“A Wonderful Week”
Reviewed November 11, 2011

My partner and I just returned from a fantastic week at the Valentin Imperial Maya. This was a second time at this resort, and we loved it just as much this time around as we did the first time. Since it was his birthday we did splurge a little on the Golden Jr Suite. We were on the 3rd floor and could see the ocean from our balcony that also overlooked the pool. Very nice indeed.

One comment I will make is that, to my knowledge, all of the rooms have an in-room safe in them and we made sure all of our valuables were always in the safe... I would recommend this no matter WHAT hotel you stayed at, and find it foolish not to take advantage of this safety measure.

Now onto the food: I am not a food snob, but I would give the food 4 out of 5 stars. Some things need improvement but overall we was liked most everything we ate. We loved the French restraunt!

Service: Erika at the pool and Mariam at the buffet are AWESOME!! They always had a smile on their face and kept our drinks full. Mariam thought it was funny to offer us tequila shots at breakfast as we nursed our hangovers and by day 2 she already knew what we wanted to drink.... other than tequila.

We had several friends join us on this trip, and they all seemed equally impressed as far as we know. The location, the staff, and the overall experience was well worth the money!

Last but certainly not least, I want to commend the hotel on their friendliness toward the gay community. The ONLY person that we ever felt uncomfortable around was a jerk at a table next to us as we enjoyed a few drinks in the Plaza. We were not being loud AT ALL and were talking amoungst ourselves, but he managed to show his ignorance and was making rude comments... LOUDLY. Other guest noticed this and even "apologized" to us for his behaviour when he left. From the staff to the guests (except for 1) we always felt welcome and were treated with the utmost respect. Thank You All

This was the best hotel we have ever stayed at. The beautiful beach was only rivaled by the huge pool with swim up bar. 5.0pm would see us floating around with our 'mudslide' cocktails resting on the provided float pads. The evening entertainment was good, the staff helpful. Nothing was ever too much trouble. When a travel company went bankrupt while we were there they did everything they could to help those staying at the resort who had been affected. Other hotels kept these poor people locked in with police guarding them until they paid in full again. Definately the best hotel on the Riviera Maya. We had a huge room with jacuzzi tub. This is an adult only hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms around the pool seemed to be the favourite. Some walking distance to facilities is neccessary...

Celebrated 25th from Nov 3- 10th, 2011 and a great time at Valentin. We were looking for a beautiful beach, nice pool, adult all-inlusive and after comparing prices and reading reviews we selected VIM. Direct flights were important as we didn't want to waste an entire day flying and we took JetBlue non-stop from Boston....great airlline, oversized seats, free movies and tv for each seat...fun staff....3hrs 15 minutes coming back.....3hrs 40 minutes going there....on beach by noon....

VIM is approx 1/2 hour from airport....we had been provided transportation to and from by Olympus Tours....very professional and organized....3 couples in a 10 passenger van...very comfortable, new vehicle. We were the first couple dropped off as the other two were traveling futher south. As the van door was opened by a VIM employee, we were met with 2 glasses of champagne and cool towels....The expression on the faces of the other travelers were priceless....

We arrived on a Thursday - during Nov, which is slow season - so all travel and check-in went quickly and smoothly...We have traveled to this area previoulsy and were impressed at the amount of English spoken by staff. We arrived at resort at 11:00AM and our room was ready...We stayed in the Silver Sands section, building 2, which is the closest building to the main pool. We felt it was a great location at is central to everything. The room is not the most expensive but was nicer than we expected. There is a couch in front of the bed which provides a sitting area for viewing tv. All rooms have a balcony with 2 chairs and table....This was great early mornings and evenings. We were looking directly at the mangrove...jungle like area, with deep green trees....This was fine with us as we felt it offered privacy, quiet and some very colorful bird watching. I would recommend requesting rooms 2301, 02,03,04 if you stay in this building as you can see the ocean from the 3rd floor in these rooms. The bed is King size, very comfortable with plenty of pillows. Approx 4 feet from bed is a large jacuzzi tub....around outside of tub is a curtain and the tub seperates bed from bathroom. I have read some people complaining about this but I don't understand...YOU ARE WITH A SPECIAL PERSON....anyway....the other side of the tub is the bathroom with 2 sinks and sufficient space for two people to get ready....The camode and shower are on the far wall and both have glass frosted doors.....The room was very comfortable for us and we would not upgrade....Actually viewed a Golden room, which was like 2 rooms but we preferred our location. We don't spend much time in room anyway so would not increase price for upgrade....

The pool is the largest in the area and it large and beautiful. Winds around the property like a large pond with quiet areas, built in jacuzzies, activity area, bridges that cross over from one side to another and most importantly, (2) swim up bars.....which were a great meeting place for and new and hopefully permanent friends. I was told the pool is actually 300 YARDS long....Some people have complained about some missing tiles in the pool....This is just ridiculous to me....must have been some missing.....but I wasn't looking or counting...and could have cared less....They actually have a 2nd pool which is about a double size regular pool....This pool is seperated from first with foliage and provided a very intimate setting...albeit, two quiet for us...however, one couple used it all week and most have thought they were royalty....Only problem for us...NO SWIM UP BAR.....

The beach is beautiful....and they're we plenty of seats and palapas during this time of year...They are trying to enforce a no towel game rule, but we did find people going out early and saving areas. They're is a small outside bar right near the access to the beach...and that was the hardest place to find a palapa. The beach is very large and offered perfect conditions for body surfing and boogie boarding all week. The best swimming area was left of the main access point, directly in front of volleyball net. Just be careful...as my wife and I shared a boogie board to lie across and float around....very romantic....until we tried to get back in and had to have lifeguard perform a BAYWATCH rescue....thanks Miguel....We received instant noteriety from the sun worshippers on the beach the rest of the week....It is really a nice, sandy, picturesque beach.....waves got very big during the week....I walked the beach every day...and this was the best maintained beach in this area....

You can be as active or as passive as you would like....Staff provides plenty of organized games, land, water, gym, dance....nice mix.......After reading reviews some people rave about the food, others complain. We did not plan a vacation centered around the food.....I think we have very fair expectation when we vacation......as this was our 4th all inclusive - and we have never complained about any of them....I can offer my review. Breakfast was great at either of the two buffets.....The one on the beach....is smaller but....freshly made omelots to order or eggs to order offered at both.....They had pastries, cold cuts, cheeses, mexican offerings, traditional American fares, fresh fruit and vegetables....and about 12 selection of juices and the makings for bloody marrys and mamossas every day.....

Really enjoyed the lunches....again larger buffet offered at Le Merche, which is the larger restaurant. We generally ate at the restaurant by the beach...which is a la carte except for a salad/soup bar. I would order Ahi Tuna, cooked to order and cut it up and place it over a very fresh salad I prepared at salad bar. They also had sashami daily as part of salad bar and fresh chips and salsa....The grilled sea bass was very tasty as were the mussels. My wife had a hamburger with the fixings one day included pineapple, which she enjoyed....and a he burritos were excellent.....We enjoyed the breakfast and lunches....but in truth, ate one or the other as it would fill us until dinner...

Dinner is all a la carte, with different theme restaurants....We live in the north east, which has some of the best food in the world...so, I would not claim the food compared to an Italian dinner at a spot in the north end of Boston....but we thought it was good.......Mexican restaurant was fun and food tasty....The Maya tacos, which were more like falitas were excellent...had to ask for some sour cream.....but we ate there twice and service and food was very good.....Italian.....Salmon was very tasty....as was a stuffed chicken dish....Pizza was not good as I believe they use a pre-made crust....thin....and did not appear to be homemade....Hey, don't order pizza....Japanse Hibachi was the best...we went with 3 couples everyone gave it thumbs up.....I don't normally eat steak out...like it better at home...wife tried it cuz we went to Lobster Pot and it was OK.....thin, like a flank steak...she cut it up and put it over her salad...but, not what I would recommend....The seafood at lobster pot was very good....lobster cost a few bucks but another couple had coupon....small tail.....very tender....but they should give you two tails....however, with salad, apps....desert....It was fine....They also have a French and Indonesian....restaurant...again...some people really liked it...others complained....I found all the food to be very palatable....some I loved...some I tried and was more than satsified....Oh ya....Don Miguel bar offered fresh sushi daily...I thought it very good....nice bar...piano which offered early evening drinks and some sushi....

The place also offers 24hr room service...quessideas and buffalo wings were very good....service was great....The one thing about the a la cart dinners that was very consistent was the service...The Mexican people really seem to go the extra mile. The servers all had fun with us and provided excellent service...very honest, hard working people....We always bring a couple of hundred dollars in ones and really enjoy tipping all the providers on the resort...entire staff seems to always have a smile on their face and Hola when they pass you....

There is a outside plaza in the middle of the main area which offered entertainment nightly...a bband for dancing, drinks and socializing.....We enjoyed this area after dinner....Again, we were there in Nov.....we like to have dinner around 7:30 - 8:00PM....they don't take reservations but will provide a beeper.....longest wait was 45 minutes....but......it's open bar....FYI....You can make a reservation at 6PM at Japanese for the Hibachi tables...they have several seatings.....so we were able to go at 6PM, leave room numbers for 7:45 seating....

The alcohol was all name brand...Grey Goose vodka, Beef Eaters / Tangueray Gin, Jack Daniels.....Not a beer drinker...but no Corona? Coors Light and the Mexican brand...which was fine with me.....We like white wine and they had 2 to offer.....didn't like the chardonay but the other one was more to our liking...lighter and dryer.....The bartenders all speak English very well and can make anything you can think of......they will also tell you which Tequillas to try and provided alot of entertainment for us.

The grounds are gorgeous......that tropical jungle feel....immaculate.....seems like they are always working around the resort. Wife and I walked the entire resort every day and that includes the road in and out of the resort and we could not do more than 4 miles.....finish up in the gym...The gym is small...actually too small for a place this large and something they should consider upgrading....but....again...November - census is low....I would say we were never above 60% so we never had a problem using the two treadmills or limited weights. Some reviewers have complained about how big the place is.....We didn't find that all....I am 50 and found that the walking from room to restaurants was no more than a 5 minute stroll with the one you love.....We took our kids to Grand Palladium down the road a few years ago...another beautuful resort....but about 3 -4 times the size....those mega resorts overwhelm you....this was more than manageable.....I thought it was a perfect layout...and if you are friggen outright lazy or unfortunately disabled...one touch dialing will bring you a golf cart....

I have never been back to the same place twice for any vacation..but if you compare apples to apples...I would consider returning it the deal was right....We were looking at Excellence, which I have heard nothing but great reviews and Secrets....but....they were $1000.00 - 1,500 more for the same trip....In my opinion this was a great value....Went through Liberty Travel after searching for 2 months and got the best price...plus a local office to talk to.....Contact me if you have any questions.......

Oh ya, they provide free high Speed Internet in rooms but you need to bring an Ethernet cable...and...uh....they provide a few adult channels....free...which may surprise you....channels 46, 47.....and......well....uh.....48....for alternate lifestyles......

I agree with some of the complaints of lot of walking, no daily menu changes or the lack of night life. So I will just sum up each category.

Cleanliness - staff works super hard keeping the public bathrooms spotless. Rooms are cleaned daily.

Rooms- silver suite building 5. Comfy bed, nice bathroom, close to beach/pool, and terra mar restaurant.

Food/drinks- very good food, especially ala carte and room service.

Beach-YES they have drink runners on the beach. No food, however anywhere on the sand. Plenty of lounges and palapas all day long.

Entertainment- house band plays in the plaza every night, guitarist is cross between Carlos Santana and Eddie Van Halen. Didn't do the cheesy shows, was in bed before midnight most of the week. The sports bar and lobby bars are a nice place to relax at night.

Having been to Jamaica 3 times prior to riviera maya, we were pleasantly surprised with Mexico. No harassing weed peddlers, con artists, or seedy types walking the beaches and airport. We felt completely safe walking off the resort and Cancun International knows how to move people without undue delay.

Lastly, we were surprised to see the Valentin is a Green resort. Is it perfect? no. Is it new and high tech?no. Are the employees happy and make sure your vacation is enjoyable?....ABSOLUTLY ...just book it and go and enjoy.

Overall a great place to vacation. As you will find with any hotel there are some things that need a little more attention, but overall - excellent! We arrived on November 5th and left November 9th so a 4 night stay was just perfect. The grounds are meticulously maintained now they need to put some effort in the building upkeep. The rooms are starting to show wear and need some updating although they were very comfortable. We had an Emerald Suite that was supposed to be ocean view, but we only saw jungle. That was okay though! We had a hammock on the patio along with a table and 2 chairs. It was awesome. The spa is excellent. I had a couple treatments done there and both were wonderful. They have shows every night - I just wish they were longer than a half hour. I also wish the bars were consistant. You can get a really good drink at the Lobby bar and during the shows in the Plaza, but when you go to the beach or pool bars, the drinks are terrible. Now, let's get to the food. I would highly recommend La Hacienda (authentic Mexican), La Alsace (French restaurant) and Ginger (Asian and sushi bar). The food in these restaurants was cooked to perfection even if the rack of lamb was a little small - it was still tasty. I would stay away from the Italian restaurant as there is nothing Italian about it other than the names they gave the food. The caesar salad was made up of radiccio, fresee, red leaf lettuce and a dressing that tasted more like Ranch than Ceasar. The lasagna has the the consistancy of dogfood between overdone tortillas instead of pasta. It was terrible. Don't splurge for the lobster at the Lobster pot - you get a Caribbean lobster tail that is about 5 inches long and they charge you an extra $20 for it. Not worth it. Le Marche which is the buffet that you get breakfast and lunch at is okay at best. You really need to go to the manned stations to get fresh food. If you take things off the buffet they are either lukewarm when they should be hot (or cold) and they are a little hard and crusty. They do make a great "green juice" and have soy milk for healthier options. Keep in mind that I am a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef so my standards are high. Overall a great experience though. Will I come back? Maybe, maybe not - unless I see "recently updated rooms" on the description. Would I recommend it if you have never been to an all inclusive resort before - sure. It is a beautiful setting and the people are amazing. We knew not to take along much in the way of currency as I saw so many people post about money being stolen. We did not have that problem, but a couple of the souveniers we packed in the suitcase never made it home. Can't tell if that was at the resort or at the airport, but it was trivial anyway. Hope this helps.

Disapointing second year stay in 2011. Overall the resort is clean and maintained well. Evening restaurants are above average. Breakfast buffets were great except for the wait to get made to order eggs. They need to havething both grill cooks cooking at prime times not when the line get long. Same thing happens at lunch at the burger grill. Lunch food was below average at best, stay away from the burgers and stick with the chicken. 900 + people at the resort and they are using frozen burgers??? The first year 2010 they had live music at breakfast and lunch not in 2011 cutting costs. Hard to get a beach chair. Have to get up way before 7am to run out to the beach and put some stuff on chairs to reserve a spot.(at the pool too) Not enough umbrellas to go around. Fantastic beach and ocean! Waves are the best. Beach and pool towels were ratty, need to be replaced, same with the beach and pool chairs. Great pool and bars. Evening entertainment is below par. They need to hire more professional acts... not local high school talant. Sad. After the second day they were overbooked and taking surveys of how guests were doing...told them I was disapointed in so many words and later that day I had a note in my room door offering a stay at a different resort up the street. We didn't take their offer because we didn't want to pack everything up, get aquainted with a new resort, and we didn't want to come back for to this resort for a free 3 night stay at our next visit. Time your check out right, lines can get long. There was no thank you at check out? For 2012 we are looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: Get a room near the main pool and beach building # 5 less $$ too.
