“A lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

Tongue is a lovely place but a long drive to get to. I had a single room which was relatively small (not surprising) with a largish bathroom - no bath just a shower unit. The bed was relatively comfortable although a little creaky.

I ate in the bar and the food was excellent - definitely to be recommended. The breakfast was equally as good with the freshly cooked hot food one of the best breakfasts I've had for a long time.

It is indeed a long drive to get to Tongue but I'm sure you'll agree it is one worth making. I'm pleased to know you enjoyed your stay, particularly the breakfast, often a highlight of many of our guests.

Just back from three superb nights at this hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful and the food really was great. We enjoyed seafood every evening, the baked cod tails were a real highlight. Stayed in room 1 and the view from it was fantastic across to Castle Varrich and Ben Loyal. Facilities at the hotel were just what we were looking for, comfortable, welcoming and relaxed. It was good to have a popular bar as part of the hotel as this meant we could enjoy a social drink with other guests. Would definitely recommend this to others and we certainly plan to be back. Also a great feel to the wee town of Tongue itself.

Room Tip: Ensure you ask for a room with a view to Castle Varrich/Ben Loyal.

Had lunch in The Ben Loyal 2 weeks ago with my partner and 2 friends to celebrate a friends birthday. We had lovely day, the sun shone and so did our lunch. We had lovely starters then moved onto the main courses. Three of us had whole lobster each with choices of garlic butter or lemon butter or Thermidor and one had langoustines in garlic butter. It was delicious and memorable. Our waitress was friendly girl and very pleasant and provided us with finger bowls and extra napkins for the messy eaters!! Our table had a perfect view of Ben Loyal, Castle Varrich and the Kyle of Tongue. Gods country in every way!! Well done.

I stayed here for a couple of nights and was very impressed with this little hotel! Tongue is certainly an interesting stop in the Highlands and the Ben Loyal is worth a stay. The service and food were great.

The Ben Loyal is a really friendly and comfortable hotel. With great food, superb views and a location second to none then you will have all the ingredients of an enjoyable stay.
The staff are excellent and welcome you in a warm and genuine manner.

They certainly go the extra mile as was proved when we had a minor medical incident . The staff were excellent!

Were taken through to the lounge, which had lovely views, while we checked the menu. Great service. I had the Cullen skink, which was delicious, we had the Caithness burger and steak pie and both were lovely. Would definitely go back.

We came from the west, it was late and this was at least the 7th place we called in, so not much expectations to get an affordable bed for the night.
Surprisingly, they got rooms available, but the number he mentioned was not very exciting.
But then he offered us a discount if we stay in the main house, because of a Country music event in the pub downstairs. We did not mind as we like this sort of music, went down to the pub and had a good time.
Staff very friendly, room was clean, rather large, comfy bed and the breakfast was good as well.
Yes, It is an old building, so don't expect everything being perfect, but there is nothing really to complain about. Would certainly go there again.
