One of the best locations in the Middle East with the Six-Senses touch. Truly a must if you are staying in the area. Ask for a room with waterfall view.

One small drawback: be prepared for some flies.

The Evason Ma’in Hotel is located in a spectacular valley with hot spring waterfalls around it and a Six Senses Spa in the grounds. It’s really a place you’d want to visit. The public areas are very nice, the service is very good, and the breakfast buffet is extensive, with good Middle Eastern and Western options.

But when you’re paying US$375 per night, I feel that you have the right to expect everything to be pretty much perfect at a hotel, and the Evason did fall down in a few areas. The room was very nice but there were some issues. I can forgive the hot water being off when we arrived as that was a technical problem that was fixed quickly, but there was a notice saying that in the heat, you needed to drink lots and that the water was complimentary, but there was no water in the room. Likewise, there was a mini-bar drinks price-list but the mini-bar was empty, and there was a kettle, but the drawer for tea and coffee held only 2 sachets of Nescafe and a couple of sugar sachets. Depressing looking – it would have looked better completely empty!

The Evason Ma’in and the hot springs definitely deserve a visit when in Jordan – I’m just not sure it’s worth spending a night there…

Beautiful hotel, in an intriguing location. My room was very big, on the 7th floor with a nice view over the valley. The bathroom was nice, with both a spacious shower and a tub. All the food in the restaurant was really good.

The hotel is not very easy to reach though (I came by taxi from Amman two nights and both times the drivers got lost), and everything at the hotel is extremely expensive (as other reviewers already have mentioned). Trying to arrange for a taxi to pick me up at the hotel also proved to be very difficult, as the hotel wanted me to use their car service which was offered ad a ridiculously high price. Luckily I had the number of a local taxi company and managed to contact them directly, which cost me only a fraction of what the hotel would have charged for the same service.

My husband and I along with 2 friends, stayed at the Ma’In Hot Springs hotel in Jordan last month. We have been impressed in the past by the Six Senses brand but were extremely disappointed with this experience

When we arrived at the hotel, it was exactly as we expected. The décor had the familiar Six Senses touches and the quality of the decoration and facilities were very high. Sadly however, the customer service was below the standard that we were expecting. I would like to explain at this point that we are not the sort of people that look for error. We wanted to have a wonderful holiday and did so as soon as we (in the words of one of our party) “stopped viewing the hotel as any sort of service provider at all”.

On our first morning, we asked the reception to give us details of the trips and activities with which it could provide us. We always expect to pay a premium for hotel services (standards usually being higher than more budget equivalents) but the first surprise was that we were quoted 800 JODs (1:1 exchange rate with UK pounds sterling) per person (and this in a very dismissive manner so that it wasn’t entirely clear what would be included or indeed whether this was per person, per couple or per vehicle) for a trip to Petra. This was compounded by finding out that a trip to Wadi Rum, 5 hours each way was going to cost 1000 JODs per person. As I say, these are only the details we could glean. While the offering may have been superior to this or indeed less wildly expensive, these were the figures and all of the information with which we were provided which was, frankly, quite surprising considering the amount of money involved.

We therefore understandably did internet research and came up with our own itinerary of what we would like to do for our 5 day stay. We presented to reception in order for them to help us put our own plan into action, including us hiring our own car from a nearby Thrifty desk, we were told that the hotel could not do that. Notably we were originally told before extensive further googling that there was no local taxi service and no local car hire facility. Both were obviously untruths. In fact, they alluded to the fact that they were not permitted to make any arrangements with third parties. This directorate seemed at odds with a five star experience. I would have thought that you would be happy to arrange alternatives on our behalf should your offerings be outside our price range or specifications.

We had two early starts and requested a few pastries to be placed out for us 30 minutes before breakfast officially began so that we could eat before setting off. Our room rate included breakfast. The staff on duty knew nothing of the request on both mornings, despite speaking to dining room management the night before and when we asked at reception, the person on duty at the time then tried to charge us 85 JODs for this service. When we questioned that, he inexplicably then printed another invoice for 140 JODs. We therefore asked him not to charge us for any breakfast and that we would leave hungry.

Another occasion where we were surprised at the attitude of trying to overcharge at every opportunity was when we asked to have our complimentary spa treatment, (which was part of our package). We booked our appointments and visited the lovely spa complex. When we explained why we were there, we were asked to wait in reception which of course, we had no issue with at all. However, when we asked whether we could actually wait by the hot springs pool, the person at the Spa reception said that we couldn’t unless we paid 40 JODs per person. We explained that we were hotel residents and that we had complimentary treatments in a few minutes, but he insisted that we could not go through to the pool without paying. This was a strange approach in our opinion as the alternative was to have us all sitting in the spa reception area which made it look like a waiting room when all we would have done had we been allowed to go through would be to take a short dip in a pool and perhaps use a sun lounger for 20 minutes. Surely since this is of no incremental cost to the hotel whatsoever, this is preferable than disputing what we quite reasonably assumed we were entitled to as treatments normally include access to the general spa facilities. Upon checkout we found we had been charged 5JDs for a ginger tea we had assumed was complimentary – another example of a very strange attitude towards guest treatment.

At no point did any of our group feel that they were the centre of the hotel staff’s mind when they dealt with us, but more, we were a nuisance. There were two occasions (once while ordering drinks for room service and another while the porter was loading our bags into our transfers when staff began muttering under their breaths in Arabic. I cannot say for certain the subject matter but since these two events occurred after we disputed something, it certainly appeared that the muttering related to us)

This is a lovely looking hotel, the spa is great, but the food is so expensive and the price of a couple of beers is frightening. A service charge of 10% is added to all your bills along with 26% government tax but the food is to expensive even before all this is added. The service charge is the worst thing because the service in the restaurant is really terrible, drinks take ages to come and often did not come at all, way to much hassle just to get a drink. This was not a language problem because the order would be repeated and room number asked. The staff are friendly but not well trained. When we are paying such a lot of money we expect better service than this, we were also quite substantially overcharged. Gutted when we had to pay so much money after our three night stay was so disappointing. We would not stay here again. The guy on reception could not have cared less.

Stayed only 1 night as part of a tour group. Thoroughly enjoyed it the place. Good atmosphere, clean and very friendly staff. The welcoming drink after a long journey was a special touch. Buffet meals was excellent and able to get what I like with cooked to order. Sitting in the verandah having breakfast with the waterfall in the background just won me over completely. Unfortunately was not able to enjoy the hot spa due to lack of time.

Room Tip: Go early for breakfast to get the verandah seats.
