Their brochure claims 'Worth the journey'.

We stayed here for six nights towards the end of March 2013 and were cosseted by Lorraine and David (the owners) and all their staff. Nothing was too much trouble, even down to arranging special meals for us due to medical needs. We did not wish to go out for more than two or three hours each day and therefore spent a great deal of time in the hotel. We were never made to feel we were in the way and indeed coffee and tea were available at the nod of the head. Food was hot (including the plates) and all the meals were very enjoyable. Breakfast was brilliant and in particular the fruit at the buffet table was excellent.

The room was very comfortable, as was the bed. Our stay coincided with a very cold snap in the weather and we were warm the whole time.

As for the journey, is it worth it? The road from Lairg to Tongue has to be one of the most beautiful in the U.K. running alongside Ben and Loch Loyal. The Tongue Hotel offers comfort, good food and service and if that is what you are after, look no further.

Stayed at the Tongue Hotel for the weekend on the 22nd and 23rd March 2013 and had the best and most relaxing break in years. David and Lorraine were the perfect hosts and their staff were fantastic. NOTHING was too much bother and everyone went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. Can't praise it enough. We WILL be back.!!

My wife and I were on a driving tour of the coastline of Scotland and planned to stopover for a night due to its convenient position, roughly half way across the North coast. It's situated on the inside of a hairpin bend, but our sleep was not disturbed by any traffic.
It's a shame the outside of the hotel has not been spruced up, because it could put some people off. The interior is pleasant with evidence of reasonably new carpets, fresh wallpaper and paintwork in public areas, and certainly in our room (No5).
The landing outside it was cold but inside it was warm and cosy. The room was spacious with a large comfortable bed and adequate space for clothes
and cases. Towelling robes and slippers were also provided.
The bathroom looked new with a bath and a good-sized walk-in shower. A slight moan in that the only heating was a towel rail, so it did feel a a little cool. We found if we left the bathroom door open for awhile it felt much warmer.
It's a Victorian building so expect a few creaks. Double glazing would be a bonus, but are they allowed to do it? It would certainly finish the hotel off nicely.
Dinner is simple fayre, but what we had was very tasty. I had a very good steak with a refreshing salad. This included celery and grapes and a lovely dressing. Chips were probably of the frozen variety but OK. If I'd known how good the salad was, I'd have had more with less chips! My wife had simple fish and chips featuring a delicious haddock.
I see some reviews mention the dining areas. For dinner we were in a comfortable room, next to the small smart bar, heated by a coal-fired stove, making it feel quite homely.
Breakfast was in the main dining room. It had a decent selection of fruit cereals and juices. The good, hot, cooked breakfast was excellent.
The hosts are helpful, relaxed and friendly, making this a comfortable stop on our tour.

Room Tip: I'd recommend No5 as I know nothing of the others. The owners are sure to help with any needs if...

We stopped off for a drink and a light lunch after a long drive and had a lovely warm welcome from the owners here. We arrived just in time for last lunch orders and ate in a small bar area which was lovely and had lots of interesting antiques dotted around. We all wished we were staying nearer the hotel so we could have called again!

My partner and I only stopped one night in Tongue and picked the hotel as it has an interesting background (a converted hunting lodge). The owners have done a brilliant job in maintaining it and in places restoring it. There's still work to be done but you can see that the hotel is going in the right direction. The bedroom we stayed in was beautifully modernised and en-suite facilities matched any 5 star hotel I've ever stayed at in London. The bed, breakfast and dinner deal we got was really good value.

Breakfast and dinner were OK, but not outstanding but there are other places to eat in the village and surrounding area so that won't put me off revisiting the hotel.

The views and surroundings are wonderful. It is such a pleasure to be able to wander around the highlands and the Tongue hotel would be a perfect base for a few days on the northern coast. I'd recommend it to anyone travelling in the area and hope that we'll be back there later this year.

Room Tip: A room with a westerly view gives you the best view of the bay and hills across the valley.

We were absolutely delighted with our find! I travel a lot and like to find unexpected hidden places! This is one! I have been to Tongue before- for lunch at Ben Loyal -better this time but have no idea how this gets higher rating than the Tongue hotel. This is a class apart. So very beautifully decorated, wonderfully warm, and the welcome...This is one of the best hotels in the North of Scotland...but its unpretentious and friendly. The breakfast was amazing and the rooms equipped with everything. Electric blankets given November...were wonderful.
We will return.
Amazing value for money.
Thank you for making our trip so special.

Room Tip: We took an executive room as the little extra was worth it. Ask for a front facing room if its not m...
