“How a small country hotel should be...”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

Stayed here for 4 nights in early April - a lovely, welcoming hotel. Arrived to find that the boiler had broken down (these things never happen at a good time!) but the friendly staff couldn't have been more helpful, making sure we were happy with our rooms, and happy to move us if we weren't warm enough. Rooms were well presented, comfortable and clean, and those facing out towards the Kyle have an enviable view. We ate in the bar each night and the food was excellent - there was a nice friendly atmosphere with a good mix of locals and tourists. Would definitely recommend - a lovely wee country hotel marked out by friendly, welcoming staff.

Thank you for your lovely review! Your comfort is a priority for us so we really appreciated your patience and understanding with the boiler complications, the unfortunate inevitable consequences of running such an old building! Hope to see you back again sometime.

My friend and I were travelling around the top of Scotland, we had arrived to previous day at Inverness, and had driven to see John O'Groats and were looking for a place to stay. We had called in several places along the way, which left a lot to be desired. But we were fasinated by the name of Tongue. So glad we did too, what a beautiful place, the hotel was clean and the room was lovely. The food great, with a good choice. The staff were excellent, and Fergus, well, I wanted to bring him home. He was friendly, in the evening and in the morning at breakfast. He booked us in and he booked us out. No matter when we saw him he had a smile and made us feel very welcome.
Well done all.

Room Tip: We went for the cheaper room with less view, as all we wanted was to sleep. All seemed excellent.

I had a two night stay in April 2013 whilst on a solo motorbike tour of highlands. I found the hotel to be excellent due to many things, friendly staff, great food, clean spacious room with a great view. Overall it was the staff who made it memorable due to their welcoming and engaging style. Plenty to see and do in the area, if you like touring the roads are amazing and the fishing looks great. I recommend the Ben Loyal highly.

Stayed here for one night whilst touring northern Scotland. Twin room had a double and a single bed and its own substantial bathroom rather than your typical ensuite, very nicely presented. Lovely food from the bar menu, bar also featured pool table and substantial malt whisky selection. Fabulous breakfast from the restaurant with stunning views of the local landscape. Staff were very relaxed and friendly, will definitely stay again when in the area.

We stopped by for lunch after a walk up to the castle in Tongue. The service was excellent and even though it was a pretty busy Friday lunchtime, Fergus the barman / waiter had everything under control and was running a very smooth front of house operation pretty much single-handedly. The food was mainly pub staples and perfectly good - the chips (fries) deserve a special mention as well as the well kept ales.

We stayed here overnight and wished we could have stayed longer. We ate in the bar twice and on both occasions had a lovely home cooked meal. There were a good selection of local beers and the log fire created a lovely welcome along with the local people in the bar who were welcoming and the staff brilliant.

Our room was warm, very comfortable and decorated to a lovely standard. Breakfast was also very good and the chef catered to our every request.

We would stay here again and would thoroughly reccomend this hotel if you want a warm welcome, excellent food and service.
