We recently spent a night at this lovely hotel. The hospitality was great and the staff very friendly. Our room was cosy, with a comfy bed and a modern bathroom. Dinner was very fresh and tasty. There was a quiz night on and we had a super night in the bar, everyone made us feel so welcome. Hope to return to this beautiful area very soon.

My wife and I have just returned from a Superb 2 night winter break at this hotel.
From the moment we arrived the friendly staff ensured that we had a comfortable stay.
We were shown to a lovely room 'Castle Varrich' which not only overlooked the castle but also looked over the Kyle of Tongue to Ben Hope and to the left Ben Loyal.
The room was well appointed with high quality furnishings throughout though the bed was a little firm for our tastes. There was even a small decanter of sherry for pre dinner drinkies too!
The ensuite bathroom was quite spacious with shower over bath and copious hot water.
Good quality shower gel and shampoo was provided. Being 'off season' we enjoyed the included evening dinner in a smaller attractive room just off the bar which was cosy with a large log burner. Beautiful area for walking with a 12 mile route around the kyle on the doorstep.

Dear Martin8rice

We are really cheered to read how much you enjoyed your stay at The Tongue Hotel. Thank you for taking the time to write your review and for commenting upon the features that you enjoyed about your stay and in your room.

The view from the Castle Varrich room is very special and will have afforded you an excellent view of the path you followed around the Kyle! Its good to know you enjoyed your dinner by the stove after working up an appetite with the walk and the complimentary sherry!

We look forward to your return.

I travel a fair bit to the Durness/Tongue area with work, but usually stay over in Durness instead of Tongue. Anyhow, I decided to try the Tongue Hotel for a change and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was warm, cosy and had a good selection of malts. I never stayed for Dinner, and I left very early, so didn't sample breakfast either. As I was heading off early, the hotel offered to provide a packed lunch instead of breakfast. I expected the usual fare of a soggy ham sandwich and a bag of crisps, however, I got the works, Ciabatta roll with fresh salad, Millionaires shortbread, bottled water and strawberries, it was great and probably the best 'piece' I've ever been offered in a Highland Hotel. You can tell that the owners are trying really hard to impress and do go the extra mile, the small decanter of sherry in the room was also a nice touch. Will definitely return

Dear Richard D

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay with us. Despite our remote location we have a lot of corporate and business guests at the hotel; so it is welcoming on this occasion to see a review from a guest who came for work rather than leisure.

We are pleased that you found the hotel to be warm, cosy and welcoming although it was a pity that your work commitments got in the way of dining.

Where possible we will always offer an earlier breakfast to accommodate our guests needs but when that is either not possible or required then we do always ensure that our guests have a takeaway packed lunch to enjoy on the go instead. I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your piece and your strawberries!

We look forward to your return.
Warm regards

My wife and I have just returned from Scotland. We had a fabulous time up there and could not find any fault at all with this hotel. David and Lorraine were the most brilliant hosts who could not do any more for you. They bend over backwards to ensure that your stay is very comfortable and welcoming. We had our meals at the hotel which were absolutely delicious with a good variety of dishes on the menu. We intended to stay for two nights but needed up staying a further two nights as it was so warm and inviting. Cassie the bar lady is such a lovely girl and added to the friendliness of the place. We stayed in room 12 which had spectacular views over the Kyle and Castle Varrick. Just wish we could have stayed a lot longer. Well done to you all for making your guests feel really welcome. We will be recommending this to everyone that we know. Thanks to David Lorraine and the team.

Room Tip: Room 12 has got stunning views and is very spacious.

How lovely that you have taken the time to post a review about your recent stay with us. Your generous feedback and thoughtful words about the hotel and team are much appreciated.

It was a huge compliment having you extend your stay – not once but twice! It is delightful to hear that your dining experiences were so positive and that you enjoyed your room; I agree the view is definitely spectacular.

I know that you have fallen in love with this north coast, so I hope we will have the pleasure of your company again - soon!

We stayed for two nights in January as part of a tour around the north coast of Scotland. Tongue and Sutherland are breathtakingly beautiful, the weather was cold but dry so were able to enjoy some lovely bracing walks on the local beaches and up to Castle Varrich.
The Tongue Hotel unlike many on this coastline remains open all year round, and offers you everything you need for a cosy, romantic winter break.
We were greeted warmly by the owner who showed us around and explained everything fully, dinner, breakfast, bar, a good selection of malts, wifi, pool room and even where to find a book or board game to pass the evening away! It was a really nice touch and we instantly felt at home.
We had booked a superior room with a view - and it did not disappoint. The room was cosy and warm (a must in January!), beautifully and tastefully decorated with antique furniture to suit the historic property (it used to be hunting lodge). The bathroom was modern with a powerful shower and everywhere was scrupulously clean.
Dinner was served in the lounge bar by a lovely big stove. The menu read of simple honest dishes - all of which are clearly freshly prepared. Our meals throughout the stay were delicious, hearty and well presented, we both felt it was the nicest food we had during our two week holiday. The service was excellent, the waitress was friendly and helpful in telling us about where to visit during the day.
Overall we had a brilliant stay at the hotel and have happily recommended it already to our friends.

At the end of a great day, travelling through the Northern Highlands with the Porsche, we looked for a place to stay for the night. There are not so many hotels up there. So we were very lucky that our first chance was this hotel. The people were very friendly, we druk some great drams and the dinner and breakfast were excellent! Very surprising in the best way.
We surely return!

Dear Maarten K

Thank you so much for your review and kind words. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed all aspects of your stay and that you thought the food and service were excellent.

You are right, there are not many hotels open in the winter up here. All too often folk seem put off by the thoughts of the single track roads and the weather; not realising that the roads are actually clear and safe and that whatever the weather this north coast has something amazing to offer. There may not be much of it in winter – but the light remains exceptional and for the past two winters the snow has generally remained on the hills making everywhere look stunning without any hassle factor!!

I remember that you were travelling in your lovely Porsche – now if that’s not proof enough that you don’t need a tractor or a 4x4 to get around then I don’t know what is! Perhaps you will inspire some more visitors northward after your review!

Warm regards

We do hope you come and stay again when you reattempt your visit across the water!
