“Beautiful experience”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

This lovely restaurant on a quiet street in the quaint town of Calarca, Quindio is a real surprise. Chose a table outside on a typical warm night. The curved porch surrounds beautiful gardens. Service is impeccable. Food is fresh and well prepared. Price is high for the area but worth it for a special meal.

“Warm and charming”
Reviewed May 3, 2012

This is a place to visit. Great looking house, old Colombian style, with nice balconies and lovely front garden. The waiters are nice, knowledgeable, welcoming and with an impeccable presence. Nice hardwood floors inside the restaurant with natural lighting and plants. You can see the big and clean kitchen if you walk through the restaurant towards its back, where they have all kinds of herbs and other cooking vegetables planted used in their food.

Now, the food is delicious, big menu with a variety of styles and influences, a mix from local and international. I loved the see food, although meats were also very good. The presentation is very creative and it makes you want to take a picture of the plates.

The dining experience takes some time, and it is a relaxing and enjoyable moment. Very well recommended. Michelin listed.

“A remarkable finding and a superb restaurant !”
Reviewed December 13, 2011

Bakkho is located in Calarca, Quindio. Calarca is part of the "Eje Cafetero", Colombia's second tourist destination after Cartagena.
Bakkho was opened in a renovated traditional and beautiful home with gardens and balconies. The place is pristine and has a very inviting decoration.
The service is excellent, waiters are friendly and knowledgeable.
Bakkho keeps a high end standard up to par with great restaurants in the United States and Europe. Our group ordered exotic appetizers, grouper, red snapper and steak main courses.
The plates are creations from the chef, Luz Adriana Martinez, she incorporates traditional elements from Colombian cuisine with international influences.
The attention to presentation, texture and flavor is quite impressive.
The HD sound and international music contributes to a great atmosphere.
They also have a very good variety of South American wines and a lounge/cellar.
I strongly recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

“An amazing gourmet gem in small town Colombia”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

I am from Europe and have lived for the last several years in Houston, TX. As a result I have been exposed to some of the best chefs out there, and their cuisine.

I visited Calarca, the small town where Bakkho has set themselves up, to visit my in-laws who live there. They were the ones that recommended we try this place.

First let's start with the building. They have taken an old home (old as in Spanish colonization, old) and completely restored it. It is beautiful! You feel a little of what it must have been like when there was pride and money to spend on maintaining beautiful homes in this part of Colombia. A lot of the tables are outside, under a huge wraparound porch with a view to the small but well designed garden they have created with a nice fountain as a central feature. While there I recommend asking to see the wine cellar. They have a small private party room underground with a wine cellar carved directly into the rough stone walls, it is quite something to see.

Now on to the food. By American / European standards it is not expensive. There were 4 of us eating, 2 drinking beer, the others fresh juices and we had appetizers, main courses and one dessert. The total bill was a little under $100. This is a higher than normal price for food locally though, so it does tend to be a place that the locals only go to dressed up for special occasions. Having said that, we went at short notice and iI was in jeans and a shirt and was never made to feel even slightly uncomfortable.

The food was incredible. I ordered a chop in a chocolate sauce which was delicious. The sauce was very chocolate, which combined with the flavor of the meat wonderfully without masking it (it was an excellent cut in its own right). The sauce had a hint of sweetness to it but was not in any way a sweet sauce. It was served with a side of some of the most delicious potatoes and a wonderfully presented vegetable medley. The vegetables came molded together in a cup shape, but they fell apart wonderfully with the touch of a fork so you were not left with a mash of flavors.

For dessert we shared a tequila / margarita mousse. It had all the texture of the good homemade mousse that it was (there is just no way to get that texture from pre-made stuff). The flavor was like drinking a good margarita, it is as simple and refreshing as that. I could almost see ordering this as a side dish and palate cleanser between courses it was so good.

The thing that will stick with me most about Bakkho though, are the people. The restaurant is run a by a brother/sister team. One does the business side of things and the other runs the kitchen. They were both very friendly. They waited until our meal was over to allow us to enjoy our dinner then came and talked to us. You can tell from the way that they tell their story that they have a real passion for what they do, and I was quick to let them know that it shows.

One final note. In an area where Spanish is pretty much the only language, these guys speak Spanish, English and French fluently, so it is an excellent place to go if you are not a local (i.e. if you are reading this review in English!). They even have menus in all 3 languages available.

I would recommend this place. Even if you are staying in a neighboring town and it represents a drive to get there, I would really recommend you do. In an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is nice to find a gem of such high caliber cuisine.
