“Bring a broom with you”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We took advantage of a special deal with Travelzoo and finally got to take advantage of our reservation during a gloriously sunny weekend in September. The Inn is quite a building, a faux tudor construction dating back to the early 1900's with history and gardens to enjoy.

I understand from locals that this property has gone through some rough times recently and is now under newer ownership. I really want them to succeed as this place is very quirky and has loads of character. It was blindingly obvious though, that the hotel isn't utilising the restaurant for daily meals and that the hotel is running at a low occupancy with very few staff present. There also seems to be a level of repair and renovation going on around the property, which is positive I guess, although it did give the impression of a building being 'fixed'.

First of all, the good points. Our room was in the main building (and I now find that this is an 'upgrade' from the Garden Suites, although I knew nothing about this at the time and for which I was thankful given the size of the spider webs and spiders adorning the exteriors of the garden buildings). Our room was up in the attic and was an unusual but acceptable configuration. The bed was a double (not a queen size) but was firm and very comfortable; the room was spotless, a very nice flat screen TV and lots of towels. The water was very hot, and a very decent pressure (beware though, the temperature can fluctuate).

Now the issues - housekeeping. We arrived at about 1.00 pm to find our room wasn't ready. No problems, we came back at about 3.45 pm to discover housekeeping hadn't authorised room occupancy. Hmm, starting to sound like a shortage of staff here. We wandered around reception and the dining room (breakfast is served here) to find the room littered with debris from the (I am assuming) previous day's special event - a wedding? floral debris, styrofoam peanut packing materials scattered liberally and dead bugs on window ledges. OK, deep breath and ignore. We return the next morning for the continental breakfast to find the place still unkempt, dirty and untouched. An unfortunate visit to the washroom attached to the dining annex revealed overflowing waste baskets, discarded toilet rolls and muddy footprints everywhere. Around the corner, the tablecloths from the event had been stuffed not very tidily behind a curtain. I am no clean freak but 24 hours without a broom or a mop is a bit much. Given that the receptionist is spending her day telling guests to return at 4.00 pm for check-in, she might have cast an eye over the filthy state of the dining room and either picked up a broom or asked housekeeping to pop by and maybe empty bins and break out the sweeping brush.

Without laying it on too thick, you sense this place is trying to make ends meet with the minimum staffing possible; the breakfast person could have passed by for instance, and on replacing the coffee urn, maybe cleared the nearest table and given it a wipe down for the next guest? Or do housekeeping union rules dictate that this task must be assigned to cleaner-upper rather than a picker-upper?

This hotel is quirky, different and interesting. With attention to detail it could succeed, but right now it gives off an air of slight desperation. I imagine the butter pat on the landing table will still be there if we return this time next year.

I stayed at the English Inn on a travel zoo voucher that I bought as a nice treat. I live in Victoria and didn’t even know about this hotel so I thought I would take advantage of such a great deal. As we arrived I was overcome by the beautiful gardens and couldnt help but think that this would be a great place to get married (and was delighted to find out it is a wedding venue!) The rooms were quaint and spacious and the staff were completely helpful. We purchased a garden suite voucher but travel zoo had sent us an email upgrading us to an estate suite. We were on the top floor on the main building, and while the staircase was quite narrow, the room itself was not. We didn’t go into any of the other buildings so I can’t comment on what those rooms were like. The continental breakfast could use a bit more of a selection, but the food they did have was great! Croissants were fresh and hot! I would most definitely reccomend this hotel to our friends and I'll be coming back for my next staycation!

What a delight when you stumble across a hidden treasure like the English Inn. We found the place through a last minute Expedia search. The quaint room was large and was beautifully decorated. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom, while not ultra modern (which in all fairness is not the style of the reportedly historic manor house), was clean and more than satisfactory. The large grounds around the hotel were wonderful to walk through and a nice, long seawalk was only a block away. We found the staff friendly and helpful - and especially so when we asked for help on locating a scenic bike route. Also, appreciated the free on-site parking. I would highly recommend the place.

Room Tip: try to get a room overlooking the gardens to the east of the main manor house

My best friend booked 2 nights here for his pre-wedding night and his wedding night. He went 3 months early to check out the rooms. He was shown a moderately nice room with a big tub.( Important to him)
He was also shown a much bigger room with a canopy bed , and single tub. This room was considerably more money than the first. He decided to take the first room, and at reception, it appeared that the first room had been booked for the second night in the short time it took to look at the rooms. The receptionist offered him the bigger room for the second night at the same rate as the smaller room. Sure, he agreed.
He asked if they would spread rose petals on the bed for the wedding night. No, we don't do that.
Fast forward to check out, he looked at the bill and commented that he had been charged the higher price for the second night. He questioned this and was told he had signed for it, and showed him the signed paper. IT WASN'T HIS SIGNATURE!!! which he told them,...needless to say they covered their tracks quickly and dropped the price to what it should have been. So please check your bill for fake signatures and extra charges.
It is too bad this run down hotel is run by a mortgage/holding company. It is reflected in the grounds, rooms and no one on the desk at night.

My husband and I were in this hotel for the night, booked through Expedia The evening was so beautiful in Victoria that we didn't want to check in the hotel before 11 p.m., When we arrived in front of the loby, it was dark(no lights anywhere), everything was locked, somehow someone decided to come to the door and asked us what we wanted (we knocked at the door, i was phoning the hotel and could hear the ringing) and told us that as a late check in, we should use the phone which was broken and not in place?? Then she was walking with us with a flash light in her hand to "Carriage House" where we were supposed to have a room. The room or bathroom was in the process being painting; the smell was horrible and there were some spiders and bugs, i didn't want to stay there, The lady said that she is going to find another hotel for us because she doesn't have any rooms available in the "Manor"... Wasn't succesful, gave us a room in "Shakespeare house", full of spiders, Imagine what kind of sleep we had??

Room Tip: Please go somewhere else

Stayed here over the labour day long weekend. What a cool hotel and grounds. Our room was big, had character, and had a nice view. Delicious croissants at the continental breakfast. But my favourite part was the shower. Amazing water pressure. Reminded me of the good old days.

Room Tip: The main manor has great rooms.

We simply loved our stay at the English Inn. We came to take part in the a few of the Esquimalt Centennial events happening in the area as we group up in Esquimalt. It was so nice to be back and to re-visit the “ye-old” English Inn. We went on one of the Esquimalt walking tours which was just lovely and walked down to the sea wall which was only a few blocks away. Our room was nice, clean and spacious. Our room was a ground floor unit in one of the outer buildings; it was a bit far from the manor but the room itself was lovely. The only negative, if you can call it that, was that the Rosemeade Dinning Room was not open, this is a negative for us simply because we used to love the food that was served there. As a solution we simply walked into Esquimalt for food which was a nice walk as the streets are so pretty and it only took us about 15 minutes.
