“Fantastic Trip!”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

My husband and I along with another couple just returned from this wonderful resort. Prior to leaving we reviewed trip advisor on this resort and there were plenty of positive reviews. However there were negative reports as well. I honestly can't understand what there was to complain about! Everything was top notch. Our weather wasn't the greatest but that can't be controlled and nor did we let it control our fun! The staff are very friendly whether you are tipping them or not! The Buffetts for Breakfast and Lunch had great selections to fit any taste. The Restaurants were all beautifully decortated and the food presentation five star. We may not have liked the food at the Italian but that was our taste and certainly no fault of the restaurant or resort! We upgraded to a swim up for five nights and that made our experience even more enjoyable! We highly recommend it!

For those you have this resort booked for the future, have a great holiday! You won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: Bldgs 6,7,8 on the first floor are swim up rooms!

Feb. 25 to Mar. 4th

Golden Junior Suite (Building 7, the "Don Miguel" on the 3rd floor)

Traveled as a couple (both 50 years old looking more for relaxation than a party atmosphere).
We arrived early (around 10 a.m.) and were prepared to use the hospitality room and enjoy the resort until our room was ready, but happily when asked if an early check-in was available for our chosen room, it was. We soaked up the beautifully designed main lobby building barely getting our bearings, when our porter arrived to transport us to our room. He was friendly and gave us a layout of the place on our way.

The grounds are stunning and well-tended. The resort is 85 acres and the design and landscaping, with lush vegetation everywhere, a canal system, as well as a small lake, is such that you never feel like there are 1,000 other people on the property.

We were quite pleased with our room. It was cool, with a ceiling fan going and air conditioning at a comfortable level. The room is spacious with a large washroom area dividing by a double jacuzzi with privacy doors to the bedroom. The bed was comfortable enough - a bit hard for me, but my husband was very comfortable. I found the pillows small and flat for a king size bed. An upgrade on pillow quality and more then just three tiny pillows for a king would be recommended. Nice seating area in front ot the sliding doors to the balcony with a comfy loveseat.

The view from our room was lovely. Building 7 is pretty much in the middle of the resort with a view from the third floor of the pool, tropical gardens, the lake and further out, the ocean can be seen a bit through the vegetation and ocean front buildings. It's quiet, a perfect location to everything and building 7 happens to have concierge as well, which is a nice touch.

The Restaurants:

We had breakfast and lunch at Le Marché every day, except one. Compared to comparably priced places, we found the buffet selection very good. There was variety, the food was quality and fresh. We liked the ambiance, choosing a deck table overlooking the water, when they were available. The management and staff of Le Marché are great. Friendly, prompt, professional service every time we ate there.

Our favourite experience was at Ginger, where we booked a Teppanyaki table. Our chef put on a great show, making our party of 8 spanning from one coast of North America to another laugh and enjoy a great meal. We loved it. The food was fresh. The sorbet dessert was my favourite dessert of any that I tried.

We also ate at the Indonesian, Italian, French, Mexican and Steak House. All were good the first go 'round. We didn't try the Seafood or Lobster Pot and opted for a second meal at the French restaurant for our last meal. We weren't as pleased the second time. A bit of inconsistency there. We loved the Mexican and filled up there. The service was great and friendly. We had fun there.

Bars:

We enjoyed the Sushi Bar in the Don Miguel lounge as a relaxing a pre-dinner appetizer hang-out.

The bar at the end of the Main Lobby was also a favourite lounging place for us, choosing two seats along the fountain concourse or overlooking the tropical garden fountain pool. We enjoyed most the great cappuccinos they make there as well as Spanish coffees - the best coffee on the resort, by the way.

The drink mixing can be a bit inconsistent from one bar to the next. Nothing to quibble about though. The lobby bar and the beach bar are the best and most consistent. The Plaza bar, open in the evenings for the shows was hit or miss. The "Sun" bar near our building closed early and was not fully stocked. The main pool bar, "Heaven" was good. Fast and pleasant service for a pool bar. Never too busy. Nice choice of premium liquors and liquers at all bars.
My favourite bar was "Sunrise" right on the beach. The swings are a great touch. Also like the hammocks in the trees by the boardwalk to the beach.

The house wine, which we had with most of our dinners is a decent Chilean wine - much better than at many places for a house wine (in some places undrinkable).

My favourite cocktail: The Roadrunner
Husband's favourite: The Superman

Beach:

The beach is gorgeous. A long stretch of white sand and blue sea. There is some wind which makes for a bit of wave, which we enjoyed. Nothing more relaxing then listening to the waves, which we could hear from our balcony as well. I miss it already. Crystal clear water, which was warmer than the swimming pools, white clean sand and I had a a bunch of shimmering white fish around me at one time. So nice. Loungers are plentiful, but they fill up quickly. You have to get there early.

Pools:

The main pool was beautifully designed, packed with loungers always full to capacity, but never felt over-run with people. Nice to have the activity section divided up by a waterfall and greenery.

The Lazy River pool was the place to be for total relaxation.

Ambiance:

Mix of younger twenty to thirty-something couples, honeymooners, middle-aged relaxation vacationers and a few retirees. Seems to be half and half Canadian and American with a fair amount of French Canadians. Obnoxious 'drunken parties' non-existent at this resort. The Sports Bar could get a bit roudy at night, if you want a party time on the tamer side. We passed that by. The resort's house band was a hoot. They are good musicians and played a mix of dance and rock and roll in the open air plaza most nights.

Maid Service: Average. One night out 7 we didn't get a full clean, just the turndown at night.

Spa:

I took the 15 minute complimentary foot massage that came with my package deal, on my last day. The spa is excellent. I would highly recommend it if you want to pamper yourself. Prices are comparable to other medium to higher end spas. Service is impeccable. If I had known how good it is, I would have used more of this service.

Concierge:

Hugo our building concierge was excellent. We really appreciated his professional service. We had a toilet issue on the first day and there was someone at our door to look after it a scant second after we hung up the phone. Then we had an issue with our jacuzzi jets starting and once again, a maintenance man was there in a few minutes, politely and efficiently solving the problem, so we could enjoy our jacuzzi.

On our departure, he gave us a warm send-off, which we appreciated.

Tips, if you go:

You can book a seat on the van excursion from the hotel to Playa del Carmen for $18US per person. You will be packed into a van until full to capacity and stick to the prescribed scheduled return time. If you feel more secure this way, it's fine. We did this on our first visit to Riviera Maya. However, you can also ask for a private taxi. The taxi is $30 per couple, if you go with another couple. We shared a taxi with a couple from the U.S. and liked a cleaner, newer car ride, not being crammed in a van and also choosing our own return time.

7:30 to 8:30 is busiest in the a la cartes. We didn't mind getting a beeper a couple of nights and lounging until our table was ready. It only took us a day or so to get on "Mexican time" :) But, if you don't want to eat too late, be there earlier to put your name in at least.
Don't leave ANY food, even sugar packs, open in your room. It's a tropical climate and will attract bugs. We put our food and dirty dishes outside the door for pick-up when we were done with it.

The room coffee pouches are weak.

While you are at the resort, check out the lake. It is well worth it, if you love the beauty of nature. Walk a few steps off the beaten track around the lazy river pool, step through the trees and you will see families of tropical birds.

Enjoy. We love Mexico. We would recommend this resort as value for money to comparable resorts.

Room Tip: Building 7 is perfectly located. Golden Junior Suites have a great view.

Second time we visited this resort, this year we paid more, and we asked if we could have the same room as last year as it had a nice view of the ocean, that room was taken, but the one next to it was available the next day and we could move for an extra $200, Umm, we did, and it may have been pricy, but we ate breakfast everyday on the balcony and watched the Hugh Cruse ships float by, building 2, room 304 by the way. The room service was very timely, you order breakfast for 6:30 and you could set you watch by their arrivial, hot food was hot and cold was cold.
The shower drain was plugged, so we called, and the maintenance came within minutes, unplugged the drain and cleaned up. The bed was made and room cleaned everyday, the maid turned down our bed, and at times left some sweets, nice touch, mind you we Tip, even the Plummer, only a buck, but they are always greatful.
Drinks were good, mind you the smaller, quieter, Silver Pool played second fiddle to the crowed Main Pool, that lonely Pool Server was run off her feet, I usually walked to the bar and ordered every 2nd or 3rd drink myself.
The Floats remain a problem, the staff are constantly pulling the floats from under the lounge chairs as guests treat them like they OWN them, it is well posted the floats are to remain in the pool, but it would appear some ignore this rule. We bring our own blow up floats, the staff will blow them up for you. There was an ugly incident at the Silver Pool when some young girls came from the Main pool and fished the floats out to take them back to the main pool, an elderly gentleman asked them to leave the floats in the pool for our use, there was only 4 floats in the Silver Pool, they had an ugly verbal exchange, the girls scooped up the floats hurled a few insults and made their way back to the main pool. I ventured over to the main pool and counted 42 floats stuffed under lounge chairs not being used, I guess it's safer to pick on the elderly then some young tuff guy with a Floaty. Valentin, you should address this before they pick on the wrong Senior.
The Mexician Night was fun, food was good, entertainment was Great, the Vino Tinto flowed, the only problem, again, were the people who sat at the tables, finished their meals and stayed seated all nigh while everyone else was forced to stand and eat, or eat off their laps, I didn't check but I suspect they had Floats stuffed under their chairs, come on people stop being so selfish.
And speaking of selfish people, I wittnessed on several occasions guests coming into the restaurant by the ocean using the enterance by the bathrooms, bypassing the line up and seating themselves, I guess they couldn't be bothered standing in the line up like the rest of the Guests, enduring the Floaty separation angzity, probably too much for them to do the proper thing, best to jump the line and hurry back before some old folks steal your Floaty.
Lets see, the Pellet Shooting was fun, we did it everyday at 11AM, and the Spanish Lessons were also fun, as were the Bike Tours, you meet sober folks at these events, mainly because they are help in the AM.
All in All we had a wonderful time, managed to meet some great people, exchange life stories, I read a few books, was never hungary, and drank plenty of Vino Tinto and coffee. We took a cab into town, $30 each way, plus a tip, ate dinner and wondered around.
I tip everyone, even the guiy who unplugged the shower drain, the maid, the seater, the waitresses, I get a bunch of $1 bills before we leave and hand them out, not much to us, but they always say Thankyou, and we wanted for nothing, I must admit I get something out of tipping as well, it makes me feel Good. Enjoy the Valentin, and don't let the few rude sorts rob you of your well earned vacation, enjoy, we did.

Room Tip: Bring your own Float, Tip what you can afford, explore the grounds, and above all have enjoy yoursel...

We recently returned from a week long trip to the VIM (2/14-2/20). It was our first trip to the Maya Riviera and we couldn't have been more satisfied. The hotel was beautifully run, staff genuinely pleased to serve, grounds are lovely with all sorts of wonderful bird and animal life to enjoy. Ridiculous and quite good variety of food availlable at all hours. Beach was lovely. We also had a good experience with the official hotel tour company (Best Day), which arranged tours to Chichen Itza and Tulum/Akumal. We especially enjoyed our snorkeling trip to Akumal, where we got to see 2 sea turtles. I enjoyed the spa and yoga/fitness classes, husband enjoyed beach volleyball. All in all a wonderful trip and hope to go again in the future.

Room Tip: Building 3 was quiet and close to all the restaurants and lobby

We just returned from our eight night honeymoon at VIM (2/22 - 3/2). This was the first all-inclusive resort for both of us, and we enjoyed our stay and the resort. We purchased a deal through an online sale site, and I was worried that our service might have been impacted because of it. Not at ALL. Every person we interacted with on staff was super friendly, helpful and seemed genuinely happy to be there. Some favorites that stood out were Ivan at the beach restaurant, and Jorge the bellman.

Check-in was a breeze...we were given both the cool towel and chilled sparkling wine. I had emailed the resort in November requesting a King bed, and then called a couple of days before to make sure of it. They did not have one in the room type I had upgraded to, so we had to stay in a room with two beds the first night. Not ideal, but not a big deal either. The "honeymoon" banner on our door, chilled sparkling wine, fruit basket, and rose petals acknowledging our honeymoon were nice touches and appreciated. Our first room did smell a little musty, but not horribly so. The room we switched to in Building 6 (golden swim-up suite) was awesome. The building itself was centrally located to the beach, restaurants and lobby. The room was large, very clean and in a quiet setting. You could walk out your door and have access to two lounge chairs and a quiet pool. We appreciated this option since it was so hot and humid (87 avg each day we were there) and it was nice to jump in and cool off whenever we felt like it. Yes, I could hear the people above me a bit, but what can you expect? They are walking around and enjoying their vacation too!

The beach was beautiful and not rocky...all the reviews that say it was too rocky to swim...I don't understand them at all. The only thing that could possibly prevent swimming was the rough surf, but the water was warm, teal and beautiful. There are also these cool fish that you can feed...grab a slice of fresh bread from the breakfast buffet. They will eat it right from your hand! It was pretty breezy while we were there, but it was a nice warm breeze that prevented you from cooking in the sun. You definitely need to reserve a palapa early if you wanted shade (thanks Levi!), I'd say by 7:30am or so. It was well worth getting up early to reserve one. Same at the main pool...lots of great people watching, games and two swim up bars.

The food quality was what we were most concerned with before we went, but everything ended up being pretty good. Breakfast and lunch buffets had a ton of variety and something for everyone. We thought the beach restaurant had better breakfast and Le Marche was better for lunch. There was plenty of fresh fruit and "American" favorites at every meal. The omelet station was great, fish dishes and daily roasted meats delicious and overall we were pleasantly surprised. Each day is a different theme for lunch - Asian, American, Mexican, etc. Try the coconut ice cream at Le Marche at lunch - to die for! We tried all of the restaurants except the French restaurant and they were decent. We went to the Italian (great beef carpaccio and arugula salad) and Japanese restaurants twice (hibachi shrimp was great, as was the steak). We are foodies, but not food snobs, and were happy with our meals. Room service was prompt, plentiful and good. Try the American breakfast and chicken fajita!

Excursions and stuff to do - we booked a snorkeling trip through the resort for $80USD for both of us...about an hour of snorkeling in nearby Puerto Morales and thought that was fun. We also took a cab for $40USD round trip to Playa and did some shopping on 5th. Be prepared to haggle and we thought stuff was pretty expensive...for some reason we thought we'd get better deals in Mexico...not so.

Overall, we would return to VIM again. We met a few really cool couples who we will most likely stay in touch with and had a blast. It was our first time to this area in Mexico, and we didn't really feel the need to go off property. We were content to lay around, soak up the sun, eat a lot and have yummy drinks when we felt like it. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Bring lots of $1 bills for tipping, sunscreen and an insulated drink cup. Building 6 was centrally l...

We went to the VIM Jan. 24-31. First let me say that me and my wife are ham and eggers. We like to have fun and don't let anything bother us while on vacation. Im going to try and keep it brief because if you read most of the reviews there all pretty much the same besides the complainers.
The food here is really good. As long as you stick with the fresh stuff. The buffet stands at lunch are not the best. most of the food is cold and over cooked, but the fresh fish and pasta cooked to order is awesome. Fresh crepes at breakfast were awesome too. The dinner menus are big enough so u should be able to find something you like unless you are really picky. I loved the pad Thai at the indonesian restaurant. We ate at all the restaurants and all were good. The steak house was the worst in my book, but still good. The steak isn't the greatest but your in mexico right. Thats to be expected. We have been to the Iberostar Tucan resort 3 times before coming here and we thought that place was great until we came here. The food here blows away Iberostars food. So like i said stick to the fresh cooked food and you should love it. The beach is nice but it is hard to get one of those huts for shade. Also be careful in the ocean because there are riptides pretty often once you get out past your waist. I don't know if it was because of how bad the weather was that week or if thats normal there. So if your not a strong swimmer be careful. Also bring some bread with you to the beach and through it in the shallows and a ton of fish will swarm you. Its pretty cool. You can even feed them by hand. Really can't comment on the pool. We are beach people. The only problems i had with the hotel was the entertainment and location. The entertainment was not bad it was just that every time the party got going it switched to another location and was of a different form. Its on a tight schedule seems 1-2 hours long and then you have to go find something else. We still had a blast though. Hope you like techno, thats always the last thing going even though its supposed to be a DJ. They don't take requests, they pretty much play what they want. At least for us they didnt. The location is fine if you don't want to leave the hotel. If you do its very spendy. To go into playa is $40 one way with a taxi. If you do an excursion though they come and pick you up so that's not bad. So as long as you don't want to roam around the cities the location won't bother you. The grounds are pretty big, but should't be a problem for anyone unless you have trouble walking. Plus there are carts always going by that you can catch a ride on. One thing we found out thats not mentioned in the reviews that i read is that there are 3 different maids that work your room at different times. 1st maid in the morning pretty much cleans up everything so tip her the most. 2nd just restocks the fridge in the afternoon. 3rd is turn down service. All did a great job for us. We stayed in a regular room in building 4 and loved it and the location. Its pretty central. If you like to nit pick you can find small things to complaine about, like not getting a 3rd floor room like we requested (you really can hear everything going on above you) but like i said we don't let little stuff ruin our vacations. Over all we really liked this place and would come back for sure. Think this place would be great for a big group of friends. Everyone we talked to while down there also loved it.
P.S. watch out for channel 48 on the T.V. lol.

Room Tip: 3rd floor so you don't hear the people above you. Regular rooms were awesome and big and central...

Went to VIM Feb 24-Mar 1.This place was unbelievable! My wife and I were looking for a place to celebrate our 5th anniversary, as well as the honeymoon we never took. We found out that our good friends were also looking to go somewhere, so we decided to go together. Came across VIM in online search with Funjet, carefully studied the reviews, and decided to go for it. Wow! We were absolutely blown away with the architecture, landscaping, groundskeeping, and rooms. We've all been places where the photos look nothing like the real thing -- but this was NOT one of those. It is even more impressive in person. And even with all of that, the best part of staying there was the staff. They were so friendly and willing to help -- smiling and cheerful. We ordered from their 24 hr room service late at night a couple times (which by the way is wonderful -- knowing that you can get a good warm meal 24/7), and the service was prompt, polite, and very friendly. I had seen mixed reviews about the food, but overall I would call it very good. The two ladies in our group are fairly picky eaters, and they were always able to find something on the buffet (or menu) that they liked. The beach was beautiful with white sand and large swimming area. Wait staff came around every once in a while, or you could go about 50 yards to the beach bar. Most days were a little more breezy than we liked, but it didn't keep us from lounging out there. A short walk, and you were back at the pool where it was more calm. The huge pool was very nice, with two swim up bars and any drink you could imagine. We spent a lot of time there, and met four other couples that we hung out with a lot. Now....many on here have said it, but the big complaint really is the system (or lack thereof) of reserving chaise lounge chairs and the pool floaties. I felt like it was a bunch of kindergarten kids......getting down the the pool at 6:00 a.m. to leave nothing but a book to reserve their spot. And the frustrating part.....many of them didn't spend much time there. As for the floaties....people would basically claim them in the early morning, and never give them up the whole day even when not in use. I don't have the answer to recommend to VIM, but I would recommend this. They do need to figure out a way to police use of the chairs -- such as not allowing unattending reserving of chairs until later in the day (such as 10:00 am). If it wasn't for the pool/chair thing, we couldn't think of a single thing we were unhappy with. We cannot wait for the next chance to go back to VIM -- we got so attached to the place and the people that we were a little sad to leave. Have no reservations about going here.....book it now!!!!
