“Property in transition”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

There were very few guests during our two nights. I had purchased a living social coupon for a garden suite, but chose to upgrade to room 1, which is a quaint suite.
You do feel that you are in Downton abbey... There are very few "servants", however. The personnel is nevertheless friendly.
The gardens are presently huge, with different interesting buildings. The property is going to be subdivided, and the manor will retain but a small part of its incredible grounds.
The lobby and main floor renos have been done with very good taste, blending very well modern and the 19th century style.
Room no 1, while quaint , offered towels which have seen better days.
The mattress was of very good quality. Too bad that o one of the few clients could be heard above us, as the floor creaked, and disturbed our sleep.Housekkeping is interesting; they did not bother putting back the decorative pillows on the forst night.

Room Tip: We stayed in room one. It offers a nice large bathroom with a cast iron tub also equipped with a sho...

Thank you so much for your review of the English Inn. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and that the mattress and room were to your liking. I am sorry to hear that the towels and housekeeping were not up to par. I will pass along your comments to the general manager to ensure that this is rectified. I hope we will have the pleasure of your visit again soon so that you will get the chance to see the gardens in full bloom and a chance to sample our recently re-launched pub menu.

The English Inn is in a beautiful setting and the building is priceless. On check-in we were greeted by charming staff. The inn's age and neglect started to show in our room. A little time and money would make a great deal of difference. Fix the window blinds so they work when you want privacy at night, touch up the paint, make it possible to actually make a cup of tea or coffee with the provided materials without having to move the fridge and unplug a lamp in order to plug in a kettle. Reading lamps by both sides of the bed with an alarm clock, would be a nice touch. The bed, on the other hand was one of the most comfortable hotel beds we've slept in. Spend the money and spruce her up - any older lady appreciates it.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the Georgian Room if you are tall, you will have difficulty with having a shower.

In the past, the Olde England Inn was our treasured getaway. We hadn't been to Victoria in a few years and today dropped in to see our favourite get away. What a change. Gone are the beautiful priceless antiques that many enjoyed in their rooms and graced everywhere in the Inn. The ambiance completely changed. The old English charm...gone, as well as the great staff. Folks, this is a perfect example of " if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The new manager of this hotel is working hard to bring this potentially elegant inn back to glory ... but she still has a way to go. The grounds are absolutely beautiful; lush English gardens with mature trees, fountains, and grassy areas perfect for weddings and gents in white playing croquet. The lobby, bar, and area previously housing an upscale restaurant shine with wood, stone, and fire. Our room, off a charming old narrow hallway, opened up with high wood beams, a huge old brick fireplace (with an electric insert) a four poster bed, comfy chairs. The room was beautiful, but worn and tired looking. Although peacefully quiet for our sleeping (yes, a hotel that has no noisy fans clattering, and no traffic noise!) the inn was just a little too quiet and needs new life and attention. There are no on-site amenities: no restaurant, spa, pool or other services. Even the continental breakfast was sparse. I would return for another stay, but not until this grande old dame is given the energy and life she deserves.

This was advertised as a 4 star hotel on Air Canada's website and I trusted that. The grounds are, in keeping with Victoria's beautiful setting, lovely. The builidng is touted as one with history and charm. It is old and in need of some cosmetic work in the rooms. I'll work backwards. The included continental style breakfast was served late but it was very good. There was no where to plug in the iron or lay out the table-top style ironing board. Room windows are old and look nice. But they are not sealed and it was windy the night we stayed. Windows rattled all night. I kept the light on. I've never done that before. The TV was in a separate room so couldn't be viewed from bed. The signage was hard to see when we arrived at 10:00 from the airport in a rent a car on a wet night following a full day of travelling. We parked in back, and followed clear signs pointing to the lobby and reception only to find the door to which we were pointed was locked. We walked around the rather large building to the front. In the lobby, music was playing that was very odd (it included screaming). I discovered that the well priced room I had booked had to be accessed from outside. I had no desire to go back outside at that time of night. I requested and received an upgrade. The new room hadn't been cleaned since last used. I was obligingly given another room. No elevator, so a lot of working the stairs with heavy and awkward luggage. Staff were obliging but not very pleasant.

I'm not sure what I was expecting given the low room rates for this hotel but I certainly got more than I might have hoped for. This property comprises a number of buildings together with grounds that mirror the concept of an English garden - somewhat overgrown - but that could use some attention.

I've read other reviews that put the place in a less desirable light but the room I had on the third floor of the main building was both quaint and modern. The stairs and hallways to the room were quite narrow but very well lit and very clean. The room itself was very interesting. There was a fireplace under a hood, period wall sconce lights and the window was a bit too high to look out of. There was, however, a modern flat screen TV and all the fixtures in the bathroom had been upgraded. The place was spotless.

This hotel is not within reasonable walking distance to anywhere so, as pointed out elsewhere, you need to drive or take a bus to get to it. However the price more than offsets any inconvenience that may cause.

The restaurant is not in business but a continental breakfast is offered in a beautifully wood panelled room. Something more than croissants and jam would be appreciated though.

This hotel has loads of charm and is well worth considering if you are tired of the same old hotel rooms you get with the chains.

Room Tip: The main building third floor room I had meant climbing stairs (no elevator) but was worth it for th...

This is a fascinating old building situated in a peaceful suburb of Victoria. It is, however, some distance from the city centre and so you need to drive or take a bus to get to the city centre attractions and restaurants. The rooms are spacious but in clear need of attention. For example, the shower head was hanging off the wall and indeed fell off under full pressure. The overall impression I got was that whoever owns/runs the building does not really understand the hospitality business and does not know what to do with the building. The restaurant was closed, the staffing levels apparently very low, and the breakfast the worst I have had anywhere - one croissant and a cup of coffee is simply not acceptable. A word of warning too for elderly or infirm visitors. There is no lift and the staircases are narrow.
