Grand Park Hotel
Reviewed November 3, 2012

Stayed at hotel for 2 nights. From here I planned my trips to Rangamati as a day trip and the other day was spent visiting Patenga Beach and Foy's lake.
What was most important for me was the location on a main road. Bus terminals are a walking distance away and motorised three wheelers are quiet a frequent site. There were shops, atm machines, banks, restaurants, shopping malls all within walking distance.

I booked B&B. The breakfast was the usual. You can have it served in your room or go down to their famous restaurant -The pavillion - to have it. In fact the locals know the restaurant and sometimes not the hotel!
Had a choice of Chapathi with some curry or continental comprising, eggs, Jam and Toast, Fruit Juice, Coffee/Tea. Staff were attentive, polite and nice. Spoke reasonably good English. Interested enough to know about you without been too intrusive. If you asked them about travel options and be specific what you want, they can give you good advice.

I arranged the Airport - transfer for 700 BDT using a hotel taxi. However, you can also do this with a motorised three-wheeler if it is not too early in the morning or late in the night. And can manage for about 300-400 BDT. Compared to that, felt the hotel taxi (which was in fact a Dolphin van) quite spacious and comfortable.

There was though one incident, where having asked the hotel to arrange for a taxi cab - to visit Patenga beach and back the taxi asked me for 2100 BDT. This was a ridiculous price, however, at the time the front office did not have a person to communicate well in English. I am wondering whether that was some misunderstanding. They could not tell me, what exactly the 2100 was for. Was it for a whole day? Was it to visit other places nearby or just for Patenga beach and back!? In the end I managed all that and more under 600 BDT using the motorised rickshaws. Even this was a little high priced as it was the day of Eid - and therefore taxis charged a little bit more.

Hotel rooms were rather big. As a single traveller, it felt too big. It had more than I needed as I was only using the hotel to sleep. Clean and fresh linen with a woolen blanket too! The bathroom was very clean and nice, however, the first run of water in the bath - had rusty water. A sign of the room not used for sometime...? Basic toiletries were provided. There was a mini-bar in the room. A TV with cable connection. Ample space to store away your belongings. A phone in the room.

There was internet in the room - however cannot comment on it as I was using my ipad with the grameen data sim - which worked fine.

We spent a night at the Grand Park on route back from the Hill Tracks area. The room was very big, very clean and fairly well equipped (fridge, TV, wifi, a/c). There was a huge window that we could watch the world go by from. The staff were friendly and helpful, even giving us some suggestions of places to visit.

The hotel is about 30-45 minutes from the airport (although we were there over Eid, so there was less traffic than usual). It is about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the Zia Memorial Museum and a small amusement park. There are a few places to eat nearby - we opted for Pizza Hut I'm ashamed to say - and the neighbouring Peninsula Hotel has a nice poolside bar serving beers at outrageous prices.

I agree with the previous review. Yes, the hotel is nice considering the location, huge space in the rooms, free internet and laundry services ... but the number of rooms are inadequate...so have to book well ahead to a room. Overall the hotel is good and the price is reasonable considering other hotels with same quality..

At first glance, this place looks a bit gloomy, with brown doors, curtains, furniture. But we stayed a week and were quite comfortable there. It is located on the very busy (and noisy) CDA Avenue. So there are shops, restaurants, ATM machines close on hand. Reception is on the 4th floor, reached by a lift. The hotel is next door to the Peninsular Hotel and is immediately above the excellent Pavillion Restaurant, which is where breakfast (good) is served. Beds OK. Large a/c rooms (see photos). Clean. Hot water on only one night in 6. Extremely friendly and helpful staff, particularly the doormen who provided much-needed help with the auto-rickshaw drivers. We booked well in advance and, though the room rate was stated on the email booking confirmation, they charged more, reflecting their recent price increase. Free broadband internet. Free laundry service was very welcome.
