“Lovely welcome”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

We stopped off for a drink and a light lunch after a long drive and had a lovely warm welcome from the owners here. We arrived just in time for last lunch orders and ate in a small bar area which was lovely and had lots of interesting antiques dotted around. We all wished we were staying nearer the hotel so we could have called again!

My partner and I only stopped one night in Tongue and picked the hotel as it has an interesting background (a converted hunting lodge). The owners have done a brilliant job in maintaining it and in places restoring it. There's still work to be done but you can see that the hotel is going in the right direction. The bedroom we stayed in was beautifully modernised and en-suite facilities matched any 5 star hotel I've ever stayed at in London. The bed, breakfast and dinner deal we got was really good value.

Breakfast and dinner were OK, but not outstanding but there are other places to eat in the village and surrounding area so that won't put me off revisiting the hotel.

The views and surroundings are wonderful. It is such a pleasure to be able to wander around the highlands and the Tongue hotel would be a perfect base for a few days on the northern coast. I'd recommend it to anyone travelling in the area and hope that we'll be back there later this year.

Room Tip: A room with a westerly view gives you the best view of the bay and hills across the valley.

We were absolutely delighted with our find! I travel a lot and like to find unexpected hidden places! This is one! I have been to Tongue before- for lunch at Ben Loyal -better this time but have no idea how this gets higher rating than the Tongue hotel. This is a class apart. So very beautifully decorated, wonderfully warm, and the welcome...This is one of the best hotels in the North of Scotland...but its unpretentious and friendly. The breakfast was amazing and the rooms equipped with everything. Electric blankets given November...were wonderful.
We will return.
Amazing value for money.
Thank you for making our trip so special.

Room Tip: We took an executive room as the little extra was worth it. Ask for a front facing room if its not m...

A fantastic base for exploring the Northwest Highlands, nice & peaceful, with the most surprisingly world class restaurant!
The view from our very roomy & comfy "Castle Varrich" room, over the Kyle (& the Castle) was superb.
We just loved this place, & hope to return one day....

Room Tip: Go the Castle Varrich room.

The Tongue Hotel has obviously been around for a long time - as confirmed by the interesting old photos in the dining room - but seems to have had a recent facelift. Our bedrooms and the dining room were all very tastefully decorated - recognisably Scottish but not at all kitsch. Staff were very welcoming and helpful and bar meals and breakfast were excellent. Views from our bedrooms were superb - we were very lucky to have perfect weather, but even on a rainy day this would be a good place to hang out. There's a very comfortable lounge with board games and masses of local information and other reading material, including detailed routes for many of the spectacular mountains in this area of Scotland.

I stayed in the tongue hotel on 23 sept 2012. The hotel was lovely, we stayed in room 8 which had a triple aspect and stunning views, it was furnished beautifully the way i would hope a scottish hotel would look. The views out to the bay and hill were breathtaking and worth the money alone to wake up to ( which we paid £90 B&B for 2 ). We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel, the staff were lovely and very helpful, nothing seemed too much trouble. Dinner was in the bar downstairs but this was cosy enough and they have now made a route down through the staff area of the building so you do not have to go outside, i always respect a place that is not frightened to allow you a view into staff areas which were all spotless. The meals were delicious and plentiful and all in all i have nothing negative to add about our experience. :)

Room Tip: I stayed in room 8, sutherland suite. It was very large with a tripple aspect, fab shower and very q...

Over many years, we have twice before been to the Tongue Hotel and looked forward to going again, but were disappointed this time.
We discovered: 1. The restaurant which we had previously enjoyed was not open for evening meals; the only choice for food then was the bar, which involved going outside, round the corner and down a hill to a separate entrance;
2. there is a smoking area outside the bar, with no cover, apart from a small "bus shelter" type, which was used by the hotel bar staff. We asked for an ashtray, but were told that they had all disappeared and advised to use the sand bucket "which everyone else does" (but not everyone did, because the ground was littered with cigarette butts).
3. the outside car parking area at the front of the hotel had been reduced by tables being put in the area and the main car parking area was around the corner, down the hill, outside the bar area previously referred to.
4. the outside hotel signs were appearing in need of refurbishment;
5. the hotel was not accepting credit or debit cards. We were advised that there was a bank in the village. So there was, but outside of its opening hours, there was no ATM available there.
6. the hotel boasts of being "Scottish small country hotel of the year 2011" and being a Scottish 4 star hotel. In view of its present limitations, I can not see those being repeated for 2012. 4 star, with it`s dining room not being open in the evening?
7. we were disturbed by an intrusive sound of electrical machinery from outside. On complaining, we were told that it was caused by the kitchen extractor fan and offered a change of room, but on being assured that it was switched off at 9.30 each evening, we stayed where we were.
On each of the three evenings we were in Tongue we chose to eat at the nearby Benloyal Hotel, which does accept credit cards. Obviously, we ate breakfast in the Tongue Hotel dining room and this was good.
I suspect other customers were and will be choosing to have their evening meals at the Benloyal Hotel and fear for the future of the Tongue Hotel unless it changes.
