asked for. The resort didn't offer turn down service at night nor did they do anykind of towel art unless you bought a honeymoon package. I know these issues may seem small and sound petty but when you receive certain services from other top rated resorts you expect them to be standard issue. One negative thing about the hotel was that the air would only go down to 65 degrees, which was comfortable, but everything smelled musty. You would swear the sheets were wet every night when you got into bed. If you wanted room service, that was an event all by itself. It took us two hours just to get coffee.
Overall it was a beautiful vacation and the resort was beautiul. But in comparison, I think we would go back to Secrets next time.

Just returned from Valentin and wanted to give a full review of the hotel. First of all it is very close to the Cancun airport , about 25 min ride.
Grounds are beautiful, clean....

Check in was easy, always ask for an upgrade ;)

Rooms: Our room was on the 3 floor in building 4, facing the pool and with ocean views.. Nice room , bright, everything you would need. Shower door is very poorly constructed, so when you take a shower, water drips on the floor.....not a big deal...

Beach: When you first come to the beach it is rocky , but all you have to do is to go left and you will have beautiful clear blue water.

Quality of the sand was ok.... Seen much better

Pool was great......
Resaturants are all have different plusses and minuses, but overall nice food.
Service was good, sometimes great...
Overall very relaxing place, nobody will bother you with the activities, but there is plenty to do...

Just returned from Valentin Imperial Maya. Stayed 5 days. Trip advisor reviews helped me immensely in making my decision so I wanted to return the favor.
I Started by re-reading some of the negative reviews to see what I was missing given I had a delightful stay. After having stayed there can see how some of these things described can occur even though I managed to avoid them.

My observations on the mixed reviews are as follows:

FOOD:
DINNER: Some complained about the food, with the Asian & Italian restaurants being mentioned. Didn't eat there, don't know, could be right. Too busy digging the Steak and Lobster every night which was very good. If straight up seafood is more your thing they lay out salmon steaks and flounder fillets which you pick out, hand to them and watch em cook. Personally left Dinner satisfied every night.
LUNCH: O.K. the Lunch menu is only a left and right page, but for those of you who have been around a bit you know it's never a ten page new jersey diner menu. The menu included a choice of two soups which were always delicious. A Nacho appetizer that was mmmm good, a shrimp dish that was really tasty, and an attempt at an American style cheeseburger that they frankly managed to pull off. Lunch never let me down.
BREAKFAST:Breakfast buffet at La Marche was real good and included a chef cooking omelets to order. I love my breakfasts and can tell you you'll be properly fed.
Bottom line: if you stick to the foods you like you'll like them here. I myself left there saying that overall I was very pleased with the food.

'Free" Internet:
Yes it's true, but you must pay $10.00 for a cable to use it. Not the end of the world, but I have five of them sitting in a box at home. Wish I picked up on that somewhere in a review and therefore really wanted to pass this on. Ive since located a review that spoke of the hotel "running out" of cables at one point and therefore not able to offer internet at all to some people. I would have been mighty mad myself. Not a issue I encountered but one that everyone should be aware of.

STAFF:
General Staff: Bellmen, Bartenders, Waiters, Housekeeping, Activity Directors etc. - Fantastic!!!!!
Reception: Fine, putting in there 8 hours.
Concierges: Out to lunch!
Room Service: don't know, didn't use it.
Wake up call: Be Careful, one day got me, one day forgot me!!
All inquiries and communication by Room phone were mediocre at best.
Bottom Line: general staff were awesome, front office was asleep.
Fortunately general staff is 95% of your interaction and why I felt a had a great stay in spite of lost wake up calls or lazily answered inquiries by the front desk.

Grounds & pools: Beautiful!!!!!
Beach: Nice!
Water: A bit rough & rocky
Roped off areas with no rocks for safe swimming a little ways down the beach

Liquor: Top Self, all the major brands
Service: Made to your liking. They don't skimp on the liquor here.
Ask and you shall receive.

Rooms: Stayed in the Golden Jr. Suite on the 3rd floor. Building 7, room 7308 overlooking the pool with balcony. Beautiful!

Atmosphere:
Relaxed: For those of you who love to party till dawn, not your kind of place.
But for those of us who enjoy eating, drinking & dancing to a live band til 1AM but then hearing a pin drop for the rest of the night while we sleep, it's paradise.

Guests: Great looking group of twenty something through seventy something couples for the most part just looking to get away and be left alone. Encountered some really nice people.

OVERALL: This is a really nice Hotel with good food & drink, beautiful grounds and pools, and a quite relaxing atmosphere for those who want somewhere to chill and be left alone.

We just got home yesterday from our seven day vacation . Arrival in Cancun wasn't pleasant due to too many planes and not enough customs agents...we were in the airport 2 hours...we've been 6 times and this has never happened...so we didn't get to Valentin before dark...
Greeted by bellman...he got us cold towels and a cold drink....the check in was so pleasant with Fernando......went to our golden suite and it was amazing....only complaint....air didn't work very well and the outside lights on the building didn't work for two days (hard to see room number in dark..) but there were only 4 rooms occupied in our building (Bldg 8) a few more rooms were occupied by the end of the week and outside lights came on...this helped at night.
A better map of property would be helpful...we stumbled around for a day and finally found our way around....we helped wandering guests too...mainly americans since some countries still ban their citizens from flying to mexico.
Rooms: amazing and always cleaned immaculate everyday........4 out 7 nights we had turn down service.....plenty of towels, great soaps and we have never stayed in a well built and decorated room (we stayed a royale, paridisus, etc.)
Service: thanks to ramon....he was a busy guy since he had to cover all the pools in our area due to small occupancy in our areas....everyone wanted to always help us...
Pool: we love the quietness of our pool....other activities were at the main pool which included a swim up bar.....all the towels were over there.....this was a pain since you were given two towel cards and if you lost them..at check out there is a big fee.....so we just used room towels since the walk for towels took about 5 minutes...and only one room key per room which had a fee is you lost it.....two keys would be nice...since sometimes we needed to be in two places at once.
Food:; it was good...we had breakfast room service almost everyday...this was wonderful..we liked the Lobster Pot, Japanese restaurant and French were OK.....service was good but slow...plan on a meal taking about 1 1/2 hours....special theme buffets were nice at night....just didn't have time to visit other restaurants
Entertainment: loved the Valentin Band in the Plaza each night...we liked the entertainment like circus night, michael jackson, etc....these entertainers work very hard and we looked forward to it each night.
overall this is an amazing resort five star.....quite large so plan on walking alot.....we probably lost weight from all the walking but an occassional shuttle was nice. don't let anyone discourage you from going to these resorts......we will be back

I just got back from a 7 day/6 night stay with my partner at the VIM and had an awesome time. There were a few minor issues, but nothing that was a big deal.

CHECK-IN: It was fast and easy. We arrived a bit early (around 11am) and were told our room wouldn't be ready until around 2:30. They held onto our bags and we were able to grab lunch and a few drinks at the bar while we were waiting. If you know you are going to arrive early, it might be wise to have a bathing suit to change into. We just didn't want to go digging through our luggage for ours.

ROOM: Upon check-in we were upgraded from the delux jr. suite (entry level) to an emerald suite (2nd best level room at the hotel) with a hot tub and rain shower. However, it was in building 10 which was at the FAR corner of the resort so it was somewhat of a hike to just about everything. They called it beachfront, but it mostly looked out into jungle since we were on the first floor. There was no clock/ipod dock in the room, but we were on vacation so didn't really care. I'm sure they would have brought one had we called to complain. The bed was comfortable and there was a flat panel TV with a number of english speaking channels. There are also 2 porn stations, so be prepared. There were a couple of "visitors" we had in the room: a lizard on the headboard and a little crab in the hot tub. The AC worked but the room rarely got very cool despite putting the AC down to 65. It was comfortable enough to sleep though. The room was cleaned regularly. If you want them to clean it at a specific time, you can call and arrange for that. Turn down service at night was also provided which was a nice touch. The mini-bar was a small refrigerator which had Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Orange Soda, Water, Dos Equis and Tecate Light beer. We left a note in basic spanish with a few bucks requesting only the water, diet coke and beer which we received the rest of the week. Since there's not much room in the fridge, it is the best way to maximize the space. There is a jack for an internet line, but no USB cord, so if you're brining your computer, bring your own cord. They will rent one to you if you forget, but why waste the cash. The internet is free which is a nice change from most hotels.

GROUNDS: Absolutely gorgeous. The landscaping was immaculate and well kept. They had fake rocks along the pathways that played soft music. The main pool was great. The temperature was perfect. It was definitely lively be the pool bar, but if you wanted more quiet time, you could go to the other side of the pool. The pool for the swim up rooms was absolutely dead so that's another option as well. We never really had a problem getting a float to relax on or a chair by the pool. The swim up bar did get a little crowded, but if it was too busy, you could always get out and get a drink from the walk up bar on the other side. Not a big deal.

BEACH: Very scenic, but a very rock once you got down by the water. Also a bit windy. The red flag was out pretty much our entire stay so we spent most of our time up by the pool. If you wanted to grab a palapa, there was always one available. They also had coolers with water and beer by the entrance to the beach that you could grab if you wanted. A bar was also set up if you wanted a cocktail.

FOOD: I'm a good cook and have a lot of great restaurants around me at home so have pretty high standards. The food was definitely above average, but not spectacular. Breakfast buffet was great. Just about anything you could think of was set out or could be prepared on request. Lunch buffet up by the beach and Le Marche a la carte menu was just OK. Dinners ranged from good to very good. The French and Indonesian restaurants were our favorites. Japanese was just OK. Italian not very good at all (We have some of the best Italian food around me at home in Jersey so am somewhat biased on this one). Never made it to the seafood or steakhouse. PLEASE NOTE: The portions are relatively small. I actually liked it because you could get an appetizer, salad and/or soup and an entree without feeling like you're going to explode when you walk out. Some people were a little turned off by this though. You could also always order room service which was nice, but I found the food was sub par (salmon and steak were both WAY over-cooked, Kobe burger definitely wasn't Kobe beef, etc.)

ENTERTAINMENT/BARS: Michael Jackson show was awesome. Definitely a must see. We saw the first show after his death which made it that much more impactful. Fire show was pretty cool. The rest was only mildly entertaining. The courtyard at night had a really nice atmosphere. They had a bar set up and a live band playing most of the time. If you got too warm you could go to the Sports Bar which had really good AC. The bars shut down by 11 with the exception of the Sports Bar (closed at 2am), so if you wanted a late night, this was the place to be. The pool bar closed pretty early (around 5 or 6 I think).

CHECKOUT/DEPARTURE: This was a bit of a harrowing process. We asked at the front desk how far ahead we should call to get our bags picked up and they said half an hour. Just in case we ended up calling an hour ahead and sat there waiting (keep in mind we were extremely far from the front desk area). 40 minutes later we were still waiting and decided to just walk over since we were getting picked up in 20 minutes to go to the airport. Once we actually made it to the front desk, checkout was quick and easy and we just made our ride. Ride to the airport was only about 30 minutes and security at the airport was relatively fast. If you like to drink, save some room in your carry on to pick up a couple of bottles at the duty free shop. Prices are great. The allow 2 bottles max per person.

OVERALL: This is a great hotel with a few minor issues. We met some great people during our stay and would definitely return again. There's absolutely no need to worry about the swine flu so take advantage of the great rates while they're still being offered!!!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2009

We stayed at the Valentin June 12-17th. I will start of by saying that our trip got off to a very rocky start. Due to terrible thunderstorms in Dallas, our flights were cancelled three times on the day we were supposed to leave, and we didn't end up leaving until the following morning. Our travel agent contacted the Valentin to keep them informed of our situation, and they were nice enough to extend our stay an extra day so that we would get all the days of our vacation (since we were actually arriving a day late). They did this without hesitation or any additional fees. This was our first sign of how wonderful the service at this resort actually is.

Check in was a breeze. We were greeted with cool clothes and champagne. I had already emailed and asked for an upper floor in building 5, and that is exactly what we were given. Even though we arrived around 1:00, our room was already ready for us (probably due to low occupancy- about 35-40% when we were there). We were given a tour of the grounds and then taken to our room.

We had a deluxe jr. suite, and it was amazing! The beds were the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in on vacation. The bed was decorated with towel art and roses upon our arrival. Each day maid service was outstanding, and we received turndown service each night when we were gone to dinner. A Valentin Journal of the next day's events and chocolates were left on the bed as well.

Our mini bar was well stocked each day, and a note left on the fridge with our requests for drinks were always accomodated. We did tip the maid a few dollars each day, and left a couple of dollars on the mini fridge when we had a specific request. But, I can honestly say that even without the tips I believe we would have received the same service.

The main pool is wonderful! It is the largest pool I have seen at any resort. It has a beautiful waterfall and swim up bar. There ar floats in the water to use, and so many chairs with or without shade. It is hard to explain how beautiful the area actually is. Of course we stayed during a low occupancy due to the Swine Flu scare, but we never had to worry about getting a good spot. The drink service around the pool was wonderul!

We thought the beach was goregeous. There was a good area roped off for swimming, and a rockier area to the right that probably wasn't very swimmable. The were palapalas and chairs to use, and we never had to worry about getting a good spot. We always had a shady area each day. There is also beach service for drinks here too. What a nice touch! We honestly felt pampered all week long. The last couple of days we were there the weather was very windy and it rained on and off. It didn't ruin any of our days, but the red flags were out on the beach due to the waves, and not many people were in the water. On these days we spent most of our time at the pool.

The food we thought was top notch. We at breakfast at Le Marche which was wonderful. They had just about everything you could want on their breakfast buffet with made to order omlets, crepes, etc. Everything was so fresh, and they only put out small portions at a time, so the buffet was constantly being restocked. It made us feel good that the food never sat out for very long at all. We at lunch each day at the restaurant down by the pool/beach mostly for convenience. It was also buffet, but it had cooking stations with made to order fresh fish/seafood, burgers, etc.. The salads and desserts were wonderful, and I even heard that the resorts makes their icecream right there on site. It was spectacular. In the evenings we had fun dressing up a bit and enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurants. We ate at the Italian, the Mexican, the Asian, the Steakhouse, and we did the buffet at the Carribean night. We did not get a chance to eat at the French or Indonesian but I did hear that they were both wonderful. We never had a bad meal, and I enjoyed both the red and white hosue wines.

I did have a spa credit and used it toward a relaxing massage. It was heaven. The spa is very nice with sauna, steam room, showers, etc. The massage was excellent and totally relaxing. I even went to the salon to get my polish changed on my toes one day. I had already had a pedicure at home, but my polish was chipping. They did an excellent job of a polish change which lasted well past when we got home for only $8.00!

One downfall was that in the middle of the night one night I did get sick. I was very sick for about 12 hours one day with severe stomach discomfort which required several trips to the bathroom. This pretty much kept me in my room all day one day which was truly disappointing. I do not believe this had anything to do with the food or water I drank at the resort, but it is just one of those things that can sometimes happen when traveling outside of the country. I wish I would have come prepared with prescription medication from my dr. becasue I hated losing most of a day worth of our great vacation.

The resort was so wonderful we never left even one time for any excursions. We are already dreaming of going back, and hope we will be able to afford it. With such great reviews I can't imagine that prices will stay as they have been. If you get a chance, I suggested going soon!
