Kyle of Tongue Hostel & Holiday Park
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 15, 2013

We were booked in for one night but ended up staying two at this fantastically located SYHA. We had a double room with a bay window that had views up and down the Kyle of Tongue. The bathrooms were good (the unisex room is the best as it has shower, toilet, basin for yourself if you find it free). The kitchen was as good as any I have seen and the staff were very friendly.

We stayed at the Tongue SYHA hostel for one night (15th/16th July 2011) en route from Inverness to Kirkwall. My party consisted of two adults and two children.

The hostel is located right next to the causeway on the Kyle of Tongue. I found the hostel to be clean, tidy, spacious and modern. Our large room had 2 bunk beds and a double bed, with room for an additional mattress above the double bed if required. There was also a table, two chairs and a heater in the room. The kitchen, dining room and common room were very good. The person who booked us in was very friendly and comes from Northern Ireland (small world).

I particularly liked the view from the common room and dining room. This hostel is set in a stunning rural location. Even though it was July the hostel was not full. My only regret was that we only stayed for one night. I would welcome the opportunity to come here again to explore the countryside in this area.

The people running this hostel are clearly putting a lot of thought and care into it. The hostel has a dining room with lovely big windows, a nice comfy common room and a good, clean kitchen. I had a shared room with 6 bunks but only one other person in the room; this was mid-week but because of remote location I think the hostel tends to be quiet. All the facilities were clean and in good repair. If you don't fancy cooking you can get a meal at the hotel up the road. But leave room for the home baking on sale in the hostel. Fresh warm bread rolls, yum.

We got a large family room with a marvellous view onto the Kyle of Tongue - it even had a table and settees in the bay windows. The hostel is newly renovated and has a very good self-catering kitchen, nice lounge, large garden and friendly staff. The only drawback is that it is closed for some hours midday. Look out for the National Park Rangers' walking tours in summer - we got lots of information about plants and animals in the moors.
